A daughter of Clarence Vernon and Ruby Williams Davis, she was born in Milford, and educated in Caliente, Nev., until the family moved to Provo. She graduated from BY High in 1952 and earned a B.S. from BYU. She began her teaching career in San Diego, but taught in Provo for 37 years at Wasatch and Provost schools. A master teacher, Emma Lou used her expertise in learning theory and motivation to help children become competent. She loved children and to help them succeed. She was recognized by her peers for outstanding ability in the teaching of reading and language development. Active in Delta Kappa Gamma, NEA, UEA, and PEA, she served in numerous capacities in these organizations. She has sung with several singing groups, most recently with her ward choir. She married A. LeRoy Swensen in the Salt Lake Temple. They shared a rich life together centered on devotion to each other and a shared love of music and travel. He passed away in April 1988. Emma Lou served in all the auxiliaries in the LDS Church at the stake and ward level. A great joy has been serving at the Provo Temple two days a week for the past 10 years. She is survived by the families of her two sisters and one aunt: Lee and DyAnn Smoot and children Chandler and William (Provo); Rod and Mary Alice Roylance and children Jenifer, Sarah Rose, Jessica, and granddaughter Cora Lynn (Springville); and Elma Shipp Hewitt (Provo). Class of 1952. Bruce DeFriez. Chorus. ~ ~ ~ ~ Bruce Curtis DeFriez was born on February 9, 1932 in Orangeville, Emery County, Utah. His parents were Arthur DeFriez and Laura Curtis DeFriez. Arthur and Laura had seven children, including the following four: Shirley Defriez Christensen (1925 - 2003), Dorothy Romine Defriez (1926 - 1926), Bruce Curtis Defriez (1932 - 1986), and Dixie DeFriez Cardall (1939 - 2011). Bruce graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1952. Bruce married Halley Margene Hunsaker (1935 - 1983) on February 21, 1959, in Provo, Utah. She died on June 17, 1983 in Provo. Her interment: East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery in Provo. Bruce C. DeFriez died on April 16, 1986 in Orem, Utah. His interment: also East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, Provo, Utah.

Married Carolyn Barlow, BYH Class of 1956. Lived in Provo, Utah where he attended B.Y. High School. Kent [BYH Class of 1952] and Carolyn Barlow married after having met playing tennis with mutual friends two years earlier. He became a seminary teacher in Copperton, Utah. After two years and the birth of their first son, they pursued pursuing further degrees, Kent a master’s degree and myself a bachelor’s. Kent accomplished his goal at the University of Colorado where he opened a new Institute building and program along with getting a Master’s degree in American History. During this time they were back and forth to Provo and Carolyn graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Education just before their fourth child was born. During the next few years they moved to San Diego, Provo and then to Salt Lake, pursuing degrees and teaching. They settled in Salt Lake in 1967 where the last of their six children were born. They are Garth Barlow Dunford, Charles Isaac Dunford, Julie Dunford Pond, Gregory Joel Dunford, Shelley Hardy Dunford and Paul Harold Dunford. All married now with many children to their credit. After experiencing a trip to Israel in 1971, they fell in love with travel and led several tours to Europe and back to Israel during the next few years. The highlight came when they were asked to return to Israel and teach for the winter and spring term in 1981. This they did with their children and had a marvelous experience together. Since that time they have been able to return to Israel and teach the spring and summer terms for many years. During the last ten years the Dunford family moved to Chicago, Boston and Honolulu where Kent served in the Church Education System. Carolyn was employed by CES, a real estate office and Cambridge College. At the end of their teaching career they spent a year as missionaries serving at the Institute in Honolulu and the Church College in Hawaii. @2010

Richard Earl, Class of 1952, was killed in a hunting accident in 1954. He was hunting with friends, pulled his shotgun out of the car barrel first, the trigger caught, and the shotgun discharged. He was shot in the stomach, and apparently died instantly. ~ ~ ~ ~ Richard Corbell Earl was born on May 29, 1934 in Spanish Fork, Utah. His parents were Frank J. Earl and Fern LaVieve Huish Earl [in another place parents are listed as Charles T. Corbell and Dora Coates Corbell]. Richard Corbell Earl died on December 29, 1954 in Malheur, Oregon. Married Roger Stireman. