Dearly beloved of St. Peter's,
How exciting to minister to and with the people of this beloved church! And I was especially happy to begin on St. Francis Day with the joyful service of the blessing of the animals. It was a glorious day and the animals brought along a lot of their people, which was very nice of them.
As we walk together on this transitional journey, it might help to remember that we are always in transition, that we and the world are constantly changing, and although we may find the uncertainty sometimes unnerving, God is making a new thing! How exciting to be part of that -- to be always looking around the corner to see what God will do next!
This is a time of challenge and newness and looking inward and looking outward. We will look at the church as it has been, is now, and would like to be as a member of the Body of Christ. We will look at the community where St. Peter's is planted and at the diocese where we live and at the wider world, which is often joyful, but too often suffering. As we live into this journey, we will celebrate our blessings and our challenges as we grow along the way, remembering that this is a journey not just of transition, but of transformation and new life.
As we prepare 325 years of ministry, we say to all, "Come and catch us celebrating,"* not just 325 years of ministry but 2,000+ years of the gift of Jesus Christ.
Yours in faith,
|

God Makes a Straight Line with a Crooked Path
(Pastor Deborah)
|
|
My journey has been a twisty one. The symbol I like for it is a labyrinth - a labyrinth twists and turns and just when you think you know where you're going, it takes you someplace else, but you can't get lost, because the path goes to only one destination. I didn't know where I was going, but God did, and it was a great surprise to get a call to ordination relatively late in life.
I started life in Little Falls, NJ, and grew up in Caldwell. I was a child of the 60s, and after two years of college, I "stopped out" and joined VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and served for a year on the Rosebud Lakota Reservation in South Dakota where I developed a passion for social justice and learned what winter really is. I subsequently lived various places and eventually returned to NJ and then New York City where I worked at NYU and then book publishing, getting involved in union organizing in both places. A few years later I enrolled in Rutgers, earning a BA and MA in labor studies and moved to New Brunswick. I eventually went to work for the Rutgers Labor Education Center, directing projects to help unemployed and underemployed people get education, training and better jobs.
Around 1980 my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and my mom need help, so I began writing and editing as a freelancer. For a while Alzheimer's was my major focus, and I worked with a support and advocacy group whose efforts resulted in some new legislation and in the creation of the Alzheimer's Institute at UMDNJ. After my father died, I went back to full time work as coordinator of the Urban Women's Job Center which helped "displaced homemakers" and single moms to get training for "non-traditional" (well-paying) jobs. From there I went to Middlesex County College where I directed the New Brunswick Career Preparation Center. Do we see a pattern here? Next was a position as a development officer at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Once again, I was helping to create or expand programs and raising the funds to support them, mostly for students from financially distressed backgrounds.
After two year there, I was restless to do something new and took a look at my experience and skills. I started a consulting business called Working Ideas and began working with nonprofit groups and churches to develop new programs and raise funds to support them. That business brought me to Perth Amboy where I developed programs and proposals from 1990 to 1998 when I went back to work for Rutgers as a development writer. Finally, in 2002, I enrolled at General Theological Seminary in New York. How on earth did I get from the secular life to a spiritual one? When I was twenty, I turned to my priest for help and didn't get it, so I turned my back on the church - and on God - and began a wilderness journey that lasted more than twenty-five years. I didn't even bother to curse God, as I no longer believed at all. The turning point came when a Jewish friend introduced me to Erich Fromm's work and I read his book You Shall be as Gods. I was fascinated by the chapter that described how to keep the Orthodox Sabbath, and I tried it one Saturday. It opened my mind and my heart just enough to give God a chance to get in, and I turned and began a journey out of the wilderness.
People of faith began to come into my life and God spoke and acted through them, slowly reeling me in over several years. Perth Amboy played a large part in that journey. While I was working in this city, I could hardly ignore the faith that seemed to drip out of the air. One person with whom I did a lot of work truly lived his deep faith in a prophetic way, and it was he who brought me to Christ. It was in praying for his welfare that I first heard a holy voice guiding me, and it was shortly after that, on Christmas Eve 1993, that I wandered into Christ Church, New Brunswick, and that was it. God had caught me. In the years that followed, church and faith became the center of my life and I heard the call to ordained ministry, which is a whole other story for some other time.
Returning to Perth Amboy is like returning to my spiritual birthplace, and to have the privilege of ministering at St. Peter's is a great and unexpected joy. It is a remarkable place with wonderful people, and I see a future in which this blessed church will be even more mission-focused and will truly be a beacon for this community, spreading the light of Christ where there is darkness. I live in gratitude that God never let me go and as living proof of Christ's forgiveness and redemption.

