Born in 1904 in Waterboro Maine, died 1980 in Biddeford, Maine.
R.L. Deering was one of America's foremost sea and landscape artists who captured the charm of New England's many moods. At the time of his death Deering was a resident of Ocean Ave. in Kennebunkport, Maine.
He attended the Portland Museum and School of Fine Arts, and also studied at the Anson Cross School of Painting in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, the Wayman Adams School in Elizabethtown, New York, the George Elmer Brown School in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and the Aldro Hibbard School in Rockport, Maine.

Deering's Art Memberships include the Salmagundi Club of New York(emeritus), the Rockport, Massachusetts Art Association, the American Artist's Professional League of New York, the North Shore Artist Association in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the Copely Society of Boston, the Artists Fellowship of New York, the Grand Central Art Gallery of New York City and the Artist's Fellowship Inc. of New York.
He served as President of the Portland Art Associates, and the Portland Society of Arts and Crafts, and in various positions with the American Professional League of New York. Deering was Director of The Roger Deering Art Gallery and School of Outdoor Painting, in Kennebunkport, from 1945-1975.
