 Living in the mountains has many advantages, but weather, road conditions and other factors can greatly reduce the usefulness of our vehicles. Regardless of how well they’re maintained, we know that in time, our trusty cars and reliable trucks will need to be replaced. Fire and rescue apparatus are no different.   In order for us to better meet the needs of the community, we seek your support of a proposed two mill levy to help ensure our fleet of fire and rescue apparatus is ready to meet the needs of the community.

100% OF THE MONIES RAISED THROUGH THIS LEVY WILL BE EARMARKED FOR EXCLUSIVE USE BY YOUR FIRE DISTRICT!

Replace or Refurbish – the Million Dollar question…

With the average age of our fleet approaching 15 years, it is becoming critical for the District to investigate upgrading our fleet to ensure we are able to address your needs. With costs exceeding $450,000 for a new engine, competition for even used equipment drives prices up.  The requested mill levy increase is the only way your District can afford to replace our aging fleet of fire and rescue trucks.

Voting for the mill levy will benefit our residents and community in three ways:

1.     New apparatus can be rotated into service every 3 to 5 years, ensuring the latest technology is ready to serve the community;

2.     Additional cisterns will be strategically placed throughout the District and area subdivisions, making tens of thousands of gallons of water available to fight structure and wild land fires;

3.     Lower ISO ratings for property insurance underwriting (a reduction of 1 point could offset most your increase from the mill levy).

Peace of mind for about a dime a day…

None of us wants to pay more taxes, but the cost would be very low – less than $40/year or about $0.11 per day for most residents.  The following chart details the approximate increase:

FIREWISE INFORMATION
  • Give emergency vehicles the "right of way" at all times.

  • Pay attention to and obey announcements about area fire conditions.

  • Wood stove and fire place ashes can remain hot and cause fires up to one week. Place ashes in metal containers and ensure they are completely extinguished and cold before discarding.
  • Store firewood away from your home.

  • Mitigate your property:  Do not store combustible materials under decks or next to structures. Keep grasses, shrubs and other landscaping materials from growing next to your house. Thin trees around your home so they are 30 feet from the structure. Cut tree branches up to 15 feet above the ground to reduce the risk of "torching."

  • Remember you must obtain a "Burn Permit" from the Teller County Sheriff in order to burn any materials on your property.
    Call (719) 687-9652 for information about permits. You are required to follow all Burn Permit instructions.

  • Ensure address numbers for your home are clearly marked on your home and visible at the entrance to your driveway/property.

  • Keep debris at least 25 feet from your structure and keep driveways clear for emergency vehicle use.
