RARE NATHANIEL MILLS SILVER CARD CASE BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND
Description:

This is a rare and superb antique sterling silver card case crafted by the renowned Birmingham silversmith Nathaniel Mills. The case features stunning scrollwork, leaf and flower repousse and chased decoration surrounding on both sides. On the other side a monogrammed cartouche. The simle but refined design with flowers and scrolls are rendered in striking high relief, projecting from the flanking surface on the case. Detailed scrollwork defines the edges of the piece. Nathaniel Mills, a famed silversmith who worked in Birmingham, England between 1826 and 1857. He is most renowned for his sterling silver card cases, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes, and aide memoires.

This card case measures 3 1/2 in. in height, 2 3/8 in. in width, and is 2/8 in. in depth. It weighs 1.8 oz. The case is fully hallmarked for the silversmith Nathaniel Mills (NM), the year (? hard to read), the the monarch (Queen Victoria), the city (Birmingham), and the assay (lion rampant).
