HISTORY:
It all started at the November 1966 SCCA National Championship Runoffs in Riverside California. Walt was on the pole for B/P with his Shelby GT350R, but Don Yenko had his Corvette also on the front row only .1 sec off Walt’s time. Walt was concerned that Don would tap him for as spin about turn 5, like Bob Johnson did to Walt at Daytona in 1965. So, Walt’s crew headed for a salvage yard and picked up some softer rear springs, which would reduce over steer. They did and Walt went on to win the National Championship.
So, when Walt & his son, Chip, got into the Shelby/Mustang vintage race restoration business in 1988, the soft springs were remembered. But, 22 years later, the tires were wider, so rubbing was a problem. It was decided to narrow the rear spring leafs from 2 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches. These have been constantly improved over the years for reliability, arch balance and minimum inner leaf friction reduction. The springs now also have to work on cars with a weight spread over 500 pounds and about 150 horsepower difference. So, two versions of the springs have been developed.

It was also necessary to develop a universal mounting kit that would allow using the original body mounting brackets without modification. The kit has narrow poly bushings with washers to fill out the mounting width. The washers can be moved inboard or outboard to locate the springs properly to the housing. New front mounting bolts are also included as the old ones are often ruined during removal. Bolting the springs directly in place of original springs provides 3/8 inch more tire clearance. A full 3/4 inch tire clearance can be had by use of our mounting offset adaptors. The rear shackle design allows adjusting the ride height 1/2 inch. Lowering blocks are also available.
