Class of 1932.

Our chief source for the 1932 graduation list is an article in the Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, published on Wednesday, June 1, 1932. The sub-headline says, "36 Students to Get Diplomas At Exercises", but only 35 names are listed. Nevertheless, this appears to be a fairly complete list. The 36th diploma may have been that issued to J. J. Keeler, who was a member of the Class of 1931 who did not receive his diploma until 1932, according to Keeler family lore. Another candidate for the missing classmate 36 is Argene Vance.

Class of 1932. Anne Bonnett [Ann]. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, June 2, 1932. Their children included: Robert Oaks [BYH Class of 1954] (married Gloria Mae Unger [also BYH Class of 1954]); Richard Oaks [BYH Class of 1960] (married Kathy); Beverly Ann Oaks [BYH Class of 1964] (married Del) Jensen; and Bonnie Oaks (married Ty) Ripple. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Ann Bonnett Oaks, 94, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2007, in her home. She was born February 18, 1913, in Provo, Utah to George E. Bonnett and Harriett Laycock Bonnett. She attended B.Y. Training School, and graduated from B.Y. High School in 1932. She then graduated from Brigham Young University. She married Charles E. Oaks on May 18, 1934. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Provo together for 68 years. Mother was a mom, a homemaker and an outstanding cook. Later in life she worked in the school lunch program and at the BYU Bookstore. She loved being with her family and found great satisfaction serving them. She was proud of her four children, her 14 grandchildren and her 27 great- grandchildren and their spouses. She loved working in the yard, cultivating her beautiful roses. She lived a full, rich life in good health. Ann is survived by her two daughters, Beverly Ann Jensen and Bonnie (Ty) Ripple, two sons, Robert (Gloria) and Richard (Kathy), her grandchildren and a sister, Lorna Bonnett Vider [BYH Class of 1940]. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, and a grandson. His parents were J. Leo Bown and Emma Newell Bown. Myron S. Bown died on August 2, 1971 in Salt Lake City, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS WIFE'S OBITUARY: Ferl Nielson Bown passed away July 20, 2003, in Midway City, California. She was born November 9, 1915, to Loren Andrew Nielson and Harriet Eloise Johnson in Mapleton, Utah. She was born the fifth of nine children and the first of three girls. She married Myron Smoot Bown on July 13, 1939. He died August 2, 1971. She lived in Mapleton, Utah; Springville, Utah; Milford, Utah; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Midway City, California. She is survived by her children, David Myron Bown (Joli), Salt Lake City; Emma Jo Edwards, Midway City, California; and Gregory Loren Bown (Margaret), Salt Lake City; also by six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was born in Provo on July 19, 1914. His parents were Wells Lovett Brimhall & Fern Smoot Brimhall. He attended the BYU Training School, graduating from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1932, and then he graduated from Brigham Young University in 1935. He spent two years studying at Columbia University in New York City and two years of graduate work at Stanford University, where he received the MBA degree. He married Viva Maurine Jones, from Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1935. They were married in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. During their married years they lived in Utah, California, New York and Illinois. They had 5 children. Smoot served two years in the military service during World War II. Then he and his family settled in Provo where Smoot was active in business and civic affairs. Smoot joined with Phil Knight to open and operate Knights Men's Shop on University Ave for 20 years. He served terms on the Provo City Commission, Provo City Council, and was a Director of State Bank of Provo, becoming President of the Bank before it merged with the Springville Banking Company and the name changed to Central Bank & Trust Company. He was a member of the High Council of the first LDS Stake on the BYU Campus. He was appointed to the office of Utah State Bank Commissioner (the name of the office later changed to Commissioner of Financial Institutions) by Governor Calvin L. Rampton. He served in that office for 13 years before retiring in 1988, after which he spent several years with Tracy Collins Bank & Trust Company in Salt Lake, serving as Consultant to the Chairman. Smoot was an Eagle Scout and supported the Boy Scout program throughout his life. