Samuel Theobald, Jr. ( 1872-1953)
He was born in Baltimore Maryland, in 1872, the son of a famous eye surgeon. He lived most of his adult life in Manhattan's Greenwich Village on Barrow Street. Early in his career he studied with Andre Jean Castaigne, the French painter and popular illustrator.
In winter Theobald would travel to Sarasota Florida, the Barnum & Bailey Circus headquarters, so he could paint backstage. A number of his subjects feature circus animals and performers. He also spent time on Fire Island, New York, where he painting seascapes and dock scenes. A portrait commission of Aubrey Clarke hangs in the collection of the Redwood Library, Newport, Rhode Island.
After the death of his wife, artist and sculptor, Elizabeth Sturtevant Theobald, he returned to Baltimore where he died in 1953.
