Springs
 
The Pilates Method is unique in its use of springs.  Springs provide a type of resistance known as progressive resistance.  Rather than resistance remaining constant as it would when lifting weights, when using springs the resistance increases as the spring tension increases.  Springs can be adapted to simulate many other activities and are more functional in their effect.
