Dick and Shirley Hansen

Class of 1954 ~ Honorary. Richard Rulon "Dick" Hansen. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: My stalwart Dad quietly endured to the end. Richard R. Hansen passed away Sunday morning, October 25, 2015. He struggled with dementia and kidney failure, however he passed peacefully in the quietness of the morning. Richard was born on April 28, 1935 in Provo, Utah, to Rulon B. & Reanon Wilson Hansen. Richard was the older of two boys. Gordon W. Hansen, his younger brother, currently lives in Alameda, California. Richard lived two blocks from the BYH Lower Campus and he attended Brigham Young Junior High School, but when his Jr. High School sweetheart Shirley Anderson, decided to attend Provo High School, he followed her there. He married Shirley in June of 1957. Richard worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for many years, but he also made a career of serving in the military with the Utah National Guard for 42 years. He was a Master Sergeant with the Region V NCO Academy at Camp Williams. He was very proud of his "one and only" child, Stacey L. Gilmore. When he was asked how many children he had, he always responded by saying, "I have one, she is perfect and that's all I need." Although perfection has not yet been obtained, it was fun to think that I was perfect in my Dad's eyes. Richard also loved his "one and only" grandson, Benjamin H. Gilmore. Together they loved to talk about hot rods and had fun working on wood projects in my dad's garage. This past year has been harder than most for him because his wife of 57 years, Shirley A. Hansen, died in August of 2014. The dementia he suffered with for many years, was both a curse and a blessing. At times he would forget that Mom had passed and would tell others that she was "just shopping." Services for him were held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Camp Williams, at 17111 S. Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah. There was a viewing with a military graveside service afterward. The family suggests donations to the Utah Alzheimber's Association at www.alz.org/utah or by calling 1-800-272-3900.