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Jacqueline Fae Engleman Stireman passed away peacefully on August 20, 2008 after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. Jacqueline was born April 7, 1934 in Boise, Idaho to Cecil and Thursa Engelman. She moved with her family to Provo in 1943 where she attended Farrer Junior High, and B.Y. High School, where she graduated in 1952. She was active in Job's Daughters and later became Bethel Guardian of Bethel #15 in Clearfield. In 1958 she married Loren Roger Stireman. Together they have three children and three grandchildren. The family moved to Layton in 1970 where both Jacque and Loren worked at Hill Air Force Base. Jacque retired in 1994 and later became a snowbird, enjoying winters in Mesa, Arizona. Jacque was an avid gardener and enjoyed trailering as well as many hobbies including watercolor painting at which she excelled. She is survived by her husband Roger, daughter Marci (Esparza) of Sandy, son Matthew of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, daughter Mikan (Gosuico) of Sacramento, California, grandchildren Kelsy (Bingham) of Ogden, Utah, Zachary of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Kasey (Gosuico), and sister Celia (Snelson) of Springville, Utah. Class of 1952. Robert H. "Bob" Goodwin. Football, Band, Chorus. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Robert Goodwin. June 27, 1934 ~ June 7, 2023. Born in the middle of the "Great Depression," Bob was seven years old when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He helped his family cope with wartime shortages by tending their "victory garden" and participating in various drives and collections. In 1948, Bob and his parents moved to Provo, Utah, where he graduated from Brigham Young University High School in the Class of 1952. In 1957, he joined the U.S. Air Force, heading to Cadet Flying training, in Florida, and jet training, in Del Rio, Texas. He served 14 years in the Air Force and 11 years in the Nebraska Army National Guard, a member of the 43rd Army Band. He achieved a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He had a lifetime love of flying, music, community theater and spending time with his children and grand-children. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Mary Goodwin; his sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Aucott; and his son, Terry. He is survived by his wife, Edie; sons, Scott (Iren), Yancy (Dorothy), Miles (Janet), Brigg, Carter, Pat (Marie) and Mark (Kara); as well as daughters, Connie McGrath, Erin Serpico, Robin Goodwin and Mandy Cochran. Gibbs. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: On April 17, 2022, a bright and beautiful Easter morning, Irene Hafen Gibbs returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father. She was 88 years old. Irene was born March 1, 1934, to Joseph and Mary Harris Hafen, in Provo, Utah. She was the fifth of eleven children. It was the middle of the Great Depression, and World War II began soon after. The whole country was impoverished and rationing was part of daily life. There were very few modern comforts, and Irene often wanted for more, but her circumstances bred resilience and creativity. She spent her days at school, church, and roaming the neighborhood playing with cousins and friends. She attended Franklin Elementary, Dixon Middle School, Brigham Young High School, Brigham Young University, LDS Business College and, later in life, Weber State University. As a young woman, Irene held numerous jobs, often several at once, including as a telephone operator in Provo, as the recreation director at the Girls MIA Home in Provo Canyon, now Timpanogos Lodge, and as a switchboard operator in Salt Lake City and San Francisco. Eventually she became a seasonal worker at Alta Peruvian Lodge, where she met Edwin Godbe Gibbs. They married June 4, 1960, in Provo Utah, and were sealed in the Logan Utah Temple. Irene and Edwin lived at the Peruvian Lodge for many years, raising children, teaching at the Alf Engen Ski School, and running the lodge. Eventually, they moved their growing family to Lehi, Utah. Irene became the first female EMT to work for the Lehi Ambulance where she proved her worth many times. She became an EMT instructor, and worked for Utah State Emergency Medical Services. She raised her children with freedom and love. Her life was not a peaceful one. Instead it was loud, rambunctious, full of personality and angst, large family gatherings, ice-cream, chop-suey, boating, camp-outs, and a million efforts to keep her kids and husband alive, happy, and wearing shoes. She never did anything the easy way. If something had to be done, she would do it bigger and more fabulous than expected. Eventually, she bravely returned to school and became a Registered Nurse. She worked in several medical arenas, most notably Jordan Valley Hospital ER where, for more than a decade, she cared for traumatized families and individuals, and made many good friends. She has traveled the world by car, plane, and boat. She loved to be near the ocean and hear the waves on the rocks. She loved the mountains, lakes, sunsets and sunrises. Irene has always been intensely devoted to her faith and membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings including Stake Primary Board, Relief Society President, Scout Leader, senior missionary in Little Rock, Arkansas, and for many years as a temple worker. She has constantly sought to strengthen her relationship with Jesus Christ. She was an avid reader and studied the teachings of the prophets every day. Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Godbe Gibbs; her parents, Joseph and Mary Harris Hafen; siblings Joe (Ethel) Hafen, Norma (Weston) Henrie, Louise Stott, Stephen (Cindy) Hafen, Raymond Hafen, and Mary (Eric) Tuttle; and great-grandson, Kazen Black. She is survived by siblings John Mark (Carma) Hafen, Carol (Cecil) Jones, Esther (Jerry) Blackburn, Margaret (Ralph) Rupp; her eight children and their spouses- Dena and Jim Smith, Lauren and Ruthann Gibbs, Edwin and Bonnie Gibbs, Michael and C.J. Edwin was born February 7, 1922 in Salt Lake City to Mary Godbe and Lauren Worthen Gibbs. He married Irene Hafen June 4, 1960 in Provo, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Edwin graduated from East High School and served in the Army during World War II. Following his service Edwin earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Utah and worked in municipal finance, playing a key role in the financing of Lehi's swimming pool. Edwin was well known in the community as someone who would provide legal services to those in need. Edwin was instrumental in a plan that moved surplus military buildings from Brigham City to Little Cottonwood Canyon, thus creating the Alta Peruvian Lodge, his home for over 20 years. His family continues to enjoy the stories of deep powder and steaming swimming pools that were the mainstay of those years. By gathering and photographing snowflakes on a piece of black velvet, Edwin designed the Alta Peruvian Lodge symbol that later became the famous "Alta Snowflake" logo. After selling the lodge in 1970, Edwin moved his family to Lehi, Utah. Edwin loved to play. He was well known for his "bus camper" -- the hamburgers he cooked during ward campouts -- and his soft-serve ice cream machine. Edwin supported his sons in the Boy Scouts by attending and hosting numerous scout trips. He loved skiing (snow and water), boating, bow hunting, fishing, duck hunting, and camping with his family. Edwin is survived by his wife of 44 years, Irene, and eight children, Dena (Jim) Smith of Lehi; Lauren (Ruthann) Gibbs of Murray; Edwin (Bonnie) Gibbs of Round Valley; Michael (Carol) Gibbs of Enoch; Bradley (Kristin) Gibbs of Riverton; Cortney (Lori) Gibbs of Boise, Idaho; Heather (MacKay) Jones of Salt Lake City; Preston Gibbs of Murray; 27 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Class of 1952. Terelle Heisch. Thespians, Beaux Arts Club Vice President, Assistant Librarian. She married _______ Terry. ~ ~ ~ ~ RX EXPRESS -- Terelle Terry -- Sacramento, California. [Published on: November 28, 2004] ~ ~ Terelle Terry has a different moniker for the "RX Express" - she calls it the "Overground Railroad." The appellation, borrowed from the Underground Railroad that helped slaves escape to Canada before the Civil War, fits Terelle's persona: It incorporates both her knowledge of history and her activist inclinations. Terelle, 70, has fought for change all her life. She sees health care reform as one of the major issues facing Californians. She is only too happy to be riding the rails to Canada on a mission that eventually will smash through the wall of greed and corruption that barricades Californians from receiving the health care they need and deserve. Terelle has a personal reason as well for making the journey. She has osteoporosis, and has broken both arms as a result. "Not at the same time, thank goodness," she says. "I want to prevent more breaks. Many people break their hips, which may result in permanent disability, even death." Terelle also is on a fixed income ("It isn't fixed," she says; "it's a shrinking income" because it stays the same while everything else goes up) and has been unable to afford a crucial prescription drug. She hopes to get that medication in Canada, at $53 for a one-month supply. It would cost $100 here. Terelle, an articulate, well-read and humorous woman, comes from a family that has been in California since the gold rush. She took a detour herself to Utah, but came back to the Golden State. She has a B.A. in anthropology from Sacramento State University, and has taught, written for newspapers and magazines, and worked for the Departments of Rehabilitation, Consumer Affairs and Corrections. "I've had a lot of different jobs," she says in an understatement. She retired five years ago. She has three daughters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. If the resume leaves you gasping for air, it becomes all the more surprising when you consider that Terelle contracted polio when she was 12, in 1946. It, and her other ailments, clearly didn't keep her from living a full life, but "it slowed me down a lot," Terelle says. She tires easily, and has a partially paralyzed right leg. Like many people, Terelle would just as soon not take any medications at all, and tries to stay healthy through exercise and diet. But her illnesses finally got to the point where she decided that "I really had to take something." Her doctor prescribed miacalcin. Terelle was ready to partake - until she saw the price tag: $100. "I couldn't afford it," she says. ... Terelle, who has been "guilty of civil disobedience" in the past, participated in demonstrations and is a member of the Grey Panthers, says people must act. "We need to do this," she says. She quotes Savonarola, who said "unless an idea is imbued with action, it doesn't really exist." Californians must come to understand that it is cheaper to extend health care to all than it is to keep the present system, Terelle says. There are numerous