Walter is pictured with the BYH Class of 1927 in the BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Walter William Hiller, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 1993 in the LDS Hospital from respiratory complications following cancer surgery. Walter was born in Leipzig, Germany, the son of William Richard Edward Hiller and Bertha Auguste Boehme. He graduated from Brigham Young High School, and then from BYU with a Bachelor of Arts degree. His marriage to his first wife, Audrey Jackson [BYH Class of 1927], was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 14, 1933. She preceded him in death in 1961. There were six children born to this marriage. On November 5, 1962 he married Annie Olson in the Logan LDS Temple. Walter operated the Hiller Bookbinding Company until 1982 when he retired and with his wife, served a mission to the Austria Vienna Mission. Other church service includes two stake missions, various ward and stake assignments, Temple Square Guide for many years and was currently serving in the LDS Member Locating Department. He was survived by his wife Annie and six children: Walter W. Hiller, Jr. (Joan Chapman); Henriette H. Haworth (Robert H.); Melvin Jackson Hiller (Lyn Packer); Irene H. Johnston (N. Paul); Evelyn Hoen (John M.); Karl Jackson Hiller (Debbie Christensen); also survived by his brother Rudolph William Hiller and by 31 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 19, 1993 in the Valley View 8th Ward, 4032 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Mememorial Park. [Deseret News, Thursday, June 17, 1993]

She married Benjamin Alva Maxwell on May 27, 1932. She died on June 19, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her parents: Lafayette Hinckley Holbrook and Alsina Elizabeth Brimhall. They had eleven children: 1. Raymond Brimhall Holbrook, born March 16, 1902 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. He married Esther Ruth Hamilton on August 24, 1928. He died in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 24, 1989. 2. Rachel Holbrook, born December 6, 1903 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. She married Robert Clair Anderson on May 25, 1927. She died June 17, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Manti, Utah. 3. George Blaine Holbrook, born April 8, 1906 in Provo, Utah and died August 2, 1924, at the age of 18. He did not marry. 4. Jennie Holbrook, b. March 3, 1908 in Provo, Utah. She married Delbert Valentine Groberg on June 11, 1930. She died March 25, 2004 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. 5. Mary Holbrook, b. March 2, 1910 in Provo, Utah. She married Benjamin Alva Maxwell on May 27, 1932. She died on June 19, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah. 6. Ruth Holbrook, born January 8, 1912 in Provo, Utah. She married Francis Ray Brown on May 27, 1932. She died December 16, 1983 in Pasadena, California. Interment, Provo, Utah. 7. Elizabeth Holbrook, born February 9, 1914 in Provo, Utah. She married Alonzo Kay Berry on September 19, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She died on June 29, 2000 in Provo Utah. Interment, Whittier, California. 8. Jean Holbrook, born October 7, 1915 in Provo, Utah. She died August 26, 1923 at the age of almost 8. Interment, Provo, Utah. 9. Helen Holbrook, born in about 1917. She married Carlyle Dahlquist. She resides in Provo, Utah. 10. Vera Holbrook, born October 29, 1918 in Provo, Utah. She married Maurice King Heninger on June 5, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lorna is pictured with the BYH Class of 1927 in the BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Lorna Jensen Harrison, 91, passed away from natural causes Tuesday, January 6, 2004, in Provo, Utah. She was born in Provo April 17, 1912, to Christen Jensen and Juliaetta Bateman Jensen. She attended the BYU Training School and Brigham Young High School, from which she graduated. In 1933, she graduated from BYU with a degree in English. At BYU she took a botany course and met a good-looking lab assistant named Bertrand Harrison, whom she married September 17, 1931, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were together 70 years before he passed away September 3, 2002. Four children were born to them: Bertrand Kent Harrison (Janyce) and Linnaea Harrison Lindstrom (Brent) of Provo, Leon Christen Harrison (Jackie) of Okinawa, Japan, and Philip Alan Harrison (Colleen) of Hyrum, Utah. They have 33 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. A great-great-grandchild is on the way. Lorna was a fine pianist and performed publicly on many occasions, often in duets with other pianists. She was an excellent typist. In her teen years she won a typewriter for typing 15 minutes