Barbara Cocker was born in Massachusetts in 1923. Early in life she had been taught to paint by her mother, (Mary L. (Anderson) Cassidy) who was an accomplished artist in her own right. She attended Becker Junior College in Worcester, Mass. graduating in 1943. Barbara continued her education at Mount Saint Mary College in Hooksett, New Hampshire, followed by a year of studies at Clark University in Worcester in 1945. In 1950 she moved to Rumson, New Jersey. In the mid-1960's, Barbara took formal courses in artistic painting which lead to her to the New York School of Interior Design in 1965. Acrylics on canvas became her preferred medium. Living in Rumson New Jersey the beach in Sea Bright became regular inspiration for her developing style. Beaches in Monmouth County New Jersey her calling card and her most popular subject matter. In her lifetime travels around the world the sea became her canvas in such places as Greece, Barbados, Hawaii and Portugal.

She exhibited all over the east coast and later painted in her studio on Nantucket Island. Today she is famous for her tonalist renditions of the interplay between beaches and waves, clouds and skies. Her timeless appeal is as valid today as it was in the 1960's. Barbara Cocker's paintings are included in many private, corporate, and Library collections across the Untied States and abroad. Over 1500 canvas total in her distinguished career.