steps the government can take, including bulk purchasing of prescription drugs, and not putting up with advertising by pharmaceuticals. "The single biggest benefit would be to stop (them) from advertising," she says. "They're spending billions." "This is inextricably linked with politics," she adds. She says Californians should support legislation... "There has been an assault on the elderly, the poor, the disabled and the middle class," Terelle says, but she adds that it can be turned around. ... California, Terelle notes, is the cutting edge of American culture. The disability movement started here, and resulted in the Americans with Disabilities Act. If California reforms its health care, it may lead the nation to fair health care, not just for the rich, but fair care for all, Terelle believes.

Kent Hendrickson, age 68, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2003, in St. George, Utah. He was born on August 23, 1934, in Payson, Utah, to George Welton Hendrickson and Jean Mendenhall Hendrickson. He married Lorna Anderson, March 3, 1955, in the Manti Utah Temple. Kent's early years were spent in Eureka, Elsinore, Payson, and Provo, Utah. He graduated from BY High School in 1952 and attended Brigham Young University. Most recently, Kent was a small business owner in downtown St. George, Utah. He is survived by his wife and children whom he dearly loved: Bryce Kent (Sandra Johnstone) Hendrickson, Lynne ( Douglas B.) Hendrickson Moore, Mark W. (Holly McArthur) Hendrickson, and Suzette (Andrew G.) Hendrickson McBride. He was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Blaine E. Hendrickson and Boyd W. Born August 9, l934 in Manti, Utah, Norma was the oldest of five children born to wonderful parents, Jerald and Laura Henrie. Her family included a brother, Ray Henrie, and three sisters, Jerry Henrie Simpson, Merilyn Henrie Olsen and she was preceded in death by Frances Henrie. She was educated at Brigham Young High School and LDS Business College, where she excelled in secretarial science. She became a secretary at Fort Douglas where she met and married Nick Rokich. They were married for 35 years and later divorced and remained good friends. They are the proud parents of Gibson and Kandi Rokich and Ron and Nicki Rokich Benoit. Norma was executive secretary at Thiokol, Hercules and director of Project Read at Provo Public Library where she wrote government grants and blessed the lives of many adults, teaching them to read. She met and married Ken Tucker on Aug. 27, l994. They enjoyed music, poetry, nature and just spending time together in their beautiful garden. Norma is best known for her sweetness, acts of kindness, generosity and her perfect poem for every occasion.. She is a member of the LDS Church and wrote beautiful poems about her Heavenly Father, family and nature. Her life-long dream was fulfilled when her book of poetry was published. One of Norma's greatest blessings were her grandchildren: Tasha, Derek, Nicholas, Neil, Torrey, and Madison. Great Grandchildren include: Chancey & Tryloglie. Her death leaves a void in our lives and we will miss her kind and gentle nature, but we are so happy to have her free of pain and to be enjoying the company of her loved ones who have gone before. He served in many specialties including Photography, Aircraft Maintenance, Missile Electronic Maintenance, and Telemetry Analysis of ICBM test launches. He spent time in Japan, England, Korea and many locations around the United States. Ended his career at Vandenberg AFB, California. He retired as a CMSGT on December 1, 1980. He went to work for Martin Marietta at Vandenberg AFB in September 1980, doing assembly, test and launching of Peacekeeper ICBMs and Titan Booster rockets, putting recon satellites into orbit. He retired from Lockheed Martin Aerospace on January 31, 1998. His eternal companion, Mary Sue Nance, passed away from cancer after 45+ years on May 31, 2000. He later married Kay Ann Bowers on February 17, 2001. They served as Temple ordinance workers at the Los Angeles Temple and the Provo Temple for almost four years. They served a Church Service Mission from May 2005 to Nov 2006 in the Los Angeles California Mission, in the Los Angeles Regional Family History Center. Bill, son of William W. Houghton and Donna A. Mickelson, was born in Eureka, Utah, on June 28, 1934. He graduated from Brigham Young High School, Provo, Utah in the Class of 1952. He enlisted in the US Air Force on March 3, 1953. He served 28 honorable years and retired as a CMSGT at Vandenberg AFB in California. During his military career, he performed in numerous fields including Photography, Aircraft Maintenance, and Electronic Maintenance on the country's ICBM Missile Force. They went on a Church Family History mission in Los Angeles, California from May 2005 to November 2006. His love of family history research was well-known throughout his adult life. Clifford passed away on May 13, 2023, with Cosette, his sweetheart of over 71 years, by his side. It was at B.Y. High that they met and fell in love. Together they shared a High School story book romance, and were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on August 15, 1951. Cliff and Cosy were blessed with 5 children, 20 grandchildren, and 40 great grandchildren.

