I harvested 2 Doe this past season with RGC tags, filled half of my deep freezer. I love having doe tags available.

No Doe tags does not seem the answer. Maybe 2 tags per member directly assigned to the member for the season. Those who choose or don't use tags can give them to another member. This would prevent having to track/ manage tags and make them available without others taking general tags and holding on to them.

FWC issues tags based upon acres. We only had somewhere around 50 tags for 8,000 ish acres. There are plenty of does and we are never going to be QDMA surrounded by WMA and private clubs. I say we keep the tags.

What would be the pro's/con's to this? If we didn't get tags what's the alternative for members to take anterless deer?
Kyle Showalter       Showalter_M1@Yahoo.com 3-1-2024 8:07 PM
Mason, the alternative is to be run the same as private land. Does could only be taken in archery or during November “doe days” (typically 4 days near thanksgiving) on club lands. Any doe taken would count against that persons 5 total deer.

Just so everyone knows, according to the amount of land we use, we get 49 antlerless deer tags per season.

Eliminating does tags will help the land we have produce more mature bucks. Eliminates harvest of male deer claimed antlerless via tag. Also eliminates harvest of later season female deer which a lot of have been bread and carry nexts years deer. Any doe shot with a tag in mid to late November through end of season more than likely carry’s babies in her.

There is a deer sanctuary of almost 13,000 acres adjacent to our club where no hunting is allowed (impact area). There are roughly 16,000 acres of CBJTC (North Range) where dog runs occur for two weeks, and they can’t shoot does. There is an additional 5000 acres of WMA which is not regularly open to hunting. The rifle areas of the WMA compromise nearly 20,000 acres and are antlered deer only unless a special quota hunt. Add those up (along with cantonment blocks we can’t hunt) and we boarder over 50,000 acres of roughly 78,000 acres of CBJTC lands where female deer cannot legally be harvested. Contrary to some opinions the reality is we are overpopulated with does and the bucks don’t need to leave their safe areas as they have plentiful does and other resources.

Most areas of the WMA only bucks can be taken. Although 5 or 6 “good” bucks a year may be harvested in these spots, they have roughly 7 times the land we have. Based on the math we should see MAYBE one or two (if we’re lucky) good bucks a year if we don’t harvest does. FWC allowed archery hunting of does on approximately 4700 acres of land adjacent to our club for 67 days during the 2023-2024 season. This information can be verified via their brochure. Larger bucks are often seen in these areas. It can’t be coincidence the areas which allow more does to be taken also see better bucks. Given these observations, if we get rid of our antlerless tags, it is highly likely we will see less mature bucks.

We share boundaries with at least two private clubs. The land we have is divided amongst FWC, mining, and military exclusive use land. I have run trail cameras in most every block we have and can attest to seeing spotted fawns year-round. This can be attributed to the lack of a fully defined breeding season in this part of country as deer procreate year-round in this area. Female deer harvested throughout the entire season have the potential to be pregnant.

For those so opposed to tags, by keeping the doe tags we limit ourselves to 49 antlerless does a season. If eliminated each member could take two does during archery or doe days. For easy math say we had just 100 members. This means we as a club could have the potential to harvest 200 antlerless deer in a season. This doesn’t include if family afforded the same privileges as a member do the same. This is at least four times the amount we can under the tag program. I do not believe we would take this many, but the potential would exist. For those who think we should take less does this serves as justification to keep the tags as tags could greatly reduce the amount of does the club could take.

By keeping the tags, we allow members the flexibility to fill their freezer on their schedule and not just archery or four days in November. If we use actual numbers and not just personal beliefs, we see the tags are more beneficial than not and should be kept.

I say keep the doe tags. Do a raffle with a 20-25 dollar buy in. If more people put in for the raffle then we have doe tags refund the money to the ones who didn’t get a tag. Use the money that’s collected to fund big buck and hog. Make the tags non transferable between members. If we don’t raffle them all off put the rest up for open use the last 30 days of gun season. Also impose a fine for any buck that does not meet state regulations so that we have to make sure it’s not an undersized buck. Make it a club rule that tags can’t be used for undersized bucks.