"Dolly Day Holly Day" Bazaar
|
|
Our annual Christmas bazaar, a major fund raising event, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 14th and 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Parish House. This year will feature collectible dolls for show and sale.
As usual there will be sales of crafts, a gift basket raffle, food for sale, and indoor garage sale, and baked goods sale. We will again feature a "cookie walk" in which you will be able to create your own cookie assortment for $8 a pound. Naturally, many many bakers will be needed, so please consider donating your specialties. And please if you do donate, attach a note listing any possible problems for people with allergies. (Contains nuts, or peanuts, etc.)
DONATIONS While a group of crafter will be supplying many of the items for sale, additional donations of more crafts are most welcome. If you have items to contribute to the indoor garage sale, please be sure they are in clean and usable condition. (No clothing please.) Drop them off at the Parish House no later than November 5th or 6th so that they can be properly sorted and priced.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Setting up for the bazaar will take place on Thursday and Friday, November 12th and 13th, during the day and evening. There is much to be done, particularly with decorating. Kitchen and other help will also be needed for both days of the event, especially for that Sunday. Contact Barbara Jankowski (732) 721-8206 or Elaine Leiter (732) 738-4138 to volunteer and for additional information on the work schedule.

This year special Advent envelopes, instead of folders, will be mailed to our parishioners. In the future we hope to have these special envelopes included in the box with the weekly envelopes.

Though Advent (literally "arrival") has been observed for centuries as a time to contemplate Christ's' birth, most people today acknowledge it only with a blank look. For the vast majority of us, December flies by in a flurry of activities, and what is called "the holiday season" turns out to be the most stressful time of the year.
It is also a time of contrasting emotions. We are eager, yet frazzled' sentimental, yet indifferent. One minute we glow at the thought of getting together with our family and friends; the next we feel utterly lonely. Our hope is mingled with dread, our anticipation with despair. We sense the deeper meanings of the season but grasp at them in vain' and in the end, all the bustle leaves us frustrated and drained....
We miss the essence of Christmas unless we become, in the words of Eberhard Arnold, "mindful of how Christ's birth took place." Once we do, we will sense immediately that Advent marks something momentous: God's coming into our midst. That coming is not just something that happened in the past. It is a recurring possibility here and now. And thus Advent is not merely a commemorative event or an anniversary, but a yearly opportunity for us to consider the future, second Advent - the promised coming of God's kingdom on earth.

Soon it will be time to haul out the holly once - again or in this case clip your holly trees and prepare to make wreaths and otherwise decorate our beautiful church for the holiday season. This year our decorating day will be Saturday, December 12th. We begin work at 9:00 a.m. and continue until approximately noon when we enjoy lunch. It's a day of fellowship and fun.
Wear work clothes. Bring gloves, clippers and cutters, if you have them. Be prepared to make wreaths, string greenery, and set up trees. There's something for every set of eager hands to do. Folks are also needed to help set up and serve lunch. Donations of food are always welcome.
Holly donations: We need a good supply of holly to make the many wreaths for the church. If you can contribute any holly clippings from your own trees or those of friends and relatives, please drop them off or bring them with you. Our clipping crew also makes house calls. Let Dcn. Kathie know if you would like a visit to your tree.

Our annual service of readings and songs, Lessons and Carols, will be held on Sunday, December 13th, at 10:30 a.m. Always a favorite with our parishioners and the community, this program is a great start to Christmas observances. Everyone is invited to a reception in the Parish House following the program.
The choral offerings range from modern to popular to classical - something for every taste. It is a great opportunity to invite friends and relatives to join you in attending and to introduce them to our church and choir.
Donations of finger food for the reception will be needed and should be dropped off at the Parish House before the service.

