Brigham Young High School Class of 1920

Names of 1920 high school graduates have been gathered from several sources, including yearbook entries in the 1920 BYU Banyan, and individual entries in the annual records of BYU found in the BYU Records Office, with research done by Scott Cowley. It appears the Class of 1920 list currently contains 145 profiles, but 11 of them have question marks because they have not been confirmed, hence 134 classmates. Those with question marks include: Betsy Banks, Louisa Banks, Martha Ellertson, Vida Leone Fugal, Viola Harrison, Leona Marie Jacobson, Elvin William Lewis, Reed Lowry Molen, Sr., Nell Roper, Stella Vernon and Zella Walch. University, Book 10, page 308. ~ ~ ~ ~ Meda Emily Abel Hunsaker, 90, of American Fork, died Friday, March 22, 1991 at the American Fork Hospital of causes incident to age. She was born July 31, 1900 in American Fork, to George E. and Mary Ellen Shelley Abel. Married Don L. Hunsaker, October 11, 1922 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died November 20, 1990. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1920, from BYU in 1948, and taught school, Second Grade, for 23 years. Having taught at Harrington, Forbes, and the Utah State Training School. She was a homemaker and member of the LDS Church, having served as a missionary in Florida, and as a temple worker. She loved gardening and yard care. Survived by two sons, four daughters, Max A. Hunsaker, Dora Helsing, Mrs. Delmar (Meda) Fraughton, all American Fork; Glen L. Hunsaker, San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Karl (Ramona) Jones, Murray; Mrs. Newel (Reva) Price Adamson, Lehi; 38 grandchildren, 110 great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Elmer (Mary) Clarkson, Provo. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 26, in the American Fork 8th Ward Chapel, 300 North 100 East, American Fork, Utah. Her interment, American Fork City Cemetery. His parents were William Ray Ashworth and Eliza Mangum Ashworth. Victor married Anna Margretta Peay on September 1, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Anna was born on February 6, 1907 in Provo, Utah. Her parents were Edwin A. Peay and Ida Stewart Peay. Victor served an LDS mission to Mexico from April 1923 to August 1925. Upon returning home, Victor worked as a farmer and electrician. Victor Maurice Ashworth died on April 18, 1988 in Inyo, California.

Melba Bachman Andrews died on June 23, 1986.

Lorna Bagley Winder died on May 1, 1995 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her interment, Valley View Memorial Park, West Valley City, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Lorna Bagley Winder, age 92, died May 1, 1995. Born in Provo, Utah, July 11, 1902, to Grant Charles Bagley and Etta Davis Bagley. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1920. She attended school at the University of Utah, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Later she received BS and MS degrees from BYU. Her marriage to George Winder on November 28, 1934 began a partnership that grew through their mutual interests and devotion to each other. Lorna was a partner with George in building a thriving Winder Dairy. For many years she capably managed the business office. With her husband she has traveled extensively all over the world. She and her husband have been generous benefactors to the U of U, Utah State and BYU. Lorna has been a member of the Town Club for over 40 years. She and her husband were members of the Alta Club. Member of LDS Church. Survived by husband, George; sister, Julietta Jensen; niece, Juliane Douglass, both of San Diego, Calif.; nephew, Grant Jensen, Las Vegas, Nev.; numerous Winder nieces and nephews. [Deseret News, Tuesday, May 2, 1995.] ~ ~ ~ ~ HER HUSBAND'S OBITUARY: George Winder, age 93, died August 28, 1995. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 20, 1902 to William C. Winder and Rose Taylor Winder. He attended LDS High School and graduated from the U of U where he was president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He married Lorna Bagley on November 28, 1934. She died May 1, 1995. As a partner and manager of Winder Dairy for over 50 years and a partner in Valley View Memorial Park, George was an admired and respected businessman. He will be remembered for his interest and concern for his employees. He sought out their ideas to improve the business. In 1948, he decided with the partners in the dairy, to invite employees to join a profit-sharing program which was an innovative idea at that time. He served on both state and national dairy councils. He was a member of Utah's House of Representatives, on the Utah State Fair Board, a director of First National Bank of Murray and of Walker Bank and Trust Company, a director of the Utah Manufacturers Association, won a merit of Honor Award from the U of U Emeritus Club, and received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the U of U in 1983. George and Lorna traveled extensively all over the world. He has been a generous benefactor to the U of U, contributing to a variety of programs. He has also contributed to BYU and Utah State University for research and scholarships, and in 1979 became a member of Old Main Society at Utah State. He belonged to the Bonneville Knife and Fork Club and the Alta Club. He was a member of the LDS Church. George and Lorna were important for over 50 years in influencing the lives of three generations of Winder children when they lived near them in their Granger home. He is survived by a brother, Joseph and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Elizabeth Liddle and Phyllis Cannon, and brothers, William, Jack, Shirl, and Ed. Class of 1920? ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Betsy (Bessie) Banks Clark, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away on Saturday, September 24, 1994. Born in a log house on November 16, 1901 in Sterrett (Ivins), Idaho to Thomas Joseph and Jane Angus Banks. Graduated from the Central Elementary School and Brigham Young High School in Provo, Utah, attending school in Provo during the winters and living on her parent's Idaho ranch in the summers. Married Vernon John Clark, September 12, 1923 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and lived in Idaho until 1927 when they moved to Salt Lake City and settled there. As an active member of the LDS Church, she served in ward Sunday School and Relief Society, stake Relief Society, and as a Salt Lake Temple worker for eighteen years. She also served a full-time LDS mission with her husband in Danville, Virginia. She had a strong work ethic and spent eighteen years running a boarding house and thirty-seven years selling Avon products. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother as well as being a friend to all, especially enjoying the association of young people. Bessie was a gracious hostess and a marvelous cook who opened her heart and home to all she knew. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 29, 1985, and survived by a daughter and son-in-law, MarJean and Blaine Wilcox of Salt Lake City; three sons and daughters-in-law, J. Vernon & Ruth Clark of Bountiful, Utah; Dean Angus and Marion Clark of Salt Lake City; and Max Banks and Donna Clark of Dallas, Texas; also two sisters, Mary Mickelsen of Grace, Idaho and Dale White of Spanish Fork, Utah, as well as thirty grandchildren and forty-five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Salt Lake City. Interment at Lakeview Memorial Estates in Bountiful. [Published in the Deseret News, Sunday, September 25, 1994.]

