Virginia Update on Residential Sprinklers

By a nearly unanimous vote at the IRC Code Hearing held in Baltimore.....

Reliable Model G-3 Fire Sprinkler Problem

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has reviewed the U.L. testing reports of sample heads taken from buildings where the Reliable G-3 dry sprinkler heads have been installed, and where they are believed to have not activated in fires, as well as other locations. Of the 183 heads tested, 175 of them failed the test. Based on these results and in accordance with 901.6 and 901.10 of the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (SFPC) the SFMO has determined that these heads are not in compliance with the State’s Building and Fire Codes.

The 2009 Proposed regulations adopted by the Board of Housing for the USBC, SFPC, IBSR and the VADR have been published in the Virginia Register. The public comment period for these proposed regulations will close on January 25, 2010 (the date of the next public hearing on these regulations)

It’s not lightweight construction. It's what happens when lightweight construction meets fire.
Two recent studies detail the relationship between fire and engineered wood construction assemblies—notably, that they burn quicker and fail faster than their dimensional lumber counterparts. What do the findings mean for the fire service, builders, consumers, and NFPA codes?