In November, our altar will be tended by Brigitte Pincelli who will host the monthly meeting at the Pincelli home on Thursday, November 19th at 7:30 p.m. Cherrill Garoniak will tend the altar in December.
The annual Christmas party is scheduled for Wednesday, December 9th, at the Barge Restaurant. Prior to dinner, Guild member will attend the Wednesday evening Eucharist service at 6:45 p.m.
COOKIE WALK: BAKERS NEEDED! As it did last year, the Altar Guild members will be running the cookie walk at this year's bazaar on November 14th and 15th. A cookie walk lets buyers select the number and type of cookies they want which are then charged on a per pound basis. For this to be successful we NEED COOKIES. We ask for volunteers to bake their best cookies. Please contact Cherrill (732) 826-5444 if you need more information or to tell her what you plan to donate.

Shadows of branches wave across my curtains As if talking to the wind Nodding and agreeing that they're witnessed How we've sinned. We fouled the skies and waters of this our Island home With acid rain and chemicals of sickly, choking Foam.
The lust for money is evil, or so the Bible told. You can't buy into Heaven in spite of all your gold. Nor emeralds fine nor diamonds can grant Your entry there. The only price exacted is accept God in Your prayer.
So keep your hearts wide open if someday You would see Paradise and loved ones all living in glory. With Jesus in His garden, with flowers oh so grand And reaching out to touch you - to hold His holy hand. For truly He does love you, if you could only know The sacrifice that He made, so with Him you Could go.

You can help bring the joy and light of Christmas to the eyes of children in need by participating in our Giving Tree which will appear at the back of the church in late November or early December. Tags on the tree contain information on the age and gender of a child who needs clothing or toys. You are invited to select a tag and start shopping!
As the current economic situation remains extremely difficult for so many, more children than ever face the possibility of a bleak Christmas. No holiday is more anticipated by them than Christmas. Please help make it joyful for them and it will make you Christmas more joyful as well.
Please wrap your gift, attach the tag from the tree for identification, and deliver it to the church or Parish House no later than December 15th. This deadline is necessary for our elves to properly sort and deliver the gifts. Your generosity is always overwhelming. Thank you in advance.

Our sold out bus trip to Sight and Sound in Lancaster, PA, on September 26th was a wonderful experience. On October 10th we went to the Salvation Army and prepared and served a spaghetti and meatball dinner which was enjoyed greatly by those attending. This work service to the community is one that our members find very satisfying.
Despite a rainy start to the day on October 18th, the weather cleared by the time we reached Cranford so that our participation in the Autism Walk was not a washout. We raised $564 for this cause. Remember, it is never too late to donate.
BREAKFAST TIME AGAIN We will be holding another Youth Group breakfast on Saturday, November 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Parish House. Our past breakfasts have been successful fund raisers for the group. Tickets cost $8 and can be purchased from our member or advisors.
Menu: Hash Browns, Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, Bacon, Roll, Orange Juice, Coffee/Tea, Fruit Salad, Deserts

We are continuing our work raising funds on behalf of St. Church. The first two gift auctions of the season were great successes thanks to all who attended and helped out. The next auctions will be on November 22nd and December 6th. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the auction starts at 6:00 p.m. Remember that a selection of food is always available for you to enjoy. If you have the time, and especially if you've never attended before, come join us to support us and have a good time.
Our next meeting will be on November 4th in the Parish House at 7:30 p.m. Any woman over age eighteen is welcome to join us. Our members are extremely active in the annual Bazaar which will be held November 14th and 15th, and there will be many opportunities to help with cooking, baking, selling, and more. Even if you could only donate a small amount of your time it would be appreciated greatly.
Sincerely, Elaine S. Leiter President

Christmas Shopping with Gift Cards
|
|
It's that time of the year when we begin to consider our Christmas shopping. Though some find it a chore, we all relish the idea of buying that something special for our loved ones.
With that in mind, St. Peter's has a fundraiser (similar to the Shop Rite Gift Cards, which will continue to be available) where parishioners and the church can both benefit. This fundraiser encompasses many more merchants than just Shop Rite. Merchandise such as clothing, movies, books and music, dining (from casual to fine), electronics, gas and auto, groceries, hardware, home improvements, to name just a few, is available with gift cards.
Parishioners can buy gift cards for these vendors through St. Peter's which then receives a percentage of the purchase price. The amount of the gift cards and percentage varies with the vendor. The important thing to remember is that it cost you nothing more than the face value of the card, yet we benefit.
So before you go shopping, check with Grant Brown (732) 238-5646 or after the 10:00 a.m. service, for details and to find out if the merchant you plan to patronize is a participant in this program.
