Kathryn Smith. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Kathryn Smith Gilbert, (98), of Salt Lake City, Utah died May 22, 2001 at home in Salt Lake City. She was born July 1, 1902 in Beaver City, Utah, a daughter of Robert H. and Caroline Carlow Smith. She married Alonzo Jesse Gilbert on February 21, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died October 11, 1967. Kathryn graduated from the Murdock Academy in Beaver and from the Teachers College at BYU. She attended summer schools in Berkeley, California, Mexico City, the University of Washington in Seattle, and BYU in Provo, Utah. She began her teaching in the Beaver schools and later taught in Provo, Cedar City and Salt Lake City. She was a member of the LDS Church and was active in many of its organizations. She taught the MIA Gleaner Girls for 15 years, was a ward Relief Society president, a Primary teacher, a member of the Primary General Board for ten years, and later a member of the Relief Society General Board, where she wrote simplified lessons for the Island Relief Societies and the Indian Relief Societies. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe on her General Board assignments. After her retirement she was active in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the Penny campaigns for the Primary Children's Medical Center, and in various civic and social organizations. She is survived by her sisters, Ila Higham, Kearns, Utah; and Iva Fink, Burbank, California; and 20 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, May 25, 2001 at the Monument Park 2nd Ward, 1005 S. 2000 E., Salt Lake City. Her interment, Mountain View Cemetery in Beaver. His parents were John Canute Swensen and Margaret Ellen Davis (Davies) Swensen. He married Ruth Freebairn on August 16, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died on April 2, 1989 in Ogden, Utah. Interment, Ogden, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ His parents are John C. Swensen (Swenson), born February 4, 1869 [BYA High School 1888, BYA Collegiate 1900], married Margaret Davies (Davis) Swensen. John originally used the -SON spelling, but later in life he decided it would be better to use the -SEN spelling. John and Margaret had ten children; five of the children continued with the -SON spelling, but the other five changed and used the -SEN spelling. Taylor, Sr. a native of Provo, Utah, had served as a General Authority since April 6, 1958, when he was sustained as an Assistant to the Council of the Twelve. He continued his service as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy from October 1, 1976 until he was given emeritus status September 30, 1978. He was a former managing director of the Church’s welfare services program. At the time of his call to general Church service, he was presiding over the California Mission. Prior to his mission appointment, he had served for ten years as president of the East Sharon and Sharon stakes in Provo, Utah. During that time he was also chairman of the Mt. Timpanogos Welfare Region, which then comprised ten stakes, and the Central Utah Welfare Region. From 1944 to 1946, he served as bishop of Provo’s Pleasant View Ward. Elder Taylor was born November 22, 1903 in Provo, the son of Arthur Nicholls and Maria Louise Dixon Taylor. His parents had the following children: Arthur Dixon Taylor, BYH Class of 1915; Elton L. Taylor, BYH Class of 1918; Alice Taylor (Nelson), BYH Class of 1919; Henry Dixon Taylor, Sr., BYH Class of 1921; Clarence D. Taylor; and Ruth Elaine Taylor (Kartchner). Henry (Sr.) was reared on a farm in Provo, which provided the background for his later service in the welfare program. After graduating from Brigham Young High School in Provo in 1921, Elder Taylor worked as an accountant for a real estate company before accepting a call to the Eastern States Mission. He was president of the Connecticut District and later served as mission secretary. Returning home, he received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Brigham Young University in 1929. In 1937 he received his master of arts degree in retailing from New York University Graduate School. On December 26, 1929, he married Alta Hansen of Richfield, Utah, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were the parents of four sons. After his first wife died, Elder Taylor married Ethelyn Peterson Taylor in 1986. Elder Taylor was long associated with the family mercantile business, Dixon-Taylor-Russell Home Furnishers, in Utah County. Active in civic affairs, he was a past president of the Provo Chamber of Commerce and Provo Kiwanis Club, and vice-president and chairman of the executive committee of Utah Valley LDS Hospital. He was survived by his widow, Ethelyn, Salt Lake City, Utah; sons, Henry D. Taylor, Jr. [Senior Class President, BYH Class of 1949], Palo Alto, California; Anthony H. Taylor, Salt Lake City, Utah; Stephen K. Taylor and David A. Taylor, Provo, Utah; sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving were brothers and sisters, Alice Taylor Nelson, Elton L. Taylor, Clarence D. Taylor, and Ruth Elaine Taylor Kartchner, all of