Gilt Bronze Louis XVI Cartel Clock by André-Georges Guiot

Description:

A period Louis XVI Cartel clock in original fire gilded bronze; the large white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals and is signed, Guiot A'Paris ( André-Georges Guiot) who was an important 18th century French clock maker. The dial is surmounted with a draped classical urn, on each side of the dial are columns topped with goat’s heads, and draped lion’s skins; below the dial is a large lion’s head mask. The tapered clock case ends in a decorative pomegranate finial. The clock case design can be attributed to Robert Osmond.

André-Georges Guiot (also spelled Guyot) was one of the finest Parisian clockmakers of the Regency period and the early years of the reign of Louis XV. Little is known about his career; it is possible that he worked in Paris for only a short time before moving to the provinces.
