BYH Class of 1928:

Our chief source for the graduation list is an article in the Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, published on Wednesday, May 23, 1928. Fifty members of the class are mentioned in the newspaper. While the article claims that this is the largest graduating class in the history of BYU High School, there are many earlier classes that had larger graduation lists. This appears to be a fairly complete list.

Class of 1928. Burnell Aagard. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. Source: The Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, May 23, 1928. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Andrew Burnell Aagard, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, age 87, passed away Saturday, September 5, 1998. He was born September 19, 1910 in Fountain Green, Utah, the son of Mary Ellen Ostler and John Edward Aagard. He was reared and educated in Fountain Green. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1928, and then graduated from Brigham Young University. He married Mary Hansen. They were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple on March 28, 1942. He was manager of D.L. Evans Bank, Albion, Idaho, and manager of the Royal Inn Motel, Provo. As a younger man he spent his summers in the family sheep business. He was a member of the Ogden 78th Ward, a high priest. He and Mary served a mission in Nauvoo, Illinois, and he had also served as a Stake Missionary in Burbank, California. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Provo. Survivors include his wife; two sons and one daughter, James Andrew (Kathleen) Aagard, Orlando, Florida; Brooks Burnell (Elizabeth) Aagard, Orem, Utah; Mary Andrea (Grant) Holland, Layton, Utah; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers and three sisters, Wesley and Welby Aagard, Vance Aagard, LaPrele Neville, Hazel Bailey, and Kenna Rasmussen. He was preceded in death by one brother, John; and one sister, Laurel. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 12, 1998, in Fountain Green, Utah. Interment, Fountain Green Cemetery. Class of 1928. Joseph Allen. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. Source: The Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, May 23, 1928. ~ ~ ~ ~ Joseph Knight Allen. His parents: R. Eugene Allen [R. for Robert - BY Academy Commerce teacher 1900-1902] and A. Inez Knight [A. for Amanda - daughter of Jesse Knight - she was Matron of BY Academy 1900-1092.] The children of Eugene and Inez were: William Eugene Allen [BYH Class of 1919], Jesse Knight Allen [BYH Class of 1921], Robert Knight Allen [BYH Class of 1926~H], Joseph Knight Allen [BYH Class of 1928?], and Mark Knight Allen. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Joseph Knight Allen, 85, died June 4, 1995, at his home in Atherton, California. Born Jan. 1, 1910 in Provo, Utah, he was the son of Inez Knight and Robert Eugene Allen. After graduating from BYU High School in Provo in 1928, Joe attended Brigham Young University for three years. He then transferred to Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California, where he received a B.S. and M.B.A. degree. He married Ruth Stevens, from El Paso, Texas, in the Salt Lake Temple in 1935. They had one son, Joseph Stevens Allen. Joe was a devoted member of the LDS Church, where he served in many capacities including executive secretary of the Menlo Park, California Stake. He was a regular temple worker for many years in the Oakland, California Temple. In 1936, Joe and Ruth moved to El Paso, Texas, where he helped in the management of the Stevens ranching properties in Mexico. During the banking troubles of the 1930s, Joe was a traveling auditor in the Western States for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. He was later employed by Morris Knudson in the construction of the Geneva Steel Works in Utah. Morris Knudsen later transferred him to Boise, Idaho. He was later hired by the Utah Construction Co., where he worked for over 25 years. His early assignments at Utah included acquiring iron ore and other mining claims in Western Canada and the Western United States. Utah Construction later changed its name to Utah Construction and Mining Co. and finally to Utah International. His last assignment was in San Francisco, as vice president in charge of industrial land development. Joe retired from Utah International in 1975. Since retirement, Joe has been active in managing his own real estate properties in California and Utah. Joe was an avid Rosarian and shared his abundance of roses with friends and relatives. He regularly furnished bouquets for his LDS Ward Chapel. Joe is survived by his son, Steven, his brother, Mark Knight Allen, Provo; Utah; six nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; three brothers, William Eugene, Jesse, and Robert Knight, and his mother and father. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 7, 1995 in Menlo Park, Calif. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Published in the Deseret News, Thursday, June 8, 1995.]

Class of 1928. Atha Baum [or Athea Baum]. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. Source: The Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, May 23, 1928. ~ ~ ~ ~ Atha Baum was born on June 15, 1909 in Provo, Utah. Her parents were Harmon David Baum and Susan Moore Baum. Atha [Athea] Baum died on July 23, 1949, of broncho pneumonia, in Provo, Utah. She never married.

Class of 1928. Eliza Bjerregaard. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. Her parents were Oscar Fullow Bjerregaard and Catherine Perry Middleton Bjerregaard. Eliza died on May 12, 2001 in Ogden, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Eliza Marie Bjerregaard, 90, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at the Washington Terrace Nursing Center in Ogden, Utah. She was born November 4, 1910 in Sedonia Arizona Territory, a daughter of Oscar and Catherine Middleton Bjerregaard. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1928, then from BYU, and lived most of her life in Provo. She moved to Ogden in 1996 to be close to her family. She was a member of the LDS Church and had served as a Sunday School teacher and in the MIA. She was a member of the Altrusa Club and held various offices within the club. She is survived by a sister, Maxine Bjerregaard (Harold J.) Webb, Ogden; sister-in-law, Eleanor (George) Bjerregaard, Provo; niece, Jacqueline W. (Allen) Broadhead, Ogden; two great-nephews; three great-great-nephews and two great-great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her brother, George W. Bjerregaard. Graveside services were held at the Provo City Cemetery on Wednesday, May 16, 2001. The family suggested that donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Eliza's name. Class of 1928. Joseph Bown. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. Source: The Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, May 23, 1928. ~ ~ ~ ~ He used the nickname "Casey". ~ ~ ~ ~ Joseph Leo Bown (Jr) was born on February 10, 1909 in Provo, Utah. His parents were Joseph Leo Bown (Sr) and Emma Newell Bown. Joseph L. Bown (Jr) died on August 19, 1986 in Salt Lake City, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS WIFE'S OBITUARY: Aldean Burnham Spackman Bown. Our beloved "Nana" peacefully left this life on Friday, September 21, 2001 at the age of 103, to walk with the Angels. She died with family at her bedside. She was born June 23, 1898 in Richmond, Utah to James Lewis and Amy Penrose Burnham. She was the ninth of 12 children. She married Thomas Spackman, June 6, 1912 in the Logan Temple. They later divorced. She married J.L. Casey Bown, January 16, 1939 in Randolph, Utah. Nana was a wonderful Mother and friend to all. She shared her love and knowledge of the outdoors, especially, her love of Vivian Park, and "the Pines" at Flaming Gorge. She was an accomplished seamstress. She made appliqued quilts, handwork, and needlepoint. She was a marvelous cook, and "The hostess with the mostest". Nana was an avid reader and enjoyed a variety of books, and the morning paper. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a true lady in every sense of the word. Our visits to "Nana's Coffee Shop" will be greatly missed. Nana was preceded in death by her husband, son Paul Spackman, and a son-in-law, Dr. Weston D. Brown. She is survived by her sister Velda Bennett of Ogden; son Thomas Dean (Dorothy) Spackman; daughter Linda S. Brown of Wenatchee, WA; 11 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Audrey S. Olsen. Candland was born February 4, 1909 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ His parents: Arthur Charles Candland and Lydia Hasler, married October 13, 1897, in Manti, Utah. They had nine children, including the following seven: Helen Candland, born September 18, 1901 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah [BYH Class of 1920]; Harold Arthur Candland, born March 16, 1903 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah [BYH Class of 1923]; Don Charles Candland, born February 4, 1909 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah [may be BYH Class of 1928]; Louise Candland, born December 12, 1910 in Provo, Utah [BYH Class of 1929]; Arthur Ben Candland, born January 7, 1915 in Provo, Utah [BYH Class of 1933]; Ruth Hanna Candland born October 13, 1917 [or 1916] [BYH Class of 1935]; and Barbara Hope Candland, born October 4 [or 14], 1918 [BYH Class of 1937]. ~ ~ ~ ~ Don Charles Candland died on February 14, 1946.

Class of 1928. Wilma Eldredge. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. Source: The Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, May 23, 1928. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Wilma Lambert Eldredge, 95, was born the eighth of 12 children to Frederick Elnathan Eldredge and Julia Druce Lambert on November 27, 1907. Wilma Lambert Eldredge died on October 20, 2003. Wilma was born and raised in Granger, Utah, and spent most of her life in an old pioneer home, located in what was then a rural farming community. She attended Granite High, graduated from BY High School in 1928 and later from Brigham Young University, from which she obtained a teaching certificate. She taught for more than 30 years in the elementary schools of Granite School District. She loved teaching, reading, and the close association of her family, especially her many nieces and nephews, whose lives she so positively influenced. Wilma was a member of the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers. She loved her country, its history, her freedoms and liberties. She also loved Church History her pioneer ancestry. Wilma was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a firm and undeviating testimony of the Savior and the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and served countless years as a teacher in the Primary and Sunday School organizations. Wilma is survived by a loving younger sister, Martha Eldredge(Denton) Moulton; younger brother, Victor (Ruby) Eldredge. She is preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and sisters, Almira Eldredge Baird, Leah Eldredge, Lurena Eldredge Warnick, Inez Eldredge Simons, Minnie and Millie Eldredge (twins), Asahel Eldredge, Ruth Eldredge Swenson, and Wayne Eldredge. He was born in Logan, Utah, 24 May, 1912, to Franklin Stewart Harris, Sr. and Frankie Estella Spilsbury. He was educated in schools of Logan, Utah, Brigham Young High School and Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, and received a Ph.D. in Physics from California Institute of Technology. He was affiliated with the University of British Columbia, the University of Utah, Aerospace Corporation of El Segundo, California, and Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, and retired to Rockville, Utah in 1978. He was active in numerous international scientific organizations. He participated in many community activities. In Boy Scouts of America, he was an Eagle Scout and received the Silver Beaver. He served in the German-Austrian Mission and the European Mission Office for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a contributing editor to the Improvement Era for 31 years and wrote two books on the Book of Mormon. He was a High Priest in the Springdale Ward. He married Maurine Steed in the Salt Lake Temple. He is survived by his wife; a brother, Chauncy D. Harris, Chicago, Illinois; sisters, Mrs. Ralph W. Jenson (Helen), Spanish Fork, Utah; Mrs. Vernon D. Jensen (Leah), Pocatello, Idaho; and Mrs. Ralph O. Bradley (Mildred), Salt Lake City, Utah; children, Frank S. Class of 1928. Ada Haymore. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. Source: The Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, May 23, 1928. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Ada Haymore Olmstead died March 23, 1994 at the age of 87. For her final 20 years she had Alzheimer's disease, but kept smiling and loving the tender care of her children, grandchildren, and others. She was born March 2, 1907 in Colonia Oaxaca, Sonora, Mexico to parents, John Aderum and Mary Beecroft Haymore. At age five, her family moved to Douglas, Arizona. There she had a lovely childhood with five sisters and two brothers, and many wonderful relatives and friends in the Douglas LDS Ward. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo, Utah in 1928. She then attended the University of Arizona at Tucson. She married Roland M. Olmstead on December 23, 1930 in San Jose, California. They made their home in Salt Lake City where they were sealed in the Temple on July 3, 1931. They had four daughters, Joan, Carolyn, Patricia, and Shirley Elizabeth. Roland died July 14, 1947. She carried on valiantly as a widow for 47 years and provided a loving home life for her girls. She helped them fulfill their goals and achieve their life's dreams. They worked hard, had a lot of fun together, and somehow survived the difficult times. Her daughters and 22 grandchildren have received generously of her love with pinwheel cookies, quilts, pajamas, and letters. Now there are 50 great-grandchildren. She is now reunited with her beloved Roland, dear parents and grandparents, sisters, Adaline, Katie, Leah, and Anna Lee and brother Roscoe who have gone ahead. Survived by daughters: Joan (Mrs. Joseph) Thompson of Spanish Fork, Carolyn (Mrs. A. Ken) Larson of Kaysville, Patricia (Mrs. Spencer) Erickson of Centerville, Shirley Elizabeth (Mrs. Verne) Nelson of Nigeria Ibadan Mission; brother, Arnold Haymore of St. David, Arizona, Sisters: Erma (Mrs.Richard) Cunningham of Afton, Wyoming; Wanda (Mrs. Ray) Nelson of Yuma, Arizona. Her funeral was held on Saturday, March 26, 1994 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Class of 1927 & Class of 1928. Tubou Hettig. Graduated from Brigham Young High School on Thursday, May 24, 1928. He is pictured with the BYH Class of 1927 in the BYU Banyan yearbook, BYH section.~ ~ ~ ~ Information about Eduard Becker and August Hettig from Samoa. The first Hettig in Tonga appears to be William Joseph Diedrich Hettig from Altona in Germany. He was aged 42 in May 1916, therefore born about 1874. He came to Tonga in January of 1891. His son, August St. John Hettig, was born in Nuku'alofa on June 24, 1896. His daughter, Catherine Hettig, was born in Nuku'alofa on July 18, 1897. Son, Hanslar? Diedrich Hettig, was born in Nuku'alofa on September 12, 1903. Daughter, Elizabeth Ella Hettig, was born in Nuku'alofa on June 6, 1905. Another son, Tubou Martin Hettig, was born in Nuku'alofa on September 20, 1908. They were all living in Kapeta, Tongatapu in May 1916, along with Maile Seini Hettig, aged 22, who married Houma Tongatapu on August 8, 1894. She appears to be William Hettig's 2nd wife. She might be the mother of Tubou Martin Hettig but not of the others. [Source: Christine Liava'a, October 9, 2006, RootsWeb] ~ ~ ~ ~ HETTIG FAMILY HISTORY: Tubou Hettig was born in September 20, 1908 in Tonga. He came to the U.S. in 1925, and some researchers in Salt Lake City believe that he was the first Tongan to come to the U.S. He seems to have been given both Martin and David as middle names, but throughout most of his life he went by the name "T. David Hettig." He graduated from Brigham Young University High School in 1928. He married Florence Speckart, a graduate of Provo High, and the daughter of Frank and Harriet Speckart. They were married on January 1, 1933. They both graduated from BYU, where Tubou served as editor of the university newspaper. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Philosophy at the University of Minnesota. He worked as City Editor of the Logan, Utah newspaper, where their first daughter, Melba Lee Hettig, was born in 1933. He later worked for the State of Utah in Salt Lake as a statistician, where two sons, first David, and then Richard, were born. In 1948, the Hettig family moved to Denver, Colorado, and Tubou Hettig went to work for the newly created U.S. Department of Health, Education & Welfare (HEW). In 1954 he transferred to the San Francisco, California office of HEW, where he worked until his untimely and unexpected death from a heart attack on March 27, 1957. His son, David Hettig, now lives in Menlo Park, California, where he has lived and practiced law in the Palo Alto-Menlo Park area for more than 30 years. The youngest son, Richard Hettig, lives in Australia and has since the 1970's. The eldest daughter, Melba Lee, passed away suddenly in 1978, leaving three children. She married Benjamin Alva Maxwell on May 27, 1932. She died on June 19, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her parents: Lafayette Hinckley Holbrook and Alsina Elizabeth Brimhall. They had eleven children: 1. Raymond Brimhall Holbrook, born March 16, 1902 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. He married Esther Ruth Hamilton on August 24, 1928. He died in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 24, 1989. 2. Rachel Holbrook, born December 6, 1903 in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. She married Robert Clair Anderson on May 25, 1927. She died June 17, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Manti, Utah. 3. George Blaine Holbrook, born April 8, 1906 in Provo, Utah and died August 2, 1924, at the age of 18. He did not marry. 4. Jennie Holbrook, b. March 3, 1908 in Provo, Utah. She married Delbert Valentine Groberg on June 11, 1930. She died March 25, 2004 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. 5. Mary Holbrook, b. March 2, 1910 in Provo, Utah. She married Benjamin Alva Maxwell on May 27, 1932. She died on June 19, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah. 6. Ruth Holbrook, born January 8, 1912 in Provo, Utah. Class of 1928? Myrtle Marie Iverson. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Myrtle Marie Iverson Calder, 92, longtime Provo resident, passed away February 21, 2003, of complications following surgery. She was born May 28, 1910, in Vernal, Utah, to Charles Martin and Lydia Richens Iverson. She attended Naples Elementary School where her father was principal and at the age of 14 moved to Provo. Myrtle graduated from B.Y. High and Brigham Young University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting in 1931. She was employed by Taylor Brothers Department Store in Provo from 1931 to 1935. While there, she met her future husband, James Hamilton Calder, and they were married April 1, 1935, in the Salt Lake Temple. Following their marriage, they both terminated their employment at Taylor Brothers. Hamilton began his career in banking as cashier at Farmers & Merchants Bank, and together they owned and operated Calder's Luncheonette, a popular college ice cream shop located south of BYU Lower Campus. They sold their business in 1940. From 1944 until she underwent hip replacement surgery in 1998, Myrtle was active in several family businesses with her husband and children. In 1948 they built their home in northeast Provo. Myrtle loved people and had a gift of making everyone feel welcome in their home, which through the years has been a gathering place for family and friends. Myrtle was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities and always supported her family in their callings. She received the Golden Gleaner award. She was a member of the BYU Alumni Board from 1948 thru 1951 and served as President of Literary League. Her life was filled with work, optimism, and never-ending loyalty to her family and friends. She will long be remembered for her patience, courage and endurance, her delightful sense of humor, and for her loving personality. Her greatest treasure was her family. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Calder, Provo; her son, James H. Calder (Ann), Provo; and their children Jay (Lara) Calder, Boston, MA; Christine (Clark) Gilbert, Boston, MA; Catherine (Tony) Horsley, Philadelphia, PA; Mark (Shannon) Calder, Nashville, TN; Kimberly Calder, serving an LDS mission in Romania; Scott Calder, serving an LDS mission in Thailand; and seven great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by her husband who died December 13, 1972; her parents; her sister, Bessie Iverson Meiling; and her brothers Ivan C. Iverson [BYH Class of 1935] and Andrew Iverson.
