Spring, 1993
God began to reveal His vision for what became Aquidneck Island Christian Academy. A mother of a four year old boy was concerned that God was missing from most classrooms on the island. She sought counsel from her pastor, asking what it would take to start a school. The pastor recommended that she call his father, who had been the administrator of a Christian school for over twenty years. It was clear that establishing a school would be an enormous effort. She began to prayerfully seek the Lord’s will regarding this seemingly impossible task.
March, 1994
The first prayer meeting was held in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Pastors in the community and other individuals, who were concerned about education, were invited. There were over forty people in attendance that night.
April, 1994
The first public meeting to discuss the foundation of the school was held at the Grange hall in Middletown. The principal of the New England Christian Academy, Swansea, Massachusetts was invited to address the meeting. He challenged the group to form a steering committee and start a Kindergarten class for the 1994-95 school year.
May, 1994
A steering committee was formed. This included about a dozen evangelical Christians from area churches. They came together and took an active role in setting up a solid foundation for the school. Their goal was to establish a school with strong academics and with the Word of God at its center.
In the months that followed, the hand of God was obvious as the school licensing, the incorporation, the location and other details for the school year were completed.
September, 1994
Aquidneck Island Christian Academy opened with a kindergarten class of three students. The first day of school was held in the Kindergarten teacher’s home while the final inspections, etc. were completed at the First Presbyterian Church in Newport, the school’s home.
September, 1995
The school moved to freshly remodeled facilities in the Evangelical Friends Church in Middletown. The school grew to twenty-three students and added grades first through third in its second year. When grades forth through fifth were added in its third year, the school grew to thirty-eight students. Over the years, God has richly blessed AICA.
November, 2001
The Board of Aquidneck Island Christian Academy formally adopted the vision of adding High School grades. The passing of the motion to set this goal was seen as the next logical step in fulfilling the earlier adoption of the Classical Christian of education.
January, 2002
The Board established a ninth grade steering committee to begin an in depth exploration of what it will take to realize adding high school grades. The board believes that the most logical and prudent approach is to begin by looking at adding a 9th grade, with a view to adding grades 10 – 12 through organic growth in the 3 succeeding years after the addition of Grade 9.
April, 2003
The Board votes to add 9th Grade in September 2003.
August, 2004
AICA moves to its new location on East Main Road, offering grades K through 10.
