Alaska Vegetarian Society

The second Saturday of the month Alaska Vegetarian Society has a film night.

Our world is constantly changing and it is important that we stay aware of how these changes will effect us. The films will be on a wide range of topics including: health, nutrition, the environment, and sustainable and compassionate living. We will be showing films people would not typically find at BlockBuster or NetFlix. Our hope is that these films will be thought provoking, educational, inspiring and mind expanding--opening us up to new perspectives.

There will be discussion time after the film to help foster ideas of how these topics affect us and actions we can take personally, culturally and as a species.

The AVS Film Nights will be held in Wasilla or Palmer on alternating months from 7-9 p.m. The ending time will vary depending on the length of the film and the discussion afterwords.

For directions and a map to the film location click the "Map" button at left.

This Month's Film:
Carnism: The Psychology of Eating Meat
presented Melanie Joy, Ph.D.
About the film....
Carnism is the invisible belief system, or ideology, that conditions people to eat certain animals. Carnism is essentially the opposite of vegetarianism or veganism; “carn” means “flesh” or “of the flesh” and “ism” denotes a belief system. Most people view eating animals as a given, rather than a choice; in meat-eating cultures around the world people typically don’t think about why they find the flesh of some animals disgusting and the flesh of other animals appetizing, or why they eat any animals at all. But when eating animals isn’t a necessity for survival, as is the case in the majority of the world today, it is a choice—and choices always stem from beliefs.
This fascinating presentation helps us understand “why we love dogs, eat pigs, and wear cows,” which is the title of Melanie Joy’s book.  You’ll come away from this presentation with a new understanding of the social and psychological forces which invisibly shape our attitudes and beliefs about eating meat.

Coming up in June:
Winning the War on Cancer
Presented by Dr. Joel Fuhrman

We won’t win the war on cancer with pink ribbons, more early diagnosis, and new drugs.  We’ll win the war on cancer when we develop a very strong immune system by eating an optimal diet.
In this video, Dr. Fuhrman explains how to eat so that we can maximize our body’s defenses against viruses, bacteria, and yes. . . even cancer. We’ll learn how the Standard American Diet (SAD) actually promotes the growth of cancers, and why we need to use nutritional science to help us eat an optimal diet, to make up for all those years we ate the SAD.
Mark your calendars - you won’t want to miss this one!

This film will be shown at Dayspring Enrichment Center, in Wasilla. Mark your calendar for June 9!