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club in Provo and also in Salt Lake City. He and Maurine were both active in support of their son George, and his associates, in the building of family recreation parks and other business activities in California and Arizona. He and Maurine moved back to Utah Valley in 1988 and lived there during the summers and in Phoenix, Arizona, during the winters. Maurine passed away in 2001. Smoot married Helena Call Jacobsen on August 8, 2002, in Jackson Wyoming. They have traveled together, supported each other's children and enjoyed a very special relationship together for the past 8 years. He was pre-deceased by his wife Maurine, his sister, Sina B. Stevenson and his son, Wells Lorin Brimhall. He is survived by his wife, Helena, brother Victor O. Brimhall, daughters Janelle Brimhall (Peter) Lysenko and Bonnie Brimhall (Dick) Kofford, his daughter-in-law Sue (Wells, deceased) Brimhall, and sons Stephen (Mary Jo) Brimhall and George (Brenda) Brimhall; Helena's daughters Jeri (John) Snow, Betty Lynne (Ernie) Middleton, and Barbara (Kevin, deceased) Sondrup; 23 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Condolences may be sent to the family through www.bergmortuary.com [Provo Daily Herald, Sunday, March 13, 2011] ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY OF HIS FIRST SPOUSE: Viva Maurine (Maurine) Jones Brimhall, civic and church leader, born February 10, 1915, in Provo, Utah to Ivie H. and Lorin F. Jones, died in her Orem home, Saturday, May 5, 2001. Maurine was the eldest and last surviving of four children: Ray L. Jones, Mae La Vieve Sudweeks, and William Elbert Jones. Her family moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1920, and it is in that environment that she grew up, attending Las Vegas public schools and New Mexico Normal University. To help with college expenses, Maurine designed and made Chimayo Indian Sport Coats for Charles Ilfield Company. To further her education, Maurine attended BYU in 1932, graduating in 1935. She married Wells Smoot Brimhall September 9, 1935 in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah and moved to New York City where her husband attended Columbia College. She worked at Teachers College, a subsidiary of Columbia University. Maurine was active in civic affairs with the PTA, The Lady Kiwanians and the 4-H Clubs (she started the first 4-H club in Provo, and at a younger age, won trips to Chicago and Washington, D. C.). She developed a city-wide bicycle safety program for Provo school children and won 2nd place in the nation, receiving the award at a National Safety Conference in Chicago. She represented Utah at a National Convention on Children and Youth in Washington D. C. (1960) and at a National Safety Conference in San Francisco. She was appointed by Utah's Governor to serve on a 12-member committee on children and youth. Maurine had a talented gift for music, playing the piano and marimba, and also producing many delightful compositions as a special occasion song writer for family, community and church affairs. During the late 1930's and early 1940's schooling and employment took Maurine and Smoot from Utah to California to New York to Illinois and back again to Provo. There she brought up her family until 1965 when she moved to Salt Lake City, living there for about 20 years before returning to Utah Valley. Some of the highlights of her civic activities in Salt Lake include the Director for ladies lunch programs at the national conventions of The Conference of State Bank Supervisors. She was the founder and director of the Utah Citizens for Decency, working with the national organizations (Morality in Media, C. D. L., The American Family Association and the LDS Church) in her crusade against pornography. Her organization was influential in the passage of strong anti-pornography laws in Utah and other states. Maurine was active in and was a financial supporter of her sons' Family Entertainment Centers and building activities in California, Arizona, and Florida. She moved to Orem in 1988, spending summers there and winters with her children who live in Phoenix, Arizona. She has been an active and life-long member and supporter of the LDS Church and has been prominent among the crusaders for the preservation and restoration of Academy Square in Provo. Maurine is survived by her husband, Wells Smoot Brimhall and by four of her five children: Janelle Brimhall [BYH Class of 1955; BYAF] (Peter) Lysenko, Provo, Utah; Stephen (Mary Jo) Brimhall, Menlo Park, California; George (Brenda) Brimhall, Paradise Valley, Arizona; Bonnie Brimhall (Dick) Kofford, Orem, Utah; Wells L. (Susan) Brimhall (deceased), Phoenix, Arizona. Maurine is also the proud and loving grandmother of 23 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. According to his obituary, Webster Decker served as BYH Student Body President, 1931-1932. In 1930-1931, he had served as Debate Manager. He played a forward on the basketball team. He had a part in the annual BYH play, "The Youngest", presented in College Hall on December 12, 1930. He was a cast member in "Little Women" during the 