Along the way I also picked up a Physics degree at BYU and did graduate work in Mathematics at the University of Rochester. Since retirement in 1999 I have alternated between travel and work. The main reason for my continued peripatetic lifestyle is that I can't decide where I want to live. BYU MS Industrial Education 1963. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Howard Darnel Buckley (Shumway) was born July 22, 1940, in Tropic, Utah. He passed away on August 15, 2021, in Apple Valley, California. He was surrounded by family and friends as he left this mortal life. And he was welcomed by those who had been waiting for him beyond the veil. Howard was the last child born to James Howard and Lieuwen Savage Shumway. He had four siblings, Ronald, Sharon. Beth and Ardis. When he was a very young child he was adopted by William D. and Annie Wheelwright Buckley. Howard died of pancreatic cancer on August 15, 2021. He attended B Y Elementary, B Y Jr. High and Brigham Young High School, graduating in the Class of 1958. Howard played kickball in the blocked off 6th North street, alongside the elementary school. He played basketball on the asphalt just outside the school (the basket looked like an open tulip with no backboard on it). He played baseball in a field a couple of blocks north of school. In high school he excelled in academics and sports. He competed in all of the sports, but football was his favorite. He was small in stature and got knocked around a lot but that didn’t deter him. When Howard was a sophomore at BY High his seminary class took a trip to the Manti Temple and the temple permitted the small class of about 20 to have a special meeting in the temple just for the class. A few weeks before Howard’s passing he spoke of that “wonderful experience the class had in the temple. That the class met in the temple for hours being instructed by their seminary teacher, Melvin Brooks, and virtually everyone in that class bore their testimonies and feelings in that spiritual meeting.” Howard further expressed that it was “an experience that stayed with him his entire life and guided him through life’s many challenges and established his testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel.” After graduating from high school in 1958 he joined the Army Reserves for six months of active duty at Fort Ord, California, along with some of his best friends, Dee Sandgren, Bob Terry, Steve Nelson, John Whetten and Jim Wilde. All his life BYU Football was his passion as he watched his beloved Cougars play. He was an avid fan, following them wherever they played and whenever he could. He was known for driving all the way from California just to watch a game, and then return all the way back home the very next day. He was especially proud of the 1984 National Championship Game he attended in San Diego. Howard was a talented snow skier and won many championships himself. He was especially gifted at downhill racing and could compete against men half his age and showed them how it was done. He was such a great skier that his scholarship paid for his education at BYU. Howard met Diane Williams Buckley at BYU and married her in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had three children. Cassandra, Nicole and Howie. He also had five grandchildren. Howard and Diane were divorced and he later married Regina Lillquist Hudson. Regina had a son Trevor and a daughter Lisa and two grandsons, Preston and Nickolas, and they were welcomed by Howard. Howard was a gifted builder and he built every home he lived in over the years, each one bigger and better than the last. He also designed them all and built furniture for his homes and for others. He was a master craftsman. Howard discovered wind sailing later in life and it also became his passion. He went to Baha every January over the years and said he did so to “sail his brains out.” He looked forward to those trips like a child at Christmas. Howard was preceded in death by his birth parents, Howard and Lieuwen Shumway, and his adoptive parents, William and Annie Buckley. Also preceded in death by two life-long friends, Gar Jensen and Sherm Cloward. Howard’s funeral services were held on August 19, 2021, in Howard’s home ward in Apple Valley, California. Howard was a beloved friend by many. He was also buried next to his parents in the Provo City Cemetery. Many friends and family came from quite a distance to pay tribute to their life-long friend. It was a beautiful day and after the dedication of the grave by Terry Robbinet, the Cougar Fight Song was sung and everyone joined in the rousing chorus of “Rise and Shout.” Blue and white balloons were then released and they sailed all the way over the LaVell Edwards Stadium. It was hard to say goodbye to this beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He was a giant of a man, with a deep faith in God and a willingness to serve his fellow man. Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, David Martin Christensen, passed away unexpectedly July 17, 2017. He was born on March 23, 1940, to Leonard and Maurine Christensen in Los Angeles. He had an older half-brother, Bruce, and half-sister, Joyce. When he was 12 the family moved to Provo, where David attended Brigham Young High School and participated in varsity sports. He graduated in the BYH Class of 1958. He attended Brigham Young University, where he studied the Russian language, including a course in Leningrad, and earned his degree in 1968. He married ReNae Andreasen in 1964 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had three sons, Richard, Clark and Glade, whom he loved very much and of whom David was very proud. Dave was an amateur radio operator, K7BWZ, and enjoyed communicating with people all over the world. He served as State Director of the Military Affiliate Radio System, an emergency preparedness program. His hobby led to his career as an electronics technician at Utah Power and Light. He retired in 1998. David