She was born October 19, 1933 to Shadrach Cannon Jones and Ella Montez Harris in Provo, Utah. She was the 6th of 6 children. Cannon, Montez, Robert, Jim, and a twin sister that was stillborn. Mom attended Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1952. Her best friend growing up was Diane Smith who lived across the street. Mom was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In High School, she participated in different singing activities and carried her singing on into her later life, until she had kids and realized she was the only one with that talent. After high school, she worked at different National Parks then landed at the Hotel Escalante in their accounting department and at the front desk. There, she became roommates and life-long friends with Annette Bauer. While both were working there, Donna and Cluff Jolley lined them up with two upstanding Cedar City men who became their husbands. Mom married Robert Francis Middleton on February 2, 1957 and started her farm life. She had grown up in the city so it was new to her. After living in town for a few years, they moved to Hamilton Fort so Dad could just walk across the street to work. Mom adapted well, feeding doggies, washing tons of vegetables every summer night and washing whatever off of the blue, brown and green chicken eggs. Before moving to the farm, she grew her family, Diane, David, and Michael who only lived 4 months. She was a great mom and took care of her family. We were always her first priority. For fun, Mom was in a bridge club with the same ladies for about 24 years. She was active in the Lady Elks and the Lady Woolgrowers. She was the mom that took my friends on trips before we became independent because she was fun. She taught me to love Soap Operas and how to make cookies. She never missed any sporting event David was in, scorekeeping in Little League and cheering him on through high school. She was an awesome grandma to all 7 of her grandkids, tending, shopping, watching them do their thing. If any of them were at all sarcastic, they got it from her. They all love her and will miss their chats with her. They are Danielle, Joe (Chezlie), Kade (Maddie), Rand (Tracy), Nathan (Candice), Amanda (Tyler), and Jeff (Tayler). She also has 20 great grandchildren. Many of them have fun memories of Grand Jo or the Old Old Grandma. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, all of her siblings and their spouses and her son Michael. She is also preceded in death by many dear friends that will be waiting for her. She is now professor of Mathematics & Computer Science at Santa Clara University. @2006 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Jean Pedersen passed away on January 1, 2016, at the age of 81. She was a professor at Santa Clara University until her retirement, and she was a member of the MAA for 49 years. Pedersen was known for her research, writing and speaking on polyhedral geometry, combinatorics, and number theory, and with Peter Hilton, Pedersen co-authored A Mathematical Tapestry: Demonstrating the Beautiful Unity of Mathematics. For the MAA, she served on the Spectrum editorial board, and she was awarded the Golden Section’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1997. Jean was a popular professor and the author of 214 research papers, reviews and pedagogical works, 13 books, 3 translations, and 8 videos. She touched many lives, as I heard at her funeral from her departmental colleagues and from present students and alumni. As a member of our Santa Clara family, we remember her with deep appreciation. .... It is with sadness that I announce the death of longtime math professor Jean Pedersen, who died on January 1 with her family by her side. Our hearts go out to Professor Pedersen's children, Jenni and Chris, for such a loss, and one so soon after their father's passing. Professor Pedersen was a true pillar of the University and of its math department. Known for her kindness in welcoming newcomers to the University and her collegiality among her fellow faculty, she had a great love for Santa Clara University and a passion for teaching math. Professor Pedersen began her teaching career at Santa Clara in 1966 when she became the first woman to teach mathematics here. She later became the first woman to be granted tenure in the Mathematics Department. A published author, guest lecturer for numerous professional programs and associations, and generous member of the University community, she modeled the best of the teaching scholar. Santa Clara University has lost a leading light in Professor Pedersen, and while we mourn her loss, we remember the great gift of her life. .... Jean J. Pedersen, a long-time professor of mathematics at Santa Clara, died on New Year’s Day 2016 in a Los Gatos hospital after a long series of medical