1928-1929 school year. Decker, husband, father, grandfather, university professor and accountant, died October 20, 1999 in Mesquite, Nevada, where he had retired after living most of his life in Salt Lake City. Webster was born September 29, 1914 in Bluff, Utah, the third child of James Bean and Pearl Adams Decker. He attended public schools in Utah and Colorado, and graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo in 1932, where he was Student Body President. Webster spent part of his youth on a family ranch in Colorado, and he retained the skills and attitudes of a cowboy. He graduated from Brigham Young University where he was active in student affairs and selected as Most Representative Student his senior year. He received a Masters in Business Administration from New York University. Webster married Moreho Allred in 1937, in the Salt Lake Temple. They had five children, and the marriage ended in divorce after 36 years. He married Mary Conely DeMar in 1973 and helped raise her four children. He leaves his widow, Mary; children, Rod, Craig, James Weston, Jeanne and Marci; stepchildren, Suzanne, Renee, Teena and Bill; brother, Craig; and sisters, Helen and Toni. Web has 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild by his children, and nine grandchildren from his stepchildren. Webster was a professor of accounting at the University of Utah for 36 years. He taught introduction to accounting, management and tax accounting. In addition, he practiced as a certified public accountant for 48 years. He wrote a textbook, was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and taught in the Air Force MBA programs in England, Germany and Spain. Webster lived zestfully. He built a big cabin on Hebgen Lake in Montana, a home on "Decker Hill" in Bunkerville, Nevada, cooked at barbecues, hunted and fished, raised and rode horses, read avidly, sang in a fine tenor voice, danced gracefully, played chess, bridge and poker, laughed frequently and distinctively, and enjoyed company. In his final years he suffered from Parkinson's disease. He died with his family around him. Funeral services were held in Bunkerville, NV. He played a forward on the basketball team during the 1930-31 season. ~ ~ ~ ~ Thomas Hull Eastmond's parents were Elbert Hindley Eastmond and Margaret Craig Hull Eastmond, married April 2, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had at least two children: Thomas Hull Eastmond, born March 12, 1914 in Provo, Utah [BYH Class of 1932]; and Elbert John (Jack) Eastmond, Sr., born July 6, 1915 in San Francisco, CA [BYH Class of 1933]. ~ ~ ~ ~ Thomas Hull Eastmond married _______ Powelson, daughter of Ellis Bertrand Powelson and Ruth Robey Alexander. He died on December 13, 1967 at age 53 in Burbank, California. Interment, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Los Angeles, California.

Class of 1932 ~ Honorary. Blaine Facer. OBITUARY: Blaine Harding Facer died on January 8, 2004. Blaine was born March 10, 1915 in Ogden, Utah to William O. and Olive Harding Facer. He was the second of four children. His parents; a sister, Alice Facer Seiter; and a son, David Morrison Facer, preceded him in death. He attended BY High School and Provo High School, and graduated [from PHS] in 1932. He married Carol Morrison on August 1, 1938. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. In 2000, they moved to St. George, Utah, to be closer to family. Blaine was employed at the Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company, and later moved on to Geneva Steel. He settled on a career as a cement contractor, which he did for 45 years. He was a member of the LDS Church and served as a Sunday School and Special Interest Teacher. He lived in Rivergrove 2nd Ward for almost 50 years. He had many interests. He loved the outdoors, and in addition to his building skills, he refinished antique furniture as a hobby. He had a great appreciation for history, and loved to talk about it. Blaine is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol, St. George, Utah; son Brent, Washington, Utah; sister, Ruth Andrus of Spanish Fork, Utah; brother, Mack of Sparks, Nevada; six grandchildren and three great-grand-children. ~ ~ ~ ~ His parents: William O. Facer and Olive Harding Facer. Their children included: Alice Facer Seiter; Blaine Harding Facer [BYH Class of 1932] (Carol), , St. George, Utah; Ruth Facer [BYH Class of 1938] (Ralph) Andrus, of Spanish Fork, Utah; and Mack Facer [BYH Class of 1943] of Sparks, Nevada.

Class of 1932 ~ Honorary. Dick Grimmett played on the BYH Basketball squad in 1930 and 1931. He played his senior year for Moreland High School in Idaho, where he was named All-State Forward. In 1933 he joined the BYU Varsity Basketball Team. ~ ~ ~ ~ Richard G. Grimmett was born January 6, 1913. His parents are Hyrum H. Grimmett and Hannah S Grimmett of Idaho. He died on February 3, 2003 in Utah at the age of 90.

