Sean & Laurie's Engagement
December 23, 2004

After 6 1/2 years of dating, and both Sean and Laurie graduating last May from college with degrees in Engineering, they decided it might be time to take "the plunge"!

They went ring shopping this past fall and found a ring they both like. Without Laurie knowing, Sean ordered the ring to be made for her - platinum band with square-cut diamond - to be ready in time for a Christmas proposal.

So, with the ring ordered the next step was the "big talk" with Laurie's parents, Patty & Dwight Kline.

Sean found an evening Laurie wouldn't be home and made arrangements to meet with Patty and Dwight without Laurie knowing. He nervously headed to their home in Littleton and asked for her hand in marriage. To his big relief they said yes!

Now to "pop the question"!
He told Laurie he wanted to take her snow shoeing in to a lake near Frisco, Colorado to ice fish on Thursday 12/23/04. They got up that morning and checked the weather forecast. It was the coldest day of the year, with the forecasted high in Frisco -11*!
Brrrr!

Sean had to regroup - he was running out of time to propose before Christmas Eve. He suggested a different lake in Golden Gate State Park where they could drive the truck right to the lake. Laurie agreed. He seemed so intent on fishing!

Being the trooper she is, Laurie agreed and they headed off for a cold day of ice fishing. (Here they are on a much warmer day at Taylor Reservoir 2 years ago.)
To fight the cold they went back to Sean's truck periodically to warm up for awhile. One of those times, Sean said he forgot the hot apple cider back at their fishing holes. So he went back and while there tied a silver heart pendant on Laurie's hook and slipped her line back in the water!
When they went back to fish Sean told her she better check her line to see if she had any bait left. Laurie pulled up her hook and found the pendant. "What's this, Sean?"

Sean dropped onto one knee and told Laurie, "You've caught my heart! I love you. Will you marry me?"

She said yes!! Then he gave her the ring. Laurie was so surprised. She was not expecting a proposal while ice fishing! On their way home from fishing he took her out for a sushi dinner to celebrate.

Back at Laurie's house that evening, Patty and Dwight were relieved they could FINALLY say something about the engagement. They worked hard that week - with Sean staying at the home the week before Christmas - not to say anything in front of Laurie about their talk with Sean. The couple spent Christmas eve and morning with the Kline family letting Laurie's sisters and brother-in-law know the good news. Then later Christmas day they joined Sean's family at Grandma/Grandpa Hane's house in Evergreen.

Barb had been planning a quilt for their engagement. Laurie likes waterfalls so Barb wanted to recreate a photograph of a waterfall Sean and Laurie had visited on one of their spring break adventures. Barb finished the quilt top in time to have an engagement celebration on Christmas day with a champagne toast to the couple and welcoming Laurie into the Hane family.

Here is Sean's photo of Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon that inspired their quilt.

Now we all are looking forward to their wedding! Sean and Laurie tell us it might happen in July or August of 2005!

CONGRATULATIONS, Sean & Laurie!
We are so happy for you!

February 11th, Katie Dix and Jeff Wellen (maid of honor and best man) threw an engagement party for Sean and Laurie.

It was a fun night of sushi eating with old friends from high school and college, as well as with Laurie's parents, Patty and Dwight, and her sister's, Jayna and Susan, and Susan's husband, Travis.

It was announced the wedding will be August 6th in Ridgway, Colorado!
We can't wait!!!
