If you are paying less than $4500.00 to $5500.00 for a Harness, Reserve, and paraglider, DON'T BUY IT!!! Used equipment can be found for less but it is crucial to know YOU ARE NOT SAVING MONEY. Used equipment has a very short life span, especially here in the desert, you have no idea what it has gone through and the question really comes down to.....how much is your safety worth??

The technology for paragliders to become much safer has advanced so incredibly fast in the last few years to buy anything more than 2 years old and with more than a few hours on it is simply a mistake. Those of us who have spent years at the flying sites and in the air have seen far too many pilots dealing with the consequences of buying used equipment.

A helmet and radio are mandatory items($100-$200 each), and a vario is helpful but I don't recommend one until after considerable thermal time, ($450-$2000). Most students purchase their own gear halfway through the training. This helps them get a true feel with their own gear.

I have found that saving up and buying brand new helps to create a confident pilot who trusts his/her equipment. Which in turn makes it efficient for me to have you flying relaxed and confidently in more dynamic conditions sooner,(Going up). My students love their new quality gear and fly like it.

I can also get any other brand of equipment to meet each individuals needs. I am not going to force you into buying gear through me, but I do require you to have us do a thorough and full inspection on any gear you bring in to train and or fly with. A full line strength test, porosity test, correct weight range, reserve inspection, throw, re-pack test will be done. I have had to tell numerous students that bought cheap used gear that I would not let them fly it because of it's age and or condition so it is best to consult the experts before you make a purchase. I will get you in the best gear for you at the best cost possible.

And let's think about it for a moment, we are running off of mountains here, so the best brand new gear is just a great idea.

Don’t let financial insecurity effect your decisions with a sport like paragliding. Accept the fact that it is not a cheap sport and that you might have to save in order to get quality instruction and quality gear. There is plenty to do for the season or two you are saving. There is an incredible amount to be learned by coming to the hill and watching, driving for the pilots flying XC, being a volunteer at comps, going to your local pilots meetings, studying weather, studying weather, studying weather, check out the local instructors, ask the local pilots who the safest instructor is. You will also be helping to teach the pilots who bought cheap used gear, were rushed through instruction, and fly like it, that there is a better way to go as long as you respect the sport and have patience. It’s that type of attitude that will insure you with a life full of fun flying. I have had numerous students save for 2 seasons plus, now they are flying well with great equipment. Not to mention I did as well. When I started flying paragliders in Phx there were 2 other active PG pilots, it took me a long time to be flying with them. I could have been in the air sooner had I chosen to get cheaper instruction and cheap used gear. I'm really glad I didn't.