without a mistake. She often typed theses for BYU graduate students and was a typist for a short time in the Church Seminary and Institute Department. Her ties to BYU were very close. She taught at BYU for a few semesters. Her minor at BYU was Botany and she occasionally substituted for Bertrand in his classes. She was a member of the BYU Women and served as its president. She was also a member of the Fine Arts Club and the Alice Louise Reynolds Club, in both of which she served as president, and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She worked as a Pink Lady at the Utah Valley Hospital for several years. She was a member of the Provo Browning Society, which was founded by her mother. She was a member of the Provo City Shade Tree Commission for 20 years and served as its chair for the last eight of those. As a member of the State Commission, she was secretary and president and helped to get approval in the State Legislature for a bill protecting valuable trees. Lorna was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, filling such positions as organist, editor of the Provo 12th ward newsletter, ward Relief Society teacher and president and member of the stake board. In later years Lorna and Bertrand bought a camper and went to places such as the Oregon coast, which they loved. They went fishing on many of their outings. They loved to be with each other. Lorna is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grand-children. The family expresses thanks to all the friends who have provided care for Lorna and Bertrand in recent years, particularly the fine staff at the Courtyard at Jamestown Assisted Living Community. Funeral services were held Monday, January 12, 2004, in Provo, Utah. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Deseret News, Saturday, January 10, 2004.]

Educated in Provo schools, active in tennis and basketball, Student Body President of Brigham Young High School, graduated 1928. Member of BYU tennis team four years and later refereed high school basketball. Active in vocal music and drama. Graduated from BYU, with an additional year of Graduate School. Taught eight years at Duchesne and Davis High schools. Entered USC Dental School in 1942, oldest in his class by thirteen years, graduating with four top honors in 1945. Taught dentistry five years at USC, practiced in Los Angeles until retirement and moved to Salt Lake City in 1976. Life-long member of LDS Church, serving in many organizations in ward and stake leadership positions, including bishopric and high council. Served three Stake Missions in California with his first wife, Maurine Romney, who he married in the Salt Lake Temple August 17, 1934. She died January 31, 1981. Talented builder, carpenter, electrician, and self-taught piano, organ and guitar. Member of Southern California Mormon Choir for fourteen years. Served his Church and community all his life with his vocal music until late 1980's. Served on Board of Directors BYU Alumni Association, Emeritus Club 1984-1987. Was a Captain U. S. Air Force, Korean War, 1951-1953. Married Joy Holladay Johnson, Salt Lake Temple, February 13, 1982. They served an assignment in 1987 at the Church Museum of History and Art. Preceded in death by his first wife, Maurine Romney Johnson; son, Robert Kent Johnson, and one granddaughter. Also by parents and four sisters. Survived by his wife, Joy Holladay Johnson, Salt Lake City; daughter, Joneen Matsen (John M.), Salt Lake; daughter, Judy Theobald (Allen D.), Mesa, Arizona; son, J. Kendall Johnson (Connie), Laguna Hills, California; daughter, Wendy Riggs (C. Eugene), Simi Valley, California; daughter, Jeanne Johnson, Salt Lake City; 27 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also survived by one sister, Celestia Johnson Taylor, Provo, Utah. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 17, 1994, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. He is pictured with the BYH Class of 1927 in the BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. ~ ~ ~ ~ The Kartchner children grew up in Provo with their widowed mother, Rose Heath Kartchner. The children included: Ray, Alma, Ethel, Ruth, and Fred. Their father, Asael Wain Kartchner, died when the children were young. Growing up during hard economic times taught them to work hard, to be resourceful, to persevere, to seek education, and to be very frugal. In Provo of the 1920's, the boys grew up skinny dipping with their pals in the Provo River, picking raspberries and peaches on their Uncle's farm on the Orem bench, working one odd job after another to earn a little extra cash, hiking Timp every summer and some of the boys hopped freights to Wyoming and back. The children pursued their educations and had families.

