Brigham Young University, The Earliest Classes - 1904 to 1935.

In this Alumni Directory, our focus is on the often-forgotten BY Academy senior high school classes between 1877 and 1903, and on the BY High School senior classes from 1904 to 1968.

The academic year 1903-1904 marked the first official year of both Brigham Young University and Brigham Young University High School, after Brigham Young Academy had been dissolved in June 1903 at the end of the 1902-1903 academic year. Since 1876, Brigham Young Academy had always been a secondary school, with a relative handful of "collegiate graduates". The 1904 graduating class, for example, included 5 BYU graduates [13%], and 38 BYHS graduates [87%].

As of November 16, 2008, we have compiled a list of the 745 earliest graduates of Brigham Young University, beginning in 1904 and continuing through 1935 [see below]. Of this total, 291 (39%) had first graduated from high school at Brigham Young Academy or Brigham Young University High School.

Our goal is to list all Brigham Young high school graduates, and we include 454 (61%) collegiate-only names simply to reduce ambiguity. For more convenient searching, try the name index search.

University, Book 10, page 242. ~ ~ ~ ~ Harlan M. Adams was born circa 1894-1902, perhaps SLC or Provo, Utah. His parents were Walter Adams and Violet Martin. He married Olive Gertrude Reynolds in October 1931 in Salt Lake City, and they were later divorced. ~ ~ ~ ~ Olive Gertrude Reynolds was born August 23, 1898 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Julia Alleman Caine, highly respected Social Studies, American History, Development of Civilization and Religion at Brigham Young University High School, 1940-1965. She married Charles Avery Caine. ~ ~ ~ ~ Julia Dorothea Alleman was born on February 27, 1900 in Springville, Utah. Her parents were Charles Albert Alleman and Hannah Dorthea Andersen Hansen Alleman. Julia married Charles Avery Caine on June 25, 1933. Julia Alleman Caine died two days after her 76th birthday, on February 29, 1976, in Provo, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ Because of Julia A. Caine, the young people in Utah schools were able to receive a better background in the study of economics. Beginning in the summer of 1953, selected Utah educators were given scholarships to attend a three-week workshop, the BYU Economic Education Workshop, to learn more about the field of economics. Julia Caine, a teacher at Brigham Young High School, and Dr. A. Smith Pond (Chairman of the Department of Economics from 1952 to 1955, Chairman of the Agricultural Economics Department from 1938 to 1955, Acting Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1955 to 1957, Dean of the Graduate School at the time of his death, April 1, 1959), recognized that there was a need to have classroom teachers in the elementary and secondary schools who understood the various economic principles and concepts. The workshop was held annually from 1953 to 1966, and Julia Caine served as the Assistant Director of the workshop for several years. During workshop sessions, teachers developed projects, unit teaching plans, and resource units which they could use in the schools. As a result, the young people in Utah schools were able to receive a better early education in the study of economics. ~ ~ ~ ~ Caine, Julia Alleman, was born February 27, 1900 in Springville, Utah, and died February 29, 1976 in Provo, Utah, after a long illness. Her interment, Springville City Cemetery. She is buried near her husband, Avery, who survived her by one year. Charles Avery Caine was born August 24, 1898, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His parents were Charles Arthur Caine and Fannie Mary (Mary) Roundy. C. Avery Caine died January 17, 1977, in Provo, Utah. His interment, Springville City Cemetery.

Eugene Allen [R. for Robert - BY Academy Commerce teacher 1900-1902] and A. Inez Knight [A. for Amanda - daughter of Jesse Knight - she was Matron of BY Academy 1900-1902.] The children of Eugene and Inez were: William Eugene Allen [BYH Class of 1919], Jesse Knight Allen [BYH Class of 1921], Robert Knight Allen [BYH Class of 1926~H], Joseph Knight Allen [BYH Class of 1928?], and Mark Knight Allen. J. Knight Allen married Alice Leila Richards on September 10, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on August 24, 1990 in Palo Alto, California. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Jesse Knight Allen, 86, died on August 24, 1990, in the Stanford University Hospital. He was a former instructor in the BYU School of Business. A funeral service was held in California on Wednesday, August 29, 1990, and another service was held Friday, Aug. 31, 1990 in Salt Lake City. Burial was in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Salt Lake City. J. Knight Allen was a grandson of Jesse Knight, the mining magnate for whom the Jesse Knight Humanities Building at Brigham Young University is named. As a youth, J. Knight Allen worked at Knight Woolen Mills, and Knight Trust and Savings Co. He attended the BYU Training School and BY High School, and graduated from BYU. During the Depression, he worked for Zions Bank in Salt Lake City and taught at the University of Santa Clara in California. He was Director of Research for the California Bankers Association in San Francisco and worked during World War II on federal economic programs in Washington, D.C. Mr. Allen was a Stanford Graduate School of Business faculty member for 15 years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission, beginning in 1926, to northern California. [Published in the Deseret News, Wednesday, August 29, 1990.]

University, Book 10, page 472. ~ ~ ~ ~ He was born August 4, 1908 in Provo, Utah. His parents: R. Eugene Allen (Robert Eugene Allen -- from Coalville, Utah -- BY Academy Commerce Faculty 1900-1902), and A. Inez Knight (Amanda Inez Knight -- daughter of Jesse Knight -- she was Matron of BY Academy 1900-1902). Robert Knight Allen entered the BYU Training School in Kindergarten and continued through BYH and BYU until he received his BA degree. In 1923 he left B.Y. High School early, at the age of 15, to enter BYU in September 1923 at the age of 16. Although he was a member of the BYH Class of 1926, because of his early promotion he did not receive a diploma from BYH. After graduation from BYU, he married Elizabeth Taylor on March 12, 1934. Robert Knight Allen died April 22, 1976 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His interment, Provo City Cemetery.

Hinckley with his decision to stay in school. Discouraged and finding himself among "kids who had not come up the rough way," Anderson had already rolled up his bed to go home when he saw Principal Hinckley. As he explained, "Hinckley listened and without my realizing, kept me an hour. He told stories and listened to mine. In the end he said, 'I'll gamble on you. If you agree to stay till the end of the term, I'm sure you'll come on top.' I went back, unrolled the bed and started over. By three months I was getting As." Nels Anderson's book, Deseret Sands, is his tribute to his teacher.

They were married in the St. George Temple, June 5, 1917. Their family consists of four girls and one boy; Carol, Gloria, Marilyn, Carmela, and Vasco Jordan. Annie Atkin Tanner died on November 6, 1972 in Provo, Utah. Her interment, Provo City Cemetery, Utah.