Provo, Utah. “I loved Brother Taylor,” said President Ezra Taft Benson at funeral services February 27 eulogizing Elder Henry Dixon Taylor, an emeritus member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. “I thank God I’ve had the opportunity of rubbing shoulders with this great man.” Elder Taylor died in a Salt Lake hospital February 24, 1987, after a brief illness. He was eighty-three years old. Services were held in the Salt Lake Eagle Gate Stake Center, with burial at the Provo City Cemetery. Also speaking at the funeral were President Gordon B. Hinckley, First Counselor in the First Presidency; President Thomas S. Monson, Second Counselor in the First Presidency; and Arch L. Madsen, former bishop of the Oak Hills Ward. President Howard W. University, Book 10, page 394. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Fern Wadley Edwards Harris, passed away February 29, 2000 in Bountiful, Utah after a long and well-lived life at the age of 98. She was born April 7, 1901 in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Richard David Wadley and Mary Ellen Olsen Wadley. She was the oldest of 10 children with five brothers and four sisters. She married Vivan Bagley Edwards on June 14, 1922 in the Salt Lake Temple. Her three children were born from this union. They were later divorced. Fern married Stanley B. Harris, December 17, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple and they had many happy years living on the Harris farm in Lindon, Utah, until Stan passed away in 1972. During this time they raised a grandson, Michael Hepting, and cared for Stan's mother and half sister. At Stan's death, Fern moved back to Pleasant Grove until 1990, when she moved to Bountiful to be near family. Fern graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1921 and taught school for many years in Charleston, Lindon, and American Fork, as she raised her children. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings in Relief Society, Primary, and Young Women. Her greatest joys in life were her family, her church and her gardens. She especially loved her association with the Pleasant Grove Garden Club. Fern is survived by her son, Max Vivian and Norman Edwards and daughter, Maurine Hansen; brothers: Arvil and Helen Wadley, Merlyn Wadley, Clifton and Mary Wadley; and sisters: Grace Chipman and Leah and Eldon Robinson; stepchildren: Shirley Harris, Wilford Harris. She also will be lovingly remembered by 44 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and five great great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by son, Richard Paul Edwards (who died in World War II); brothers: Glenwood Wadley and Albert David Wadley; sisters: Mary Isabell Wadley and Lucille Wadley Hansen; a grandson: Donald Joseph Hansen and great-grandson, Tyson Michael Hepting. The family wishes to thank the staff at South Davis Community Hospital and the South Davis Hospital Community Branch for their loving care of Fern for these past few years. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 4, 2000 in the Pleasant Grove, Grove Ward Chapel, 455 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove, Utah. Her Interment, American Fork City Cemetery. Class of 1921? Edith Mae Ward. HER PARTIAL OBITUARY: Edith Mae Ward Carter, age 97, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2000. She was born in Provo, Utah to Joseph Orson and Mary Jane Boardman Ward on July 17, 1903, the third of four children. After graduating from Brigham Young High School, she married John Norman Carter, also of Provo, on November 10, 1926. The young couple soon settled in Salt Lake City where Edith's husband worked in the steel castings industry. Edith and John Norman Carter were the parents of two children. Her interment, Lehi, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Vernett Clara Webb Tidwell, 90, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away June 22, 1992, Salt Lake City, Utah. Born May 6, 1902 in Lehi, Utah to Bernard Graham Webb and Clara Lena Rothe Webb. Married Delbert Cleon Tidwell, January 7, 1925 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple; he died Jan. 21, 1990. She was employed as a School Teacher, Principal in Ely, Nevada, White Pine County. She resided in McGill, Nevada for 45 years. She also taught school in Salina and the Page School in Provo. Enjoyed music, music teacher, playing the organ and piano for many organizations in the Church, School, and the DUP. Active in the Church as President, Counselor and had many other positions within the Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School, and Mutual. She is survived by her children, Eugene Tidwell, Huntsville, Alabama; Marilyn Prusse, Chico, California; Ray Tidwell, Huntsville; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ward and Robert Webb, Lehi; and Richard Webb, American Fork; one sister, Blanche Atkinson Smith, Salt Lake City. She was preceded in death by her husband and sister, Mabel Jense. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, in 1992 in the Ivins Ward LDS Chapel, 1860 South 300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah.
