She was born June 23, 1928, in Many, Louisiana, to Julius Andrew and Mary Barksdale Raiford. Louisiana was her home until she married Robert James Howell August 16, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and over the years she held many positions in the various wards she attended, including the Park Ward and the Oak Hills 3rd Ward of Provo. She also served for many years in the Provo and St. George temples and loved the service. Mary was orphaned as a child and lived with various relatives. She secured her first job when she was 13 years old at a five-and-dime store in Monroe, Louisiana. She worked all through high school, saving her money so she could take piano lessons and attend Brigham Young University. She met her husband, Bob, in Louisiana where he was serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. They married and ultimately settled in Provo, where she did attend BYU, earning a bachelors degree in education and a masters degree in special education. She taught special education before retiring. She quietly served others while raising her family. All who knew her remember her as a warm, generous friend who loved her neighbors. She served as a matter of life, of routine, without fanfare. Mary had a special affection for animals, and over the years she shared her life with many pets, including Pepsi, Suzy, Mitzi, Muffin, Misty, and Missy. She was witty and intelligent and loved to sing and play the piano. She loved beautiful things: flowers, art, colors. Mary is survived by her husband, Bob, and three children, Carol Gould, Peggy Webbe and Bruce Howell. She is grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by all her siblings. The family extends their gratitude to those who have cared so kindly for their wife and mother at Courtyard at Jamestown in Provo where she resided. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel at 3030 Mojave Lane, Provo, Utah. A viewing and gathering of family and friends will begin at 9:45 a.m. that morning. Interment will take place following the funeral services at East Lawn Memorial Hills. Condolences may be sent to info@bergmortuary.com [Provo Daily Herald, May 24, 2007.]
