Here on Lake Gaston at the first of May bass are spawning. Look for fish in pockets and coves with some protection from the wind and rough water. Bass can spawn around any cover that’s in the water. This will include logs, brush, stumps, post, rocks and grass beds. At this time some of the lake has some color to the water and beds are hard to locate. The lower end of the lake has clearer water and beds can be spotted much easier Bed fishing can be fun but release these fish so they can finish this cycle. Good baits to pitch at beds are lizards, craws, worms and jigs. Colors of baits are not as important as being able to see where the bait is. This is a good time to use white, orange are chartreuse colors for your baits choices. They can be seen better and for a longer distance from the bed. Later in May to early June bass will go into a post spawn pattern. Male fish will be guarding new born bass and female bass will hold on drops and rest. Top water fishing can be at its best during this time . Berkley Power Walkers and Jerk Shad baits are at their best now. Also Power worms fished around cover in 5-15 feet of water can tigger strikes from lazy female bass. The top water bite can last all day in early May but after that its early and late day fishing only that’s best for this tactic. The crappie fishing has slowed some from April. These fish can be still caught but they have moved much deeper. Look for cover in 10-20 feet of water off of points and on bluff banks. Small jigs and minnows fished down to this depth will take fish. Berkley 2 inch Power grubs have worked great for me this year. I fish them on 1/32-1/16 oz. heads. Good colors for crappie are fire tiger, chartreuse, Christmas lights and pumpkin seed. Good Fishing Dennis Gilmer

This pattern will hold up to the spawn which should be sometime late April to the first of May. Baits pitched to bedding areas and fished in cover will work until bass finish spawning and start a summer pattern. Power Jerk Shads will work great during the post spawn. Also, a Mojo rig with a 4-inch Power worm will be a hot bait. Good colors for the worm are green pumpkin, blue fleck and pumpkin.
The crappie are just starting to move shallow now. When the water breaks 50 degrees, crappie get active in shallow water. Try minnows around docks, trees and brush piles. My hot bait for crappie is a 1/32 jig head with a 2 inch Power grub. Try colors like fire tiger, chartreuse and pumpkin. As the waters warm, a beetle spin slowly fished over cover can take fish. Fish slow in cold water and speed up as the water warms up. Fishing Lake Country Guide Service Dennis Gilmer
