Jacobus Jan Koeman was born November 16, 1889 in the small town of Edam in northern Holland.
He was a Dutch watercolorist, painter, draftsman, sculptor, ceramist, binding designer, etcher, lithographer and modeler. He studied Applied Arts at the prestigious Quellinus School. The Quellinus School, also known as the Kunstnijverheids School Quellinus, was a school for sculptors in Amsterdam named after the Quellinus family of sculptors, founded in 1877.

While in school he spent a great deal of time at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. There he studied the Old Master paintings and learned to paint in the same style and technique.
After 1934 he traveled outside of Amsterdam to paint in other Dutch cities including Edam, Volendam, Zaandam, Zaanstad, Blaricum, Bergen, and Loosdrecht. Later, he traveled to Paris and London. During his Zaan period in France he gave painting lessons to various artists including Nic de Carpentier, R.J. Ouwejan and G.N. Woudt.

He was best known to the public for his pictures in the Verkade Albums, which contained delightful images of animals, plants, and flowers. He also provided the bindings for these albums.
Other subjects included landscapes, winter scenes, cityscapes, still life, and figure representations, including nude figures and portraits.

His painting style is considered part of the Bergen School. The Bergen School (in Dutch called the Bergense School) was a movement in Dutch painting which manifested itself between 1915 and 1925. It is characterized by an expressionist style, influenced by cubism and showing a preference for darker colors.

He was a member of the Saint Lucas Artists Association in Amsterdam, the Laren-Blaricum Association of Visual Artists, and the Bergen Artists Center (KCB).
Jacobus Jan Koeman died in Bergen on September 11, 1978.