was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved missionary work, serving several stake and Temple Square missions in addition to his two-year mission in Southern California. He was in several bishoprics, and on the High Council. He loved singing in the ward choir. He was a kind, non-judgmental gentleman, always willing to serve. We will miss him. Survived by his wife, sons: Richard (America); Clark (Laurie); and Glade (Mary), 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Sherm was a three-year Football Letterman, Football Co-Captain in his senior year, two-year Basketball Letterman, starting center in his Senior Year, Letterman’s Club Vice President, Sophomore Class VP, Junior Class VP, Key Club President and District Lt. Governor, Radio & Physics clubs, Band, Chorus, Junior Prom Committee Chair, Junior Achievement Award, and Speaker at Graduation. ~ ~ ~ ~ BYU PreMed/PreDent Zoology, 1991. ~ ~ ~ ~ He attended BYU prior to serving an LDS mission to the West Central States (Montana Billings, now). He served as 2nd Counselor in Mission presidency (Assistant to the President). In 1966 Sherm graduated from University of Washington School of Dentistry in Seattle and as a senior student received the Department Award for Excellence in Periodontics. He served as a Captain in United States Air Force as a dentist from 1966-1968. He moved to Provo and began dental practice in 1968, and retired from practice in 2006 after 37 years. He has served as President of the Provo District Dental Society, and as President of the Utah Academy of General Dentistry. He was a charter member of Clinical Research Associates, and also a charter member of the LDS Academy of Dentists. He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, and also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists -- a distinction less than 4 percent of dentists achieve. He is also a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the American Dental Association. He has served as a counselor in two stake presidencies, as a Bishop, and on two High Councils. He has been president of the Provo Kiwanis Club, Campaign Chair for United Way of Utah County twice, District Campaign Chair for the Boy Scouts of America, and President of the Squaw Peak Chapter of Sons of Utah Pioneers. Sherm built five custom homes that he and his family have lived in, and he has developed numerous office condominiums and over 100 residential condominiums, plus two carwashes and three convenience stores. He married Sheryle Allred, Provo High School Class of 1962 and a former Miss Provo. They are the parents of six children: Kimberlee, Steven, Kristie, Scott, Kevin and Shannon. They are grandparents of 22 ½ grandchildren, all of Utah County. Sherm and his wife served a mission to the Los Angeles Temple Visitors Center in 2002-2003, and they now serve as ordinance workers at the Provo Temple. Sherm currently serves as High Councilor in the Provo Edgemont Stake. Sherm and Sheryle enjoy traveling, including visits to Alaska, Hawaii, Tahiti, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, London, Paris, Vienna, Rome, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. @2010 ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Dr. Sherman Livingston Cloward DDS, devoted son, husband, father, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2018. Sherm was born on February 15, 1940, to Wells P. and Myrle Cloward in Payson Utah. He attended Peteetneet, Timpanogos and Page Elementary schools. He earned his Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow in the Boy Scouts of America, and helped all three sons earn theirs too. At BY High School he was a 3-year football letterman, co-captain his senior year, 2-year basketball letterman, starting center his senior year, Letterman’s Club Vice President, Sophomore Class VP, Junior Class VP, Key Club President, District Lt. Gov., and a speaker at graduation in the Class of 1958. He attended Brigham Young University from 1958 to 1960 before serving a mission in the Western States Mission (Billings Montana) from March of 1960 to March of 1962. With the help of his parents and Mission President, he applied and was accepted to the University of Washington Dental School in Seattle while still serving on his mission. This allowed him to start Dental School the fall immediately after his mission. After completing his freshman year of Dental School he returned home for the summer and met the love of his life, Sheryle Allred. After a whirlwind two-week courtship they were engaged. Sherm left for fall semester of Dental School and returned to marry Sheryle during Christmas break. They married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, December 20, 1963 before returning to Seattle where they started their family. Upon his graduation in 1966, the young family moved to Victorville, California, where Sherm served in the US Air Force as a Dentist. After being honorably released after two years of service, he and Sheryle moved their growing family back to Provo to start his dental practice. He had a high standard of excellence at work. His patients and employees meant so much to him throughout his professional career and beyond. He always believed in completing many more hours of Continuing Education than the required to be at the forefront of his profession. He became a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. Many patients who have moved away have reported that their new dentist described Sherm’s work as excellent. Sherm knew how to work hard and play hard; always carving out time from work to vacation with Sheryle, his kids, grandkids, and friends. Next to being a caretaker for Sheryle, traveling was his favorite hobby. Sherm believed in community and church service. He served as President Provo District Dental Society, President of the Utah Academy of General Dentistry, Campaign Chair of the United Way of Utah County, Campaign Chair for the BSA, President of the Provo Kiwanis Club, President of the Cougar