George Cuneo was born in Carlstadt, New Jersey. Though he is known for his urban landscapes, he was influenced by the French impressionist school and many of his early works during his time in France in the 1920's reflect that influence. During the 1930's and 1940's he spent a great deal of time in northeastern New Jersey and his paintings depict the Weehawken and Hoboken docks and neighborhoods where he spent a great deal of his time and where many members of his family resided. While there he served as the Assistant State Director of the Federal Arts Project (WPA) from 1936 to 1942. He moved to Maryland in 1946 and eventually became Associate Professor of Art at the University of Maryland in College Park where his work began to consist of rural landscapes representing the Maryland countryside.

Cuneo studied at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design (NYC), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the U. of Kentucky, University of Grenoble in France and Columbia University. During his lifetime he exhibited widely in New Jersey and Maryland.
