Joseph Hastings Bennett (1889 - 1969) was a painter, etcher, and printmaker. He was born in San Diego, California on March 27, 1889. In his early years Bennett moved to Northern California where he spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay area.  He got his start in Etchings in 1932.In 1937 he turned his hands to oils.  He was a student of Emile Albert Gruppe  (1896-1978), Armin Carl Hansen (1886 - 1957), and Arthur Hill Gilbert. The influence of his teachers is evident in all his works.He mainly painted seascapes, landscapes, and cowboy genre or Plein Air scenes of Carmel by the Sea and the foothills near Monterey. 

He exhibited in many famous art shows and galleries including the San Francisco Museum of Art , the Los Angeles Museum, the Oakland Art Gallery, the Bohemian Club, Grand Central Galleries in New York City, Paul Elder Gallery (SF), Bay Region AA, Calif. PM Society, Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939-40, and Society of Western Artists, 1959 (1st prize).  He died in Orinda, CA on Sept. 11, 1969, fittingly with a Seascape on his easel.
