Sensory-Motor Development
|
|
Small Muscle – Infants 9 to 12 months will:
|
|
|
- look at pictures in a book,
- open drawers and cupboards,
- place one object inside another
- may favor their right or left hand, and
- grasp a small object with their thumb and first finger.
|
|
|
Large Muscle - Infants 9 to 12 months will:
|
|
|
- bring together two objects held in their hands,
- clap their hands together as you clap,
- crawl,
- stand alone,
- walk holding onto furniture,
- climb on furniture and stairs,
- roll a ball on the floor and go after it, and
- step sideways holding onto furniture.
|
|
|
Self-Help – Infants 9 to 12 months can:
|
|
|
- feed themselves small pieces of food, and
- eat with a spoon (messily).
|
|
|
|
|
At 9 to 12 months of age infants:
|
|
|
- practice saying a word over and over until it sounds right,
- imitate sounds that things make such as "choo-choo" for train,
- combine words and gestures such as "bye-bye" and wave,
- may repeat the same word such as "mama," in answer to any question,
- stop doing something when told "No", and
- indicate a need with a gesture.

|
|
|
Social-Personal Development
|
|
Now the infants at 9 to 12 months of age:
|
|
|
- may cling to a familiar person in the presence of a stranger,
- may act stubborn when you ask them to do something,
- may show hurt feelings when scolded,
- play "pat-a-cake" and roll a ball to another person,
- will "give and take" things from another person,
- respond to their own names,
- wave "bye-bye",
- react to looks on faces and to gestures which show feelings, and
- may show more trust for people they are with most often.

|
|
During these months infants:
|
|
|
- show more curiosity by exploring a nearby area,
- may imitate people more,
- stop doing something when told "no",
- react to the sound of their own name,
- put a name with familiar people, even if not always correctly,
- may remember games they have played before,
- can dump objects out of a box or can, and
- look at pictures in a picture book.
