The 10th Annual Rifle Gap Ice Fishing Tournament was a great success! There were 384 paid entries and 129 youth for a total of 513 total fishermen. This was the largest event in the history of the tournament. The contestants were greeted by a balmy -6 degrees at kickoff. Sunday was much warmer with temperatures hovering around freezing. Overall, fishing was great with large numbers of fish caught. The winners in the Perch Division had larger fish than in 2007. First place went to Dave Smucker with a 14 1/8” perch. In the Brown Trout Division the winner was Daniel Stephens with an 18 1/4" brown. The largest Rainbow was also much larger than last year with a 22 3/4” caught by Richard Manzaneras of Grand Junction. Richard drew for the $20,000 prize but was unsuccessful.
The winner of this year's Hidden Length contest was Sharon Endinger. The prize was a Quick Fish II ice shelter. The hidden length was 10”. New to the tournament was the Pike Contest. The person with the largest total length of all pike measured was the winner. There were only two pike entered and the winner was Jen Coombs with a 22 3/4" fish. The winner of the general raffle was Thomas Pike who won a Quick Fish III shelter. Overall, 2008 was the best tournament ever.
Thanks to all who participated and to our sponsors. Colorado Sportsmen Wildlife Fund uses the proceeds to buy equipment for our kids' Pathway to Fishing program.
