Her parents were Karl Frederick Reinhard Maeser and Sarah Caroline Shepherd Maeser (Reinhard and Sade). She married Tenus Thompson. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Evelyn Maeser Thompson, age 93, of Bountiful, and formerly of Provo, died January 3, 1997. She was born December 12, 1903 in Beaver, Utah, to Reinhard and Sarah Shepherd Maeser. She married Tenus Thompson on August 4, 1927 in Pocatello, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Jordan River LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1982. Evelyn received her education in the Beaver and Provo schools, including Brigham Young High School, where she received a teaching certificate. She attended BYU and Utah State. She began teaching in Spring City, Utah, where she met Tenus. After her marriage, they made their first home in Spring City. They later moved to Provo where she lived until moving to Bountiful. While in Provo, she taught at the Page School, Edgemont, and Cherry Hill Elementary. Evelyn taught for 22 years in the Alpine School District. She was a past president of the Provo BPW, and a member of the LDS Church, serving as a stake Primary counselor, and a teacher for many years. She is survived by four sons and one daughter, Robert M. (Nancy) Thompson of Price; Fred (Eilene) Thompson of Salt Lake; Frank A. (Afton) Thompson of Kaysville; Mrs. Melvin (Shirley) Bangerter of Bountiful; and John S. (Linda) Thompson of Citrus Heights, California; 21 grandchildren; 35 great and great- great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held held Tuesday, January 7, 1997, in Provo. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Deseret News, Sunday, January 5, 1997.]

Two years in Rye, New York, helping Ivy & Vern Peterson. Following three years in Provo attending BYU, graduated in 1927. Taught a year at Uinta H.S. in Vernal, Utah (1927-28). Went to New Zealand for two years to help parents. Father was mission president (1928-30). 1930 arrived back and was married to Lloyd Redford. Two months in Logan, then back to Monroe for a year. Back to Provo to work then moved to Salt Lake for Lloyd's work. Marriage lasted for eight years--three children born, Barbara, David, and Dorothy Ann. In 1938 returned to Monroe--divorced in Sept. 1938. Fall of 1938, reinstated teaching certificate. Following school term taught in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. Left for Columbia University for advanced study. Returned to Ogden at Lewis Jr. High--met Roy Woodmansee. After four years in Ogden, moved to Salt Lake to take teaching job at South High. Married to Roy July 26, 1944. Moved into home on Broadmoor in SLC in 1947. Roy took an assignment in Tripoli, Oct. 1951 - June 54. 1968 retired from teaching after years at South, East, and Highland High schools. 1977 Roy's legs amputated. February 1985, Roy passes away. March 14, 1995, she celebrated her 90th birthday. ~ ~ ~ ~ Louisa Magleby was born March 14, 1905 in Monroe, Utah. Her parents were John Ephraim Magleby and Jane Adam Warnock. She married twice: First, to Lloyd Hubbard Redford on June 12, 1930, and Second, to LeRoy Gordon Woodmansee on July 26, 1944 in Dillon, Montana. Hyrum Manwaring, English & Training School, 1907-1909, 1911-1914. ~ ~ ~ ~ Hyrum Manwaring was born in Granger, Utah. Because he was forced to work away from home at 10, his schooling was neglected. When he was 13 his family moved to a more productive farm in Mapleton, Utah. At 17 he met Bessie Bird, also of Mapleton and she encouraged him to get an education. He worked hard to gain that education despite severe financial hardships. He served a mission to Australia from 1899 to 1902. After his mission, he married Bessie in the Salt Lake Temple in 1903. He graduated from Brigham Young Academy in Provo, Utah, completing his high school work when he was 29. He went on to teach younger students at Brigham Young Academy while studying college level classes. Following his BYU graduation in 1909, he was principal of the Uintah Stake Academy in Vernal, Utah for two years. He returned to Provo to study and received his B.A. degree in 1911. He taught English while he did graduate work there. In 1914, he came to Ricks Academy as the head of the English Department. He was also in charge of student body programs and dances for many years. When Ricks became a junior college in 1923, he was made Dean of the College Department and served as the Head of the Department of Psychology and Education. He completed his master's degree at Brigham Young University in Provo in 1924 and returned to teach at Ricks. His doctorate was earned a few years later from the University of California. Hyrum Manwaring served as President of Ricks College from 1930 to 1944. He fought to keep the school open and operated by the Church rather than by the state. He continued to teach school for nine years after his release as president and then part-time until his death in 1956, just a few months after the death of his beloved wife, Bessie. He taught for over 50 years in Church schools. ~ ~ ~ ~ Hyrum Wilkins Manwaring was born on June 23, 1877 in Granger (Brighton), Salt Lake County, Utah. His parents were Herbert Manwaring and Clarissa Wilkins Manwaring. He married Bessie Bird on September 16, 1903 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on September 8, 1956 in Boise, Idaho. Interment, Fielding, Idaho Falls County, Idaho.

