Book Scholarship Program


Book Scholarships are awarded annually to deserving college students. The scholarship is based on a 3.0 grade point average, need, and a commitment to literacy. Deserving students may apply by download application (Download Application)

2005-2006 Book Scholarship Winner

Sommer Wynn is a graduating senior at Howard University majoring in Sociology. One of the most meaningful pieces of literature that Wynn has read was Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. This story allowed Wynn to further her understanding of the process of socialization. The Bluest Eye couples poetic language and symbolism to capture the story of a young girl’s journey from confinement to emancipation.

Wynn will use her $1,000 scholarship award to defray the costs of Graduate school.




2003-2004 Book Scholarship Winners

Nancy Matlack- 2003-2004 Passage Institute Book Scholarship WinnerNancy Matlackis an honors senior at Rutgers University majoring in History and Africana Studies. The piece of literature that changed her world view is ZenZele: A Letter for My Daughter written by Nozipo Maraire. ZenZele is a series of letters written to a daughter by her mother as she begins her education at Harvard. Matlack describes ZenZele as being colored with life lessons such as the importance of family, heritage and remembering who you are.


Matlack hopes to use the $1,000.00 Scholarship award to travel to South Africa. Her grandfather was active in the struggle for democracy in South Africa. Through him, Matlack exclaims the history of South Africa is my history. Matlack will complete an extensive thesis project on South African politics and policy under the ANC during her visit to South Africa.



Alicia Parker - 2003-2004 Passage Institute Book Scholarship WinnerAlicia Parker is a sophomore at Fisk University majoring in English literature. Life Is So Good" written by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman is the most memorable piece of literature that she has read. "Life Is So Good" is an account of George Dawson's life in America, born two generations short of slavery. Dawson learns to read at the age of 98, illustrating that it does not matter how old a person is, as long as he has another day to live, he has new opportunities to accomplish dreams. This narrative has caused Parker to look at herself and her situations in a different perspective.


Parker will use her $1,000.00 scholarship to defray the cost of her tuition.




Application for The Passage Institute Book Scholarship is opened to African-American matriculating undergraduate students. Applications for 2006-2007 scholarship awards are available on line. Deadline for completed applications are October 15th 2007. (More info on scholarship)
