Recommendations for Texturewood ® T&G Flooring Products
|
|
- All Texturewood® flooring is produced from kiln dried stock and shipped at a moisture content of approximately 6-8%; however, this may vary some during transport or upon reaching its final destination, due to higher or lower humidity and varying site conditions. Therefore, we recommend our flooring be acclimated on the job site in the same environment in which it will remain once installed, for a period of 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the location. It is up to the installer to determine what the best moisture level is for the climate. We strongly recommend that our flooring be installed by a professional flooring contractor. It is crucial to the satisfactory outcome of a wood flooring installation that an accurate site assessment be taken and any needed adjustments be made. Varying moisture content between the flooring and site environment is the most frequent contributing factor to problems.
- Texturewood® flooring can be successfully installed on and above grade level. It is not recommended that this flooring be installed below grade. If wood floors are to be installed over a concrete slab, please contact us and we will be glad to send you the additional information required for this process. Installation should take place only after the structure is tight and dry. All tape and texturing, painting and interior masonry work should be completed prior to installation. Underlayment should be clean, level and dry. There should be no more than 2% difference in moisture content between it and the flooring you plan to install.
- Determine the direction of the flooring so it runs perpendicular to the floor joists, thus allowing you to nail into the joists and keep tight joints.
- Determine a starting point, preferably on a long wall with few obstacles. If such a wall does not exist, then begin in the center of the room and work both directions from the center. Allow a 3/4" expansion joint around the perimeter of each room.
- Measure the room for square then snap a chalk line for the first row.
- Always dry fit all pieces before applying glue. After assuring that the sub floor is clean and dry, determining the starting point, and having pre-fit all the pieces in the first row, you're now ready to begin installation. Apply a heavy bead of glue (construction adhesive-1qt. tube per 100 sq. feet) to the underside of the flooring. Do not use a waterbase glue. Return flooring piece to its original position along starting point. Place floor nailer into position, nailing into the nail groove through the tongue at approximately every 10-12" on center (closer for wider boards). We provide a nail groove in all of our custom milled T&G flooring which allows a tighter fit and easier installation.
- Sanding procedures vary on smooth floors vs. textured floors. Our Texturewood® floors require much less sanding/screening than smooth floors due to the fact that a textured floor is usually the floor of choice when searching for a rustic or distressed look. We recommend using a 150-180 grit used screen. Screen lightly but sufficiently enough to knock down any high knots or edges and to remove any splinters in preparation for sealer coat.
- Vacuum the entire floor thoroughly, removing all dust and foreign debris to assure proper adhesion of the finish.
- When applying a urethane finish, please follow manufacturers recommendations. We recommend 3-4 finish coats for a deep beautiful finish-but reserve that decision to the installer. Lightly screen, vacuum, and clean with a damp mop between each coat. Never wet mop. We recommend applying finish coats at a rate of one coat per day.
- Restrict heavy traffic and furniture placement for four to five days to avoid damaging the floor during the curing process.

*Note: These guidelines are recommendations only. Installation procedures may vary (i.e. reclaimed vs. new floors or strip vs. plank flooring, etc.) We recommend consulting with a professional flooring installer. Also, follow National Wood Flooring Association installation guidelines when installing Texturewood® floors.