He became one of the most respected architects in Utah, and a great influence on the development of the upper campus of Brigham Young University. Fred Markham was born on July 3, 1902 in Spanish Fork, Utah. His parents were Joseph Markham [BYA High School Class of 1886] and Mary C. Lewis [BYA High School Class of 1892]. Knowing the value of education, Fred's family moved from Spanish Fork to Provo, and in the fall of 1911 he started at the Brigham Young University Training School in the Fourth Grade. He entered Brigham Young High School in the fall of 1915 and graduated in 1919. As a senior he served as the White and Blue Reporter, a prized office. His brother, Joseph Aldus Markham, graduated from BYH one year earlier, in 1919. His sister, Lucile, graduated from BYH several years later, in 1925. In 1923 Fred L. Markham earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University with a major in mathematics and a minor in chemistry. During his college years he continued to participate as a member of the White and Blue student newspaper staff. He served as editor of the BYH Banyan yearbook of 1921. A good athlete, he was a member of the BYU track team in 1921-1922. He participated in varsity dramatic plays in 1920, 1921 and 1922. He was elected president of his BYU Junior Class in 1922. Following university graduation, he served an LDS mission to the Eastern States in 1924-1926. After his mission, he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture from 1927 to 1930. Returning to Utah, he taught intermittently at Provo High School, and Granite High School in Salt Lake City, 1922 to 1935. Fred married Maude Dixon [BYA High School Class of 1919] on June 25, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Maude graduated from BYU in 1924 with a BS Degree in English. She became a member of the faculty at BY High. Fred L. Markham and Maude Dixon Markham had two daughters and two sons: Diana Markham (Gary) Stewart, Terre Haute, Indiana; Barbara Markham (Weldon) Daines, Salt Lake City, Utah; John Markham and wife, Reeda, Provo, Utah; and Dixon Markham and wife Junece, Provo, Utah. Maude's parents were John De Grey Dixon and Sarah Ann Lewis Dixon. In 1930 he began his practice as an architect with Claude S. Ashworth. He opened an office for personal practice in 1939. Brigham Young University liked his work, and became one of his major clients. Fred L. Markham's design work on the BYU campus includes the following:

William Harrison, Aldus Markham, and Harold Bentley. The earliest teams trained in the pool of the Provo High School when the school was located on Third West between Center and First South streets. Because of burdensome expense, Provo High School closed the pool after very few years of operation. University, Book 8, page 261. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Dr. Milton Marshall, Death Claims Educator, School Board President. ~ ~ Dr. Milton Marshall, 66, dedicated teacher and scientist, died Saturday in the Utah Valley Hospital of what was believed to have been a heart attack which struck him the previous day. He had been a member of the Brigham Young University teaching staff since 1919 and was serving as president of the Provo School District Board of Education, of which he had been a member for 24 years. He was born May 10, 1895 in Vernal, Utah, a son of James and Mary Robinson Marshall. He married Julia Taylor on September 7, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a recipient of the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award for 1961 at BYU for his many years as a teacher of Mathematics and Physics at that institution, where he had served as Chairman of both the Physics and Mathematics departments. He was honored by his scientific colleagues as Chairman of the American Society for Metals, and was a member of the American Physical Society, American Mathematics Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Foundry Society and was the first secretary of the BYU chapter of Sigma XI. In addition to his teaching duties at the University, he served on the Athletic Council and the Campus Planning Committee and as Chairman of the BYU Employees Credit Union. For many years he has been a consultant for the Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company of Provo and has done inspection work for testing laboratories throughout the nation. He served as a cadet in World War I and during World Was II he taught the men of the Army Specialized Training Program at BYU. He also taught a course in instrumentation for Geneva Steel. He received his elementary and high school education in Vernal and BY High School, where he graduated in the Class of 1914. He obtained his bachelor of Arts degree at Brigham Young University in 1918 and obtained his Ph.D. degree at the University of Chicago in 1924. He was also active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served as Superintendent of Sunday School and MIA and as a teacher in various organizations. His hobbies were photography, metal working and mineral and gem collecting. He had an outstanding collection of fluorescent materials which had been displayed at various gem shows. He is survived by his wife, Julia, of Provo, Utah; four sons and one daughter, Dr. John T. Marshall of Springville, Utah; Dr. Robert T. Marshall of Wilmette, Illinois; Mrs. E. M. (Marie - BYH Class of 1943) Miner of Canoga Park, California; Dr. Paul T. Marshall of Henderson, Nevada, and Mark T. Marshall of Tarzana, California. In addition he is survived by 17 grandchildren, and one brother and five sisters, James Earl Marshall of Nampa, Idaho, Mrs. Bud (Ethel) Conner of Pavillion, Wyoming; Mrs. Reuben (Frances) Hartle, Mrs. Merle Merrill and Mrs. Larvin (Ellen) Atwood, all of Vernal, Utah, and Mrs. Burnell (Vera) Hatch of Provo, Utah. His parents were Elijah Walker Mayhew and Rosetta White Mayhew. Wayne married Vera Lenore Hinckley on May 31, 1923. Wayne E. Mayhew died on January 29, 1973. ~ ~ ~ ~ Several years before his death in 1973, Wayne E. Mayhew of Berkeley, California, established a trust fund to provide annual awards in creative writing and fine arts at Brigham Young University in honor of his wife, Vera Hinckley Mayhew, a former BYU student. The first contest, in short story writing, began in 1963 – 64 and has continued annually since then. A second contest, in poetry writing, began in 1974 – 75. Then in 1978 – 79 four additional contests were started. Since that time, two additional contests were added, making eight annual Mayhew contests.
