Class of 1928? Myrtle Marie Iverson. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Myrtle Marie Iverson Calder, 92, longtime Provo resident, passed away February 21, 2003, of complications following surgery. She was born May 28, 1910, in Vernal, Utah, to Charles Martin and Lydia Richens Iverson. She attended Naples Elementary School where her father was principal and at the age of 14 moved to Provo. Myrtle graduated from B.Y. High and Brigham Young University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting in 1931. She was employed by Taylor Brothers Department Store in Provo from 1931 to 1935. While there, she met her future husband, James Hamilton Calder, and they were married April 1, 1935, in the Salt Lake Temple. Following their marriage, they both terminated their employment at Taylor Brothers. Hamilton began his career in banking as cashier at Farmers & Merchants Bank, and together they owned and operated Calder's Luncheonette, a popular college ice cream shop located south of BYU Lower Campus. They sold their business in 1940. From 1944 until she underwent hip replacement surgery in 1998, Myrtle was active in several family businesses with her husband and children. In 1948 they built their home in northeast Provo. Myrtle loved people and had a gift of making everyone feel welcome in their home, which through the years has been a gathering place for family and friends. Myrtle was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities and always supported her family in their callings. She received the Golden Gleaner award. She was a member of the BYU Alumni Board from 1948 thru 1951 and served as President of Literary League. Her life was filled with work, optimism, and never-ending loyalty to her family and friends. She will long be remembered for her patience, courage and endurance, her delightful sense of humor, and for her loving personality. Her greatest treasure was her family. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Calder, Provo; her son, James H. Calder (Ann), Provo; and their children Jay (Lara) Calder, Boston, MA; Christine (Clark) Gilbert, Boston, MA; Catherine (Tony) Horsley, Philadelphia, PA; Mark (Shannon) Calder, Nashville, TN; Kimberly Calder, serving an LDS mission in Romania; Scott Calder, serving an LDS mission in Thailand; and seven great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by her husband who died December 13, 1972; her parents; her sister, Bessie Iverson Meiling; and her brothers Ivan C. Iverson [BYH Class of 1935] and Andrew Iverson. Funeral services were held Friday, February 28, 2003 in Provo, Utah. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. [Deseret News, Wednesday, February 26, 2003.]

Kent Johnson, retired dentist, born September 5, 1909, Provo, Utah, died March 13, 1994 in Salt Lake City, Utah, after an extended illness. Son of Justus Wanderous Johnson and Violet Deseret Nash. Educated in Provo schools, active in tennis and basketball, Student Body President of Brigham Young High School, graduated 1928. Member of BYU tennis team four years and later refereed high school basketball. Active in vocal music and drama. Graduated from BYU, with an additional year of Graduate School. Taught eight years at Duchesne and Davis High schools. Entered USC Dental School in 1942, oldest in his class by thirteen years, graduating with four top honors in 1945. Taught dentistry five years at USC, practiced in Los Angeles until retirement and moved to Salt Lake City in 1976. Life-long member of LDS Church, serving in many organizations in ward and stake leadership positions, including bishopric and high council. Served three Stake Missions in California with his first wife, Maurine Romney, who he married in the Salt Lake Temple August 17, 1934. She died January 31, 1981. Talented builder, carpenter, electrician, and self-taught piano, organ and guitar. Member of Southern California Mormon Choir for fourteen years. Served his Church and community all his life with his vocal music until late 1980's. Served on Board of Directors BYU Alumni Association, Emeritus Club 1984-1987. Was a Captain U. S. Air Force, Korean War, 1951-1953. Married Joy Holladay Johnson, Salt Lake Temple, February 13, 1982. They served an assignment in 1987 at the Church Museum of History and Art. Preceded in death by his first wife, Maurine Romney Johnson; son, Robert Kent Johnson, and one granddaughter. Also by parents and four sisters. Survived by his wife, Joy Holladay Johnson, Salt Lake City; daughter, Joneen Matsen (John M.), Salt Lake; daughter, Judy Theobald (Allen D.), Mesa, Arizona; son, J. Kendall Johnson (Connie), Laguna Hills, California; daughter, Wendy Riggs (C. Eugene), Simi Valley, California; daughter, Jeanne Johnson, Salt Lake City; 27 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1928. When he enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 25, 1942, he was single, had four years of college, and was working as a mail carrier. He married on April 9, 1946 to Roene Curtis. Roene was born on April 6, 1916, and her parents were Erwin Ray Curtis and Lydia Agnes Crook Curtis. Roene Curtis Johnson died on July 24, 2003. Vearl died on December 30, 1992 at the age of 83, in Provo, Utah.