Class of 1920? Louisa Banks. OBITUARY: Louisa Banks Duke, 87, died January 26, 1990 in Newport Beach, California. Born August 27, 1902 in Spanish Fork, Utah, daughter of Elias and Annie Young Banks. Married Wilford O. Duke December 25, 1922 in Provo, Utah; he preceded her in death July 5, 1987. She lived in Idaho until the age of 2 when her father died. The family moved to Provo where she has resided since. Attended Maeser Elementary and graduated from Brigham Young High School. She was employed at the courthouse until she married Mr. Duke. Member LDS Church. While she was not active in a lot of organizations, she was always there for family, friends and neighbors. She was a loving and compassionate person. Survived by her daughter, Marilyn Duke Tyler, Costa Mesa, Calif.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Elias Banks; sister, Bernice Scholl, both Salt Lake City. University, Book 10, page 310. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Zina Jeanette Bishop Herron died March 31, 1993 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born November 16, 1899 in Provo, Utah to Willard and Eleanor Elizabeth Graham Bishop. She married Gideon Ernest Herron June 24, 1931 in the Manti LDS Temple. He died March 30, 1977. She was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in many different organizations. She received her teaching certificate from Brigham Young Academy [actually Brigham Young High School] in 1920. School teacher and principal in Utah County for 11 years. Her hobbies included tatting, crocheting and working puzzles. Her greatest love, next to her family was doing genealogy, which she continued to do up until the last years of her life, which were spent in the Sarah Daft Retirement Home. She prided herself on always keeping busy during her declining years. She was a special lady and touched many lives. Survived by children: Lynn E. and Elaine Herron, Bountiful, Utah; Kenneth D. and Kaye Herron, Overton, Nevada; Philip M. and Carol Lawson, Heber City, Utah; Stanley R. and Annette Herron, Las Vegas, Nevada; Calvin G. and Connie Herron, Mesa, Arizona; Patrick G. and Norma Waller, Warner Robins, Georgia; 27 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren. Velma married Wilford Hornberger Brox on June 9 [or 8], 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Velma Bylund Brox died on May 22, 1995 in Long Beach, California.

Source: Annual Record, B.Y. University, Book 10, page 10. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Helen Candland Stark, after a life which embraced many interests, died on Wednesday, May 25, 1994 in Provo, Utah. Born September 18, 1901 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to Arthur Charles and Lydia Hasler Candland, she was the eldest of nine children -- five brothers and four sisters. Five brothers and one sister preceded her in death. She was educated at Brigham Young High School, then attended Brigham Young University where she was graduated in Theatre and Drama in the new Department of Dramatic Arts. Her major professor was T. Earl Pardoe. She received her Masters Degree in English in 1936. She taught high school in Kanab, Jordan and for nine years at Bingham High School where she instructed in English and Dramatic Arts. She married Henry M. Stark, of Spanish Fork, Utah, in Washington D.C. on his birthday, March 28, 1936. He was a PhD chemist working for DuPont. They were pioneers in establishing a branch of the LDS Church in Delaware. Their old stone house and five pristine acres became a center for the growing LDS population. After Henry retired, the Starks decided to move ``home'' to Utah. In Delaware eager developers wanted to break up their five acres, and in Salem the attitude of the mayor made the Starks avid conservationists. Henry passed away on January 24, 1988 in Provo, Utah. During her lifetime she was interested in many causes, including with her husband: setting up a scholarship for ``Women In Science''; endowing a lectureship in honor of Alice Louise Reynold; and spearheading a drive to build an Alice Louise Reynold Room in the new Harold B. Lee Library. With her husband, Henry, she gave an endowment to the Lytle Ranch near St. George. They were interested in the Bean Museum project because it was a further attempt to save the wilderness. One of her major interests was a concern about the problems of women. Housebound for years by peripheral neuropathy, she used her mind to write many articles and essays, of which some have been published. She is survived by her three children, David in Salt Lake City; Sara in Arizona; and Karen in Texas. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 28, 1994 in Orem. Burial was in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery. Pleasant, Utah [BYH Class of 1923]; Don Charles Candland, born February 4, 1909 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah [BYH Class of 1928]; Louise Candland, born December 12, 1910 in Provo, Utah [BYH Class of 1929]; Arthur Ben Candland, born January 7, 1915 in Provo, Utah [BYH Class of 1933]; Ruth Hanna Candland born October 13, 1917 [or 1916] [BYH Class of 1935]; and Barbara Hope Candland, born October 4 [or 14], 1918 [BYH Class of 1937].
