Recertification is required every five years to maintain "active" Certification. Recertification may be accomplished by re-testing or by the continuing medical education (CME) method.

You are due to recertify five years from your certification date. If needed, you have an additional year grace period to submit your credits, after which date you will need to retest. You will be considered "inactive" during the grace period.

Those who choose to recertify by the CME method must earn 60 CME credits during the five year period. The credits need to be in specific categories and fall within the scope of practice for a medical assistant.
