Access The Word Reading Program

Access the Word is a multi-sensory Orton Gillingham based program for teaching reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension.  The Orton Gillingham method was developed specifically to teach struggling and non-readers how to read, spell, and comprehend (read more about Orton Gillingham).

While the program will benefit all students, it is especially successful for students with dyslexia, phonological processing disorder, speech and language deficits, and other learning differences.  There is no need for extensive training or a teaching degree because each lesson plan is designed to be effective and easy to use. Your time and the child’s time is precious, so each lesson will walk you through the skill or concept and how to teach it.  I am confident that whether you will be teaching at home or school, you will find Access the Word reading program to be easy to implement and effective in bringing about lasting improvements in your child or student’s literacy abilities.

Access the Word follows a step by step progression based on a developmentally sound scope and sequence.  Click here to access the document that shows what your student will learn in Level 1:

Each lesson includes components recommended for solid literacy instruction based on research and recommendations by the National Reading Panel:

  • Letter/sound drill

  • Phonemic awareness activities

  • Reading at the word, sentence, and passage levels to build fluency and accuracy

  • Comprehension

  • Syllable division

  • Spelling and word study

  • Word and sentence writing

Access the Word is meant to be accessible for anyone!  You don’t need to purchase teacher manuals, workbooks, and special supplies.  You’ll give a basic assessment to determine what level and what skills your child/student needs.  Then you’ll be ready to start right away by working through the lessons that pinpoint those needs.  Your paid monthly subscription will give you everything necessary to start making a difference in your student’s life:

  • One easy to follow Orton Gillingham based lesson plan per week with a demonstration video that shows you what you’ll be teaching and how to teach each lesson component

  • A worksheet and/or concept page for the child/student

  • Activities to practice and extend the weekly lesson

  • Initial placement assessment as well as ongoing progress monitoring checks

  • A closed Facebook group offered only to lesson plan subscribers to provide ongoing support that you need to be successful:  share ideas and suggestions, ask questions, get resources and advice

  • Suggestions for helpful resources such as games, posters, apps, multi-sensory manipulatives, books, articles, etc.