Class of 1932. Roy Eastmond. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, June 2, 1932. He, along with Darlene Owens, delivered the class prognostication. Hammond, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 in Provo, Utah. He was born September 30, 1914 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Clyde Asbury Hammond and Eliza "May" Christensen Hammond. Roy graduated from BYU High School in 1932, and from Brigham Young University in 1936, at which time he traveled to Washington D.C. to begin medical school. He took time out to return to Utah to marry his long-time sweetheart, Anita Smoot, the granddaughter of Senator/Apostle Reed Smoot, and the great-granddaughter of Abraham O. Smoot. She was a graduate of BY High School in the Class of 1933. She also graduated from BYU. Roy Hammond went on to graduate with honors from George Washington Medical School in 1940, receiving the William A. Davis Scholarship award. After returning to Provo, his first son, Roy Alan, was born in 1941. Roy then served in the U.S. Army Air Force for four years during WWII as a flight surgeon, three of which were in New Guinea, where he attained the rank of Major. After returning home, he established his medical practice in Provo and had three more children: Kristine, Richard and Robert. Dr. Hammond's tenure as a physician in Provo has spanned over 50 years, during which time he delivered more than 8,000 babies. The sensitivity and compassion he demonstrated in caring for his patients resulted in a valley full of friends, whose loyalty to him was legendary. During his professional career, he was involved with the Utah Valley "double blind" study in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania which lead to the discovery of the polio virus, and ultimately the Salk vaccine. He is a past president of the Utah County Medical Society and of the Utah Valley Hospital Staff, and was the Medical Advisor to the Utah County Draft Board for twenty-eight years, a member of the Utah County Board of Health, and the area surgeon for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1966 until his retirement. He has continuously served on the Board of Directors of Central Bank since 1963, and was honored by the BYU Emeritus Club in 1994 for his outstanding life-time contributions to his community. Roy was instrumental in the formation and construction of Riverside Country Club, served as president, and was on the board of directors for ten years. Roy loved fishing, hunting, skiing, golf and gardening, but his true passion was people. He had a life-long love affair with his wife, a deep and selfless love for his children, a tender and gentle love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and countless patients who called him their "friend." Roy is survived by his children: son, Dr. Roy A. (Frances) Hammond; Kristine Hammond; Richard S. (Sue) Hammond; and Robert R. (Lisa) Hammond; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Born January 12, 1915 in Provo, Utah to Ole Van Harris and Annie May Perry. Married John Raymond Erickson on July 6, 1940. Later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple September 11, 1967. Muriel graduated from Brigham Young Academy [Note: Brigham Young Academy ceased to exist in 1903 -- this is obviously a reference to Brigham Young High School, Class of 1932], then worked as a teletype operator for postal telegraph. She was a generous, sensitive and caring mother who loved flowers, animals and children. She is survived by her loving husband, John R. Erickson; and her three children, Sally Stanley, John Erickson, Joan Justis; as well as 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, February 2, 1996, in Sandy, Utah. Interment, Mountain View Memorial Estates. She married Alonzo Kay Berry on September 19, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She died June 29, 2000 in Provo, Utah. Interment, Whittier, California. ~ ~ ~ ~ Her parents: Lafayette Hinckley Holbrook and Alsina Elizabeth Brimhall. They had eleven children: 1. Lewis Watkin Roe died Peacefully with family by his side on December 7, 2005, age 92. Beloved husband of 68 years of Alice [Huckins?] Roe; loving father of Robert L. Roe and wife Sara Jane and Patricia A. Linden and husband, Leonard; devoted grandfather to Christopher Roe (Christine), Kristen Stewart (Jason), Catherine Roe (Amy), Robert Linden (Erica) and his 7 great grandchildren. Lew was known for his devotion to his family, his kindness to all who came into his presence, and his unlimited energy and enthusiasm. Lew was born on June 25, 1913 in Preston, Idaho to Watkin L. Roe and Louisa Gwen Mower. He moved to San Francisco during his childhood, but returned to his native Idaho for periods of time and ultimately attended Utah State University. Following his schooling Lew joined Columbia Geneva Steel in San Francisco in 1935 beginning a career with US Steel that spanned 43 years. He was a member of the first class of the Executive Development Program at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, a member of Financial Executives Institute and National Association of Accountants. Following his retirement in 1978, Lew enjoyed time with his family, his love of boating, and his many civic activities He served as a Public Works Commissioner for the City of San Mateo for 8 years. Active in Rotary for many years, he was also a founder and director of the Rotary Haciendas, a provider of low income housing for seniors. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 16 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, El Camino Real at Baldwin in San Mateo. Interment, Cypress Lawn in Colma. Her parents were Thomas Christopher Jackson and Esther Williams Jackson. She did not marry. Sadly, Lenila died the same year she graduated, on November 26, 1932. Like poet Emily Dickinson, she died from acute Bright's disease, brought on by rheumatic fever some five years before.