problems. She was born into a family in Provo, Utah; her father was an ophthalmologist, her mother a teacher. She had a younger brother who became an architect in Seattle, and a son and daughter, Chris a Silicon Valley engineer and Jennifer, who teaches mathematics at Utah Valley University in Orem. She had six grandchildren. Jean attended college at Brigham Young University where, given the culture of that time, she majored initially in home economics, only later discovering the beauty of mathematics. So thus motivated when she moved to the University of Utah at Salt Lake City for graduate study, she switched to mathematics. Ultimately she wrote a thesis on algebra under the direction of E. Allen Davis, a well-known mathematician at the University. There she had as a student in one of her classes, an engineering major, Kent Pedersen, whom she later married. Soon after their marriage and Kent’s accepting a position at IBM, they moved to San Jose where they remained. Kent died roughly one year before Jean’s death. After starting a family, Jean joined the Santa Clara University mathematics faculty initially teaching only part-time. Proving herself to be such a spectacularly good teacher, she was transferred to being full-time and eventually to the rank of full professor by 1996. Under the guidance of the legendary mathematician and teacher, George Polya, at Stanford University and later a long series of collaborations with the internationally known British topologist, Peter J. Hilton, Jean performed mathematical research, writing and speaking on polyhedral geometry, combinatorics,and number theory. Hilton had held positions at Oxford, Cambridge, Case Western Reserve, and Cornell, and had been one of the mathematicians that cracked the enigma code at Bletchley Park, led by Alan Turing. Pedersen’s list of publications runs to 214 research papers, reviews and pedagogical works, 13 books, 3 translations, and 8 videotapes. Others await publication. She was eventually to become an Erskine Fellow at the University of Christ Church in New Zealand, a repeated visitor at the University of Capetown in South Africa, and a repeated short-term visitor at the Forschungs Institut für Mathematikc at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule/Zurich. A populist lecturer, Jean was often asked to speak at meetings from departmental colloquia to regional meetings to international congresses. These talks spread from the Bay Area to Australia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Kuala Lumpur, Delft, Haifa, and many other locations. These presentations often led to collaborators in mathematics (Glenn Appleby, Astrid Bonning, James H. Foster, Walter Gross, Michael Hendy, Bruce Love, Larry Somer, Jurgen Stigter, Tibor Tarnai, Byron Walden, Hans Walser, Tamsen Whitehead); in mathematics education (Franz O. Armbruster, Diane Mendence, E. Allen Davis, Derek Holton, George Polya, Peter Ross, Martin Gardner); general mathematics (Youseff Alavi, Ronald Graham) and algebra (Tibor Tarnai, Carlos Sequin). Jean was a member of numerous MAA and Association of Women in Mathematics, was a one-time member of the Editorial Board of Mathematics Magazine, and was a pioneer director of a “Women and Mathematics” lecture series to attract women into mathematics majors. She was the advisor of our own chapter of AWM. Jean always gave people the impression that being on the mathematics faculty, as teacher, advisor, and friend, was a profession that is just as good as it gets. Ellen Elaine Keeler Thompson, age 84, of Orem, graduated from life and joined her sweetheart of 60 years on Saturday, December 8, 2018. Ellen was born on May 1, 1934, in Provo, Utah, to Daniel M. and Virginia Christensen Keeler. She grew up in Provo, as a member of a close and loving family. Ellen’s parents were her adored mentors, and her siblings were her dear friends and greatest cheerleaders throughout her life. Ellen graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1952. She attended BYU, enjoying academics, performing with and directing the Cougarettes, and participating in student government. She served as student body vice president during her senior year. After graduation Ellen worked for NBC in New York City, where she met her sweetheart, Ivan Barry Thompson. They were sealed in the Manti Temple on 3 January 1958. Over the years, she and Barry made their home in New York City, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Tulsa and Orem. Ellen took her stewardships as a wife and a mother of eight children as her top priorities in life. Music was one of Ellen’s greatest joys from childhood until her last days. She performed in choirs and small groups, wrote music, and directed choirs. She was a talented writer, authoring a plethora of poems, scripts, church programs, and family history