Unique Early 1980s Limited Production
Repurposed Recycled Jack Daniels Whiskey Barrel
Designer Furniture
American Applachian White Oak

The long rounded side cushions were called "Tootsie rolls".  Not all furniture had them.

Martin S. Brown was President of Jack Daniels Distillery (makers of Tennessee sour mash whiskey) in 1978.  Jack Daniels whiskey barrels were and are hand made from Appalachian white oak, known in the old days as stave oak because it was used for barrel staves.  White oak is naturally strong, resistant to liquids, rot and decay resistant.
Jack Daniels whiskey barrels are charred on the inside to give the whiskey its flavor and color and can be used only one time for aging the whiskey, resulting in a mountain of top quality, expensive white oak wood as a by-product of the whiskey making.
In 1978 Martin Brown asked his advertising department to find ways to salvage the used barrels, making him one of the earliest corporate recyclers.  The result was an idea to repurpose the wood by disassembling the barrels, removing the charred layer and using the 33 inch long staves to make high end top quality furniture, something which had never before been done.

Jobie G. Redmond of High Point, North Carolina whose family background is furniture making was hired to design a line of furniture using the bent barrel staves.  Eventually there were 52 pieces – sofas, chairs, tables, desks, consoles and a bookcase, all hand crafted and hand finished.  Jack Daniels Distillery (owned by Brown – Forman) formed a company called StavOak.  Redmond applied for patents (assigned to Jack Daniels Distillery) on the designs in 1978 which were granted in 1981.  The first pieces were displayed at the High Point North Carolina furniture market in spring of 1979 and went on sale in 1981.  Each piece has a small brass barrel embedded in one of the wood pieces.

Davis Cabinet Company of Nashville, Tennessee bought the rights to the designs in 1981-82, manufactured some pieces for a short time, and called their line of furniture Jack Daniels Old No. 7, after the famous whiskey.  Each of their pieces has that logo burned into a piece of wood on the furniture.  Their furniture is solid oak and uses Jack Daniels barrel staves for the curved wood.  Davis Cabinet Company pieces are limited production, hand made and hand finished, rare and highly collectible.

The pieces for sale in the ReStore all have the burned in logo and are about 30 years old.  The finish color is called Lynchburg Oak.  The lounge chair retailed in the 1980s for around $250 and the high back chair and ottoman  around $400.  Because the furniture has not been made for 30 years it will continue to appreciate in value. This example of our American heritage is an investment to be passed down in your family with pride for generations to come.
Thanks to a local donor who decided to support the Idaho Falls Habitat® mission to build decent, affordable housing, these three pieces are for sale in the ReStore®.  You have the opportunity to own this valuable, unique, top quality solid oak original American design furniture, hand made in Tennessee from American white oak by American craftsmen, and know that your purchase supports Habitat® home building in Idaho Falls.  Place it in your office, home, cabin or vacation home and enjoy the distinctive look and quality wood.  $500 for all three pieces.  Local delivery can be arranged.