Frank Jorgensen, age 80, died August 30, 1990, in Lomita, California. He was born in Salina, Utah, April 30, 1910, to H. Frank Jorgensen and Bertha Olsen Jorgensen. He married Ruth Harding of Payson, Utah in Salt Lake City April 8, 1937. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Frank graduated from Brigham Young University in 1934, and from the University of Southern California in 1940, with a Master of Arts degree. Mr. Jorgensen taught school for 40 years on all levels of education. He taught at Granite High School in Salt Lake City for 16 years, and at El Camino, College in Torrance, California for 20 years. Frank was greatly loved by his family. He is survived by: His wife, Ruth, Lomita, Calif.; one son, Vern, Chula Vista, Calif.; daughters, Mrs. Bill (Marie) Stewart, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs. Ronald Watkins (Phyllis), Rancho Bernardo, Calif.; Mrs. Tod Johnson (Lucille), Ramona, Calif.; and 23 grandchildren; one sister, Olean Allred, preceded him in death. Services were held Wednesday, September 5, 1990, in the Palos Verdes LDS Stake Center in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Interment was held in the El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, California. His parents were John Reuben Kindred (1882 - 1963) and Mabel Mower Kindred (1884 - 1964). Crede married Neva Farmer. He died on December 7, 1960 in Ogden, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS WIFE'S OBITUARY: Neva Farmer Kindred Smeath (84) of Springville, Utah passed away on January 31, 1996 at Garden Terrace in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born January 7, 1912 in Escalante, Utah to James and Mary Caroline Eaton Farmer, she married John Crede Kindred of Springville on August 17, 1931 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Salt Lake City, Provo, and Ogden where they were very active in church and civic affairs. Crede died on December 7, 1960 in Ogden, Utah. She later married Jack Smeath of Provo on December 25, 1962 and they lived in Orem, Provo and Springville. He died January 20, 1994. Neva was active in the LDS Church where she served in the Primary, MIA and Relief Society organizations. She and Jack served as ordinance workers in the Salt Lake and Provo Temples and they served a mission to Scotland. Neva was active in many civic clubs and participated in numerous community affairs along the Wasatch Front.Survived by a daughter, Carol Thornton, Sandy; a son, Jim Kindred, Page, Arizona; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Boyd Smeath, Orem; Donna Peterson, Provo; Lorna Jones, Murray; Marilyn Goble, West Valley; and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceded in death on January 2, 1995 by her son, Jerry Kindred, Salt Lake City [Jerold Crede Kindred, BYH Class of 1953]. Funeral services were held on Monday February 5, 1996 in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Wilhelm Reinwald (Reiny) Liechty [BYH Class of 1933], born on March 17, 1915 in Storrs (Spring Canyon), Utah. He married Florence Firmage. Parents Louise Reinwald Liechty died on July 18, 1962 in Provo, Utah, and A. Brigham Liechty died on November 6, 1963, also in Provo. ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY OF HER HUSBAND: Raymond W. Lewis, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home December 31, 1995, after a short battle with cancer. His loving partner of 63 years, Ruth Brown Lewis, was at his side. He married Ruth in 1933 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Liechty, who died in 1931. Born in Woodland, Utah, March 20, 1909, "Ray", as he was called by his many hundreds of friends and associates, was a rare mix of optimism, enthusiasm and vision. He left his father's sheep ranch to attend BYU for two years and launch his own business. His business achievements were many, including Zonoco Ice Cream Company in Phoenix, Arizona, and owner of three O.P. Skaggs stores, among the first supermarkets in Salt Lake City, Boulder City, Nevada, and Holbrook, Arizona. His O.P. Skaggs store on 4th South between 7th and 8th East in Salt Lake was considered a pioneer of modern supermarket merchandising and featured the first frozen food locker plant in the Salt Lake Valley. He later moved to Los Angeles with his large family of nine children and started Lewis Catering, which he owned and operated for over 10 years. He returned to his home state in 1962 where he purchased and developed Zion Ponderosa Ranch on the Rim of Zion National Park in Southwestern Utah. This spectacular property of over 5,000 acres, adjoining one of the country's most beautiful national parks, became his pride and joy. Although Ray loved his many creative and visionary business ventures, nothing was more important to him than his family and his church. He filled an LDS mission to New Zealand in the late 1920's. He served in various church positions in Utah and California, including elder's quorum president, stake seventies quorum presidency, Sunday school stake president and member of two stake high councils. He also had a special love for the Maori people of New Zealand and was involved for many years in scholarship fund raising campaigns for the Church College in Hamilton, New Zealand. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; and all of his nine children, Rose Maurine Neeleman, Ray Wendell Lewis, Gayle McNeal, Cindy Karrington, Diane England, Connie Davis, Ginger Larsen, Penny Brown and James Scott Lewis; 44 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Source: The Evening Herald, Provo, Utah, May 23, 1928. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Lloyd Kermit Sorenson, age 89, died November 8, 1999 in Provo, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on January 16, 1910 in Veteran, Nevada, to Albert Lloyd Sorenson and Agnes Swenson. He attended school in Kimberly and Ely, Nevada as well as Gunnison, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1928. Attended Brigham Young University, Class of 1931. He married Joyce Goodman in 1935 and they enjoyed 63 years together before she died in 1998. He was employed by Kennecott Copper Corporation for 39 years and his integrity and honesty were well known in his many responsible positions in engineering and accounting at Ruth and McGill, Nevada. He was a member of the Ely, Nevada B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1469 for 62 years, a member of the BYU Emeritus Club and for many years a devoted member of the BYU Cougar Club. He and his wife moved to Provo in 1976. He was a member of the Edgemont 12th Ward. He enjoyed snow skiing, photography, bowling and music. Upon retirement, he learned to play the electronic organ which provided him many hours of enjoyment. He was an outstanding example of love and concern for all of his family, his many friends and neighbors, and all who knew him. He was very independent and never wanted to be a burden to anyone. He is survived by a son; William K. (Joyce) of Woods Cross and one daughter; Jeanette (David) Alger of Provo; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. One brother; John E. Sorenson, two sisters; Avonell (Foster) Rappleye and Marjorie (Junius) Remund. Preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, an infant daughter, Sandra and a sister, Dortha Wallace. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999 at the Edgemont 12th Ward Chapel, 350 East 2950 North, Provo. Interment, East Lawn Memorial Hills, Provo. John originally used the -SON spelling, but later in life he decided it would be better to use the -SEN spelling. John and Margaret had ten children; five of the children continued with the -SON spelling, but the other five changed and used the -SEN spelling. He married Ruth Freebairn. ~ ~ 4. Alice Swenson, born May 10, 1905, died in infancy. 5. Margaret Swensen [BYH Class of 1923], born May 29, 1906, died January 30, 1987. She married James L. Jacobs. ~ ~ 6. Francis McLean Swenson (Mac) [BYH Class of 1926?], born June 29, 1908, died August 22, 1963. He married Willa Sowards. ~ ~ 7. Merle Vance, age 86, died Wednesday March 26, 1997 in Springville, Utah. He was born June 29, 1910 in Provo, Utah. He was the eldest child of nine of parents Stella Jean Nelson Vance and Arthur A. Vance, long time residents of Provo, Utah. He was a member of the LDS 10th Ward in Springville. A graduate of Brigham Young High School, Classes of 1927 & 1928, and of Brigham Young University, Merle worked as a night clerk at Hotel Roberts and shared a dairy route with his brother Morris throughout their college years. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Weston, David, and Morris. Survivors include one brother, John Richard Vance (Lorraine) of American Fork, Utah; and four sisters: Argene Vance Olsen, Castle Dale, Utah; Margaret Vance Koster, Stockton, California; Virginia Vance Husband (Dale), Washington, Utah; and Jessie Vance Diamond (George), St. George, Utah. Graveside Services were held Monday, March 31, 1997 at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State Road. Services were under the direction of Walker Mortuary of Provo. She was born March 6, 1910, in Duchesne County. She attended Brigham Young High School, graduating in 1928, and received her teaching certificate from the University of Utah and later graduated from BYU. She married Wendell H. Bradford August 28, 1933, in Logan. The marriage was later solemnized August 28, 1945, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Leona was an exceptional mother, teacher, and an active member of the LDS Church. She is survived by her three children, Jane Ann Bradford (Paul R.) Olsen of Salem, Utah, William (Joyce) Bradford of Smithfield, Utah, Leon (JoAnne) Bradford of Santaquin, Utah; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one sister and three brothers, Nora Hennings, Melvin White, Elmer White and Evan White. Leona was preceded in death by her husband on May 31, 1956. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in Spanish Fork. Interment, Spanish Fork City Cemetery. Wimmer and Emma Cowan Wimmer. Maxine was born August 4, 1910. ~ ~ ~ ~ Maxine married Charles Burdick. Burdick was born June 7, 1895 in Spring City, Sanpete County. He was a son of Lutellus and Esther Zabriskie Burdick. He was a resident of Duchesne most of his adult life. He was struck and killed by an automobile in July 1946 as he walked along a highway three miles from Duchesne. Age 51, he was survived by his wife, Maxine Wimmer Burdick, six sons and daughters: Howard, John, Jerry, Barbara, Caroline and Shirley Burdick, all of Duchesne; his mother, a brother, Lyman Burdick, Bluebell, Duchesne County; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Burdick Bailey, Gerron, Emery County; Mrs. Dee Burdick Nielson, McFee, Colorado; and Mrs. Helen D. Burdick Mott, Duchesne, Utah. She was born August 4, 1910 in Duchesne to John David and Emma Cowan Wimmer. Married Charles Burdick on July 29, 1929 in Preston, Idaho. He died July 23, 1946. Maxine was the Duchesne County Recorder for 32 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1937 and held all local offices and served in the leadership of District #9, Department Chapeau - 8 & 40. Member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, member of the LDS Church and was a Primary teacher for many years. Maxine was instrumental in getting programs for the handicapped in the County, and was a founder of the Duchesne County Association for Retarded Children and has been active with the Uintah Basin Association for Handicapped Children.