Club, and President of the Squaw Peak Chapter of the Utah Sons of Pioneers. During his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served as: Oak Hills 5th ward Priest Quorum Advisor, BYU Second ward Bishop, BYU 9th Stake High Councilor, 2nd Counselor in the BYU 13th Stake Presidency, Oak Hills Stake High Councilor, First Counselor in the Bishopric of the Oak Hills 5th ward, and Edgemont Stake High Councilor. In 2002 he and his wife left to serve an LDS mission together at the Los Angeles Temple Visitors Center. They served for 12 months. The last 15 years of his life Sherm has been a devoted care taker to his sweetheart, Sheryle, until his own health no longer allowed him to. He loved her, and his posterity fiercely, and always went to great lengths to host parties so his family spent time together often. His family will be forever grateful for his efforts in building family relationships, and for his strong testimony of Jesus Christ and his Father in Heaven. Sherm is survived by his wife Sheryle, sisters Connie (Bob) Parsons and Kelly Petitt, children Kim (Russ) Tolley, Steve (Ann), Kristie (Tim) Kapp, Scott (Miriam), Kevin (Kristi) and Shannon (Jason) Salmon. He leaves behind 27 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at 11 am at the Edgemont Stake Center on 3700 North and 330 West in Provo Utah. A viewing will be held from 6:30 to 8 pm on Tuesday, July 24 at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North in Orem, then again before the funeral, at the Stake Center from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Kay was born September 5th, 1940, to Wendell Davis and Leah Belle Oakley Collins. He attended Provo schools and graduated from BY High in 1958. Kay then attended BYU where he studied sound engineering and was an avid student of physics and the social sciences as well. Kay began dating the love of his life, Gloria Sargent of Springville, in 1962 and they had an unusually fun courtship. The two married March 11th, 1965. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on their wedding anniversary in 1970, and they would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary next Spring. Kay Collins was a man of integrity and compassion. He was a quick study and developed skill and expertise in every field in which he ever engaged. Kay worked as a camera operator and sound engineer for three years at KSL in Salt Lake City. He then became Technical Services Manager for Audio Visual Operations at BYU for seventeen years where he was later described by a previous employee as the kindest man I ever worked for. Kay oversaw sound and lighting for concerts, BYU devotionals and firesides, basketball and football games, and organized a crew that helped him provide sound services for the early years of the annual Mormon Miracle Pageant in Manti, Utah. In 1979 he left to expand his business of Carousel Recording (begun in 1963) to Carousel Service Center. Kay became President of a union local, Provo City Mayoral candidate, and County Delegate. Kay was part of the Production team for such movies as Footloose (1983), Newsies (1990), and Swing Kids (1991). For 51 years he was the sound and lighting director for Colleen Collins Smiths Dance Studio in Provo, Utah; and for the last several years Kay has operated sound for the end-of-year dance festivals in the Provo School District for several schools. From 1988-1998 Kay was a member of the team that created and operated Disneylands incredible Fantasmic water/laser show. And from 1994 to 2004 he focused his business on the installation of immaculate audio-visual systems in corporate conference rooms, government buildings, many K-12 schools from Weber County to Utah County, as well as Weber State University, Westminster College, and the University of Utah. Darbro, 59, of Provo, Utah, passed away on September 5, 1999 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 21, 1940, in Belvedere Township, California, to Kenneth and Lois Bray Darbro. He graduated from BY High School and served 4 years in the U.S. Army. Jay married Jill Healy on November 13, 1969, in the Salt Lake Temple. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many leadership positions. Jay was a retired police officer, and had worked for Newton Manufacturing Company for 20 years. Survivors include his wife Jill, two sons, Shaun (Kerin), and Roger (Pepper), both of Utah; four daughters, Darcy (Jack) Larson, Jerome ID; Donette (Jim) Denison, Cheree (Shane) Halona, and Sandi, all of Utah; 17 grandchildren, and one sister, Dorothy (Alan) Dailey of Midvale, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one daughter, Denise.

Garn, 68, of Rexburg, passed away surrounded by his loving family Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Madison Memorial Hospital of pulmonary fibrosis. He was born December 6, 1940, in Rexburg, Idaho, to M. Kenneth Garn and Gwen Waldram Garn. He grew up in Moody and attended school in Sugar City. Phil moved with his family to Nampa, Idaho, for a year during high school. They then moved to Provo, Utah, where he graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1958. He served in the Finland Helsinki Mission for the LDS Church from 1960 to 1963. He attended Brigham Young University where he met his sweetheart, Christina Helena Myntti. They were married October 24, 1964, in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. Phil was involved in business ventures with his father at College Motors, Viking Motel and "R" Skating. He sold and installed central vacuums with his father and sons for more than 40 years. He also worked for 27 years at Madison Co-op and retired from Bowen Petroleum. His greatest joy in life came from his family, especially his grandchildren. Phil was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many church callings, including as counselor in two Ricks College bishoprics, ward and stake financial clerk and as a temple worker. He is survived by his wife, Chris; six children, Kaesi (Kevin) