Virginia and Jack Fenswick

Class of 1957. Virginia Luke. Debate Region, Radio Speaking, Childrens Theater, Pep Club, Notre Maison President, Thespians, Chorus, Model U.N. She married Jack Fenswick. ~ ~ ~ ~ Virginia Beth Luke was born on October 22, 1939 in Anchorage, Alaska. Her parents were Theron Howard Luke and Zelda Louise Morley Luke. She died on March 16, 1994 in Seattle, Washington. ~ ~ ~ ~ A TRIBUTE: Virginia Beth Luke Fenswick, born on October 22, 1939, and died on March 16, 1994. Virginia was born in Anchorage, Alaska, where her parents had gone on an adventure (there were no jobs to be had in Utah in the mid-1930’s). Upon returning to Utah, the family settled in Provo, where Virginia attended Joaquin Elementary School (now a school of the past), Farrer Junior High School, and then spent three happy years at BY High School, graduating in 1957. There she was an enthusiastic member of several clubs and was known as a good friend to many of her classmates. Eventually, she made her way to Seattle, Washington where she found a place that spoke to her soul. She was one of the first non-native women to fish the waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska, known as “the place where the sea breaks its back”. She fished as a gill-netter alongside her husband, Jack Fenswick, with whom she raised three children and two step-children. As her children grew, her home was always open to their friends who might be in need of a welcoming haven. One young man in particular stayed on and remains a member of the family to this day. She eventually put herself through college, graduating cum laude with a degree in accounting, then took a job with one of the “big eight” accounting firms in the country, then known as Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell. During this time she was also passionately active in the movement for women’s rights, and worked in many advocacy groups for women. The greatest gift she gave her children was the passing on of her own love of adventure. Her sons and daughters learned from her to value life experiences above material things. They fondly recall everything from picnics and camping excursions, to exploring the pyramids of Mexico, and the temples of Japan, with their mother, Virginia. Her laughter and love of life live on in the memories of her family. [Written in memory of Virginia, by her sister, Barbara Luke, in February 2007]

Married to Dr. Earl K. Despite the heavy hand of time affecting his body, he remained dedicated to his family and a faithful servant of the Lord. Earl was born on March 17, 1939 in Provo, to Orrin Henry Jackson and Rilla Jacobson. He attended the Provo City Public Schools and graduated from BY High School in the Class of 1957. He was awarded a BYU scholarship and graduated with a degree in Botany. During his time at BYU, he also dedicated two-and-a-half years to serve an honorable mission in Helsinki, Finland. Earl then married his high school sweetheart, Linda Mae Nielsen, also BYH Class of 1957, on June 7, 1962 in the Salt Lake Temple. He and Linda were blessed with four children. While raising a family, Earl continued his education with a three-year NASA Fellowship studying Plant Physiology at Oregon State University, earning him a Ph.D. Degree and completed a two-year Post-Doctorate at the E. I. DuPont Co. He traveled internationally over the next six years of work, then developed and patented agricultural products. He published several scientific papers and was the first Ph.D. regional extension agent in Utah. In semi-retirement, Earl and Linda returned to Utah. Earl worked for Utah State University in the Salt Lake Extension office. He was a successful research scientist and professor at USU; BYU’s Salt Lake Center needed an experienced biology professor as well, and Earl gladly accepted the position. He was granted a three-year water conservation program for Utah. Teaching and being a professor, though, was by far his favorite job. Earl was grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ and His atonement. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life. He loved serving the Savior and the Church, and served valiantly in every calling which included two bishoprics, two high councils, stake Sunday school president, and his favorite, gospel doctrine teacher. Earl had a great love for horses and the out-of-doors that he shared with his family. He will be missed every day, but his family is grateful he has exchanged his earthly burdens for his heavenly home. His family is eternally blessed to have a faithful Patriarch that loved them and set a stalwart example of following the Lord and relying on His atonement. Earl is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Robert E. (Kris) of Orem, Utah, Jeffrey L. (Susan) of Medina, Ohio, and Richard O. (Julie) of Issaquah, Washington; daughter, Susan R, (Mario) Gonzales of Provo, Utah; brothers, Russell H. (Connie) of Tigard, Oregon and Byron R. (Nancy) of Peoria, Arizona; sister, Anne (Bill) Slater of Lake Stevens, Washington; along with 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Oak Hills Stake Center located at 925 North Temple Drive, Provo, Utah. Attended school at Joaquin Elementary, Farrer Jr. High, BYU High School, and Brigham Young University. Delivered newspapers for the Provo Daily Herald from age 10 to 15. At fifteen went to work for his Uncle LaVon on his farm in Benjamin, Utah. In addition to the farm, he worked for State Farm Insurance Company and was gone a good deal of the time. He taught Shermin to plow with a tractor and with a work horse. Shermin planted seed, dug ditches, built and mended fences, and irrigated. He helped train his horses. In general he did all of the things necessary for operating the farm. He learned to enjoy farm work, especially when he got to ride horses. He lived at his uncles's farm in a small cabin and grew to love LaVon and Addie as they treated him like he was part of their family. Shermin worked for him for three years. At sixteen he began dating DeAnn Goode. They dated for about one and a half years until she graduated. Shermin asked her to marry him on the day of her graduation. They were married the following July 18, 1958. Shermin had a large strawberry birth mark on his left cheek. He didn't mind, but his mother shed tears over it often. In 1980, while serving a mission as a tour guide on Temple Square, a lady doctor saw his birth mark. She suggested that he come to San Francisco, where she could remove it with laser surgery. He still didn't care about it. "It was me and that's all there was to it." Then she told him that it would likely become cancerous sometime after he turned 50 years old. He thought about it for a few weeks, then heard that the University of Utah Hospital was doing laser surgery. He inquired and the arrangements were made; they were able to remove about 90 percent of it. Shermin and DeAnn were married and sealed in the Manti Temple. They had nine children (seven sons and two daughters). They are: Jeffery Duane, Brian David, Teresa Lynn, Craig Anthony, Mark Andrew, Alan Shermin, Daniel Lance, Kevin Spencer and KristiAnn. All of the boys have served missions. The family has lived in Provo, Moab, Murray, Orem, American Fork and Lehi. In 1981, DeAnn became ill with cancer. Five years later, the doctors have declared that DeAnn is officially cured. In 1970, Shermin was in a serious accident North of American Fork on the Alpine highway. He still has serious side effects from that accident. Before taking medical retirement in 1992, Shermin worked as Marketing Director and Business Manager for Zions Securities with major responsibilities in Hawaii. He also served as assistant to the President. Interment, American Fork Cemetery. OBITUARY FOR WIFE: DeAnn Goode Payne, age 63, passed away on January 9, 2004 after many years of valiantly battling cancer. She was born October 29, 1940 in American Fork to Ferrin M. and Florence Jensen Goode. She married Shermin D. Payne in the Manti LDS Temple on July 18, 1958. The Cowboy and the Cheerleader. He came to BY High School from a southern Utah ranch. Blue eyes and a cowboy hat. She was a cheerleader, leaping and thumping, hollering a cheer familiar in those days, "Hold that line." Over in 250A he did not glide out on the dance floor, where Gordon Bullock dipped amazingly. In College Hall when the lights shone on the stage, our cowboy didn't stride out there. He was the one up in the rafters making the lights work. She did notice that downstairs by the rattling lockers he was the one making others laugh. And he was awfully handsome. Maybe he could be taught to dance, she thought. He fetched her for the prom in a pickup truck, bringing a sagebrush corsage. That summer he sent a letter from his ranch, enclosing a horny toad. They went camping, and he made fire out of rocks. He could fix anything with his strong hands, hands that were gentle when they touched. But she was a proud sixteen. No man touched her lips. Then one night in a bus station in Monticello, under his desert stars, the cowboy kissed her with his soft lips. It meant forever, although they didn't know that then. They went their diverse ways, the cheerleader cartwheeling off to a life in the East, the cowboy riding back to his red rock ranch. For twenty-two years they did not meet. She had long given up cheerleading, seeing her BY High days as dust. The school buildings crumbled, glass in shards, gone to the dogs. Then something happened. Brave souls wouldn't allow such a death, willing to be chained in front of a bulldozer first. And the cowboy went to find the cheerleader. She was there. Who was this gentleman in cowboy boots? But the blue eyes. The smile. It was that sexy cowboy. A friend from long ago. They now live up the street from Academy Square, with its polished windows, Internet hookups, a world of cyberspace unimaginable once. Yet the same walls stand. The red roof is restored. And the beehive out front surely remembers students gathering there, a cheerleader swinging her legs from the edge, eating a cone from University Dairy, noticing the boy from southern Utah, thinking he would be nice to know.