pieces. She will be remembered for the countless notes, letters and cards that she wrote to encourage friends and family members. Family history and temple work were lifetime passions. Ellen’s greatest attribute was her compassion for those in need, and desire to reach out in friendliness and kindness to people wherever she went. She collected friends everywhere she lived and served, and worked to keep those connections over the years. She was a joyful minister to those who struggled. Ellen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her many church callings focused on music, the Relief Society, and various teaching assignments. She embraced her role as a visiting teacher. With her sweetheart she served as a temple ordinance worker, an MTC service missionary, and a family history consultant. She enjoyed their time working with the BYU Asian Ward. Ellen and Barry served two service missions together--in La Paz, Bolivia and Toronto, Canada. Ellen is survived by her eight children: Douglas (Michele), Kathleen (Todd Skinner), Bradford (Tami), Ginny (Scott Smith), David (Karin), Jonathan (Keeko), Margaret (Steve Willis), and Martha (Michael Johnson); twenty-four grandchildren, almost nine great-grandchildren. His parents were Warren Edgar Losee and Mary Permalia Hatch Losee. Bud Losee died on January 5, 2001 in Provo, Utah, at the age of 66. ~ ~ ~ ~ His father graduated from BYU in 1910. Sterling was born November 26, 1934 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Harold “King” Loveland and Jessie Fern McGavin. Sterling was the youngest of their four boys, His older brothers were: Jerry, Dick, and Emerson. He spent his growing-up years in Idaho Falls, Ogden, Logan, and Provo, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1952. He attended Brigham Young University and graduated with a degree in Accounting in 1960. He served a two-and-a-half-year LDS mission to New Zealand, which was one of the highlights of his life. He loved telling, and we loved hearing, the stories of his mission with a few Maori words thrown in for good measure. After his mission, while attending BYU, he met his future wife, Joyce Bullock, on a blind date. They were married on August 14, 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had five children: Sue Ann, David, Lisa, John and Rebekah. They lived in Provo, Brigham City, Price and Orem, Utah during the next 26 years, with a few years spent in Orange County California as well. Sterling worked at a variety jobs during his career. They ranged from accountant, dairy farmer, insurance sales, city recorder, nursing home administrator, owner and head baker of Loveland Bread, to bus driver and transportation manager. After Joyce’s death in 1987, Sterling met and married Shasta Shipp Hamilton. They were married June 17, 1988. Sterling became a step-dad to Shasta’s three grown children: DaNett, Kurt, and Dana. During their marriage they moved to Glendale, Arizona where they opened and operated Loveland Bread for several years. Shasta passed away on December 31, 2003. After Shasta’s death, Sterling purchased a motor home and enjoyed spending time with the kids and grandkids going on several road trips. In 2012 Sterling moved back to Utah to be closer to his family. He enjoyed living at West Jordan Senior Housing where he made many new friends. After a fall in February 2016, he spent several months in rehab care where he was a staff and resident favorite. He moved to Sunridge Assisted Living in November of 2016. He loved living at Sunridge and celebrated his 82nd birthday there in November with family and friends. Sterling was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony. He served in many church callings during his life. He especially enjoyed the time he served as scoutmaster and the years he served as stake clerk. He was a great sacrament meeting speaker and used very few notes. His favorite church calling was when he and Shasta served as nursery leaders for many years. Sterling was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce, his wife Shasta, his brothers Jerry and Dick, and his daughter-in-law Jan Loveland. He is survived by his children: Sue Ann (Bryce) Bodily, David (Arva) Loveland, Lisa (Paul) Hammer, John (Dustie) Loveland, Rebekah (Dan) Ames as well as daughter-in-law Melanie Loveland. He is also survived by his brother Emerson (Helen) Loveland, step children DaNett Coy, Kurt (Connie) Coy, and Dana (Roger) Eusebio. He leaves behind 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. His family is grateful for the loving care he received from the staff at Sunridge Assisted Living and Cornerstone Hospice during his illness. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 30, 2017, at the LDS chapel located at 4825 W. 7000 S. West Jordan, UT 84084. Interment, Roy City Cemetery. Source.
