In the year 1911 Margit Subak Elsohn was born in Trebic, Czechoslovakia. Margit was educated at Charles University in Prague, and at King's College in London. Later she describes being married in May 1939; living in Prague when the German army invaded the city; her then husband joining the Czech army. Her marriage ended and she fled to Paris, France; reuniting with her sister, Gerda Grunberger, and her nephews; traveling with her sister and her family to Marseille after the French capitulation. She then crossed the French border in Cerbere by taking a path over the Pyrenees to Portbou, Spain; receiving American visas; and leaving Lisbon, Portugal for the United States in December 1940.
She enjoyed a remarkably long and storied life as a potter and teacher. She taught pottery at Greenwich House from 1965 to 1971 and at the Potter's Studio from 1969 to 1980. She exhibited extensively and her work is included in many private collections in the U.S. and abroad. Margit passed away July 18, 2007 in her home in New York City.