Her parents were Oscar August LeVanger and Lucy Alice Seaman LeVanger. Elwa married Sherman William Hudson on March 27, 1928 in Logan, Utah. Sherman was born on October 23, 1902 in Holbrook, Oneida County, Idaho. His parents were William Thomas Hudson and Ella Amanda Sparks Hudson. Sherman died on August 26, 1962. Elwa LeVanger Hudson died on May 16, 1989 in Pasadena, California.

Brigham first married Ida Stucki on January 20, 1897 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ida was born on January 20, 1897 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ida Stucki Liechty died on December 12, 1900 in Provo, Utah. Brigham and Ida had three children: 1. Brigham Jacob Liechty, born November 27, 1897 in Provo, Utah. He married Lula Alice Frandsen. 2. Edna Elizabeth Liechty, born January 18, 1899 in Provo, Utah. She married William F. Breitling. 3. Heber John Liechty, born on December 9, 1900 in Provo, Utah. He apparently did not marry. Ida Stucki Liechty died on December 12, 1900 in Provo, Utah. ~ ~ Abraham Brigham Liechty second married Louise Reinwald on April 20, 1904 in Provo, Utah. Louise was born on June 15, 1875 in Heilbrom, Wurttenberg, Germany. Brigham and Louise had four children. 1. Ida Louise Liechty [BYH Class of 1925], born July 14, 1905 in Clear Creek, Carbon County, Utah. She did not marry. 2. Gertrude Liechty, born November 17, 1907 in Scofield, Carbon County, Utah. She married Edward William Payne. 3. Helen Rose Liechty [Lewis] [BYH Class of 1928], born May 27, 1910 in Scofield, Carbon County, Utah. She married Raymond White Lewis. 4. Wilhelm Reinwald (Reiny) Liechty [BYH Class of 1933], born on March 17, 1915 in Storrs (Spring Canyon), Utah. He married Florence Firmage. Parents Louise Reinwald Liechty died on July 18, 1962 in Provo, Utah, and A. Brigham Liechty died on November 6, 1963, also in Provo. ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY OF HER HUSBAND: Raymond W. Lewis, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home December 31, 1995, after a short battle with cancer. His loving partner of 63 years, Ruth Brown Lewis, was at his side. He married Ruth in 1933 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Liechty, who died in 1931. Born in Woodland, Utah, March 20, 1909, "Ray", as he was called by his many hundreds of friends and associates, was a rare mix of optimism, enthusiasm and vision. He left his father's sheep ranch to attend BYU for two years and launch his own business. His business achievements were many, including Zonoco Ice Cream Company in Phoenix, Arizona, and owner of three O.P. Skaggs stores, among the first supermarkets in Salt Lake City, Boulder City, Nevada, and Holbrook, Arizona. His O.P. Skaggs store on 4th South between 7th and 8th East in Salt Lake was considered a pioneer of modern supermarket merchandising and featured the first frozen food locker plant in the Salt Lake Valley. He later moved to Los Angeles with his large family of nine children and started Lewis Catering, which he owned and operated for over 10 years. He returned to his home state in 1962 where he purchased and developed Zion Ponderosa Ranch on the Rim of Zion National Park in Southwestern Utah. This spectacular property of over 5,000 acres, adjoining one of the country's most beautiful national parks, became his pride and joy. Although Ray loved his many creative and visionary business ventures, nothing was more important to him than his family and his church. He filled an LDS mission to New Zealand in the late 1920's. He served in various church positions in Utah and California, including elder's quorum president, stake seventies quorum presidency, Sunday school stake president and member of two stake high councils. He also had a special love for the Maori people of New Zealand and was involved for many years in scholarship fund raising campaigns for the Church College in Hamilton, New Zealand. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; and all of his nine children, Rose Maurine Neeleman, Ray Wendell Lewis, Gayle McNeal, Cindy Karrington, Diane England, Connie Davis, Ginger Larsen, Penny Brown and James Scott Lewis; 44 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Naomi Madsen Thomas Barton, age 90, passed away peacefully April 4, 2000, in Salt Lake City. Naomi was born June 16, 1909 in Provo, Utah, the daughter of John William Madsen and Margaret Grace Forsyth Madsen. She married Joseph Henry Thomas in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 14, 1930. He later preceded her in death in 1967. She later married George Bert Barton on June 15, 1992 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was an active member of the LDS Church and served many years as ward and Stake Primary president. She was a stake missionary and a Hostess at the Visitors Center on Temple Square. Naomi was a kind and loving individual who was devoted to her family; she was held in high esteem by all who knew her. Her passing saddens our hearts and leaves a great void in our lives. Survivors include her husband, George Bert Barton, of Salt Lake City; five sons, Lloyd (Geraldine) Thomas, Tooele, Utah; Keith (Jean) Thomas, Salt Lake City; Kent (Carolyn) Thomas, Salt Lake City; Dale (Lueda) Thomas, Omaha, Nebraska; Neil Thomas, Dahlonega, Georgia; 34 grandchildren; 34 great-grand-children. Preceded in death by brothers, Dwight and Horace, and sisters, Daisy, Fern, Varna, Shirley, and two infants, Rudger and Von. Married Ralph W. Stanford on June 9, 1930 in Los Angeles, California. She was the mother of Ralph C. Stanford, Doris Stanford Volker and Bruce E. Stanford, 15 grandchildren. Bernice enjoyed her many years raising her children in southern California, then spent 15 years living and being cared for by her sisters and family members in Henderson, Nevada. Her last years were spent near her daughter in Salt Lake City. Funeral services were held, Monday, March 6, 1995 in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 Highland Drive. Born July 21, 1911 to Augusta Trabert and Robert H. Sauer in Provo, Utah. After graduation from Brigham Young Academy [BYHS], she taught Home Economics at Farrer Junior High. She married Glen L. Humphries Dec 27, 1940 in Provo, Utah; later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple Nov. 16, 1943. She served in numerous capacities for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including Relief Society presidency, Sunday School and Primary teachers, homemaking instructor and visiting teacher. Gertrude was employed most of her life by the Murray City School District as a School Lunch Supervisor for McMillin Elementary, from which she retired. In her leisure, she enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, cooking; she was the ideal homemaker. Gertrude especially enjoyed giving compassionate service and spending time with her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include sons, Ronald G. (Shirley) Humphries, Richard D. (Margie) Humphries; grandchildren, Yvonne (Dave) Fokken, Kevin (Kristen) Humphries, Tarryn (Darron) Batton, Troy (Shari) Humphries, D.J. Humphries, Talli (David) Andrus, Casey (Koreen) Humphries, Tami (Brent) May, Chad Humphries; and seven great-grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday, October 10, 2001, 11 a.m., in the Belview Ward. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. In her memory, the family suggests donations be made to the Robert H. Class of 1927? Mary Eliza Smith Campbell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away September 10, 2002 at the age of 92. Born December 2, 1909, West Jordan, Utah to George Sivell and Ethel Egbert Smith. She was raised on the family ranch in Thatcher, Idaho, where she attended school, graduating as Valedictorian. She attended Brigham Young Academy and worked for the Telephone Company. She married Harold (Hiley) Campbell in March 1936, and together they raised six sons and one daughter. He passed away October 1985. She resided in Sandy with her family for sixty years. She was an active member of the LDS church, and an ordinance worker at the Jordan River Temple for six years. Member of The DUP, submitting many pioneer histories of her ancestors. Mary enjoyed reading, working in her beautiful gardens, quilting, and needlepoint; she made over 100 Christmas needlepoint stockings for her family and friends. Every grandchild received a handmade quilt, which she had lovingly made. Survived by her sons and daughter, Ronald Campbell (Jeanette), Murray, Glen Campbell (Raye Deane), Bob Campbell (Gloria), Don Campbell, (Chris), all of Sandy, Mary Williams (Howard,) Bluffdale, 25 grandchildren, 82 great grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren; brother, John Smith, Smithfield. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, sons, Jack and Allen, her parents, brothers, Wilbur, Horace, and Max Smith, sisters, Luella Western and Margaret Smith. Anthony is pictured with the BYH Class of 1927 in the BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Wilbur Anthony ``Tony'' Sowards, beloved husband and devoted father and grandfather, passed away on July 29, 1994 in Provo. Born August 4, 1908, to Wilbur Sowards and Bertha Holtsclaw Sowards in Manassa, Colorado. The family moved to Vernal, Utah where Tony received his early education. Following a move to Provo, where he attended Brigham Young High School, he graduated from Brigham Young University and attended Standford University EDP. He was an active member of the LDS Edgemont Fifth Ward. He served as Stake Auditor for many years. He also served as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple. An avid scouter, he served as a vice-president in the Utah National Parks Council and was the recipient of a Silver Beaver Award. Tony was a tax auditor for the Utah State Tax Commission and retired as an auditor and accountant for U.S. Steel after over 30 years of service in Chicago, San Francisco, and Geneva Steel. Tony was active in tennis circles for many years. He was a member of the Riverside Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors and the Finance Committee. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants and Internal Auditor organizations. He married Ruth Smith [BYH Class of 1939], of Provo, in Santa Cruz, California. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. He is survived by his wife and four children: Diane Merrill (David), Renton, Washington; Paul A. Sowards (Karen), Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mark S. Sowards (Lila), Orem, Utah; and Jane Sowards, Lindon, Utah. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; also surviving are four sisters: Josephine Sowards Strong, Sacramento; California; Myrtle Sowards DeHart, Logan, Utah; Beulah Sowards Bucher and Jewell Sowards Bybee, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother, Clifford Sowards, Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 3, 1994 at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, Provo. Internment, Provo City Cemetery [Deseret News, Sunday, July 31, 1994] ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY OF HIS WIFE: Ruth Smith Sowards, 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 after a full and happy life. Ruth was born in Provo, Utah, on July 10, 1921, to John Sims and Myrtle Hone Smith. She grew up in Provo and graduated from B.Y. High School in 1939. She attended Utah State University in Logan and worked for J.C. Penney, Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co., and Geneva Steel. Ruth married Wilbur Anthony "Tony" Sowards on May 3, 1947, in Santa Cruz, California. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple on April 30, 1966. They were the parents of four children. Tony passed away in 1994. Ruth was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she served in various callings related to scouting and in many other ward and stake positions. She received the Silver Beaver Award, the Provo Peak Award, and many other honors for her years of dedicated service to the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She helped countless young men to gain their Citizenship merit badges. Ruth loved to golf and was a longtime member of the Riverside Country Club. She helped organize numerous tournaments and greatly enjoyed her involvement with the Riverside Ladies Golf Association and Riverside's junior golf program. An avid reader and writer, she was especially fond of poetry and penned several dozen poems throughout her life. Ruth was also a devoted sports fan, following the fortunes of the Cougars and the Jazz. She spent time helping and serving others. She was an excellent cook. Ruth had a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to make others feel loved and appreciated. She was an unselfish, helpful, and caring person and was a friend to all. Ruth is survived by her four children: Diane Sowards (David) Merrill, Renton, Washington; Paul (Karen) Sowards, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mark (Lila) Sowards, Orem, Utah; and Jane Sowards (Martel) Jensen, Tucson, Arizona. She has 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also survived, but only for a few hours, by her sister, Marjorie Smith [BYH Class of 1932] Hyatt, of Boise, Idaho, who died on April 17, 2008. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Aldwyn Smith and Paul Hone Smith. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 21, 2008 at the Mojave Chapel, 3050 N. Mojave Lane, Provo. Interment, Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State St. The family suggested that, in lieu of flowers, friends make a donation to their local scouting program. [Provo Daily Herald, April 19, 2008.]
