Gustave Joseph Marie Brisgand (Gustave Brisgand) was born on November 29, 1867 in the 17th district of Paris France. He was the humble son of a Paris cab driver, and at an early age began his studies in art. He was a student of Auguste Lying, Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Joseph Lefebvre, who himself was a student of Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres. Brisgand's earliest works are landscapes, but before long he discovered his talent for drawing and painting portraits and sensual pastels of beautiful women. This became his framed work. While in the United States he was hailed as "the master technician of the female body." Without question one of the masters of the female form. Some of his most famous commissions include Queen Elizabeth of England, The countess of Paris Isabelle of Orléans-Braganza, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, and Paul Durand-Ruel to name a few.

He exhibited at Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery (1918), Gallery Georges Petit,(1922) Salon des Artistes 1893-1936, and many other famous Paris Salons. In 1929 his works were published under the title La Plastique Feminine, Gustave Brisgand Illustrateur, by Alben Michel. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1934. He died on July 4 1944. With this he left a legacy of incredible portraits of beauty and passion that are as alive today as when they were painted more than a lifetime ago.
