May 13th we flew to Chicago from the Grand Junction airport for a week with Steve's family.
Flying over Grand Junction we got a great view of the Colorado River muddy from spring snow melt and of the Book Cliffs.
We flew over the Grand Mesa and could see the many lakes. Many were still covered with ice, including Island Lake where Steve went ice fishing last winter.

Colorado had many dust storms this spring carrying red dust over from Utah. We could see it clearly on the West Elks mountain range.
We got a ride from the Midway airport to Kankakee - to Sublette house.
We got busy - flower shopping & eating with family.
Sisters Helen & Cindy, & their husbands, Bill & Vern came over for chicken dinner. |
Saturday we went to the local museum and enjoyed the flower show and rhubarb festival!

Each morning Barb walked a couple miles from the house to the museum and the great walking paths in the woods there.
The museum had some great exhibits, including the home of Dr. Small - Illinois Governor from 1921 to 1929 (who was from Kankakee). Here is the school house where Steve and his sisters attended elementary school. The building was built in 1883.

Steve's dad, Don, told us stories from his boyhood about the Kankakee brewery. Steve thought Vitamin Beer sounded like a good idea - maybe if he drank that Barb wouldn't make him take vitamins.
That weekend was also the pizza party with all the brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandkids who were available.

We were glad to help out ... sewing, trimming, planting, gardening, cutting branches... while the supervisor gave us instructions!

Steve's white oak he planted 50 years ago! |
We enjoyed seeing some colorful birds...
We went to Cindy & Vern's home for another good meal & good visiting, and some delicious pie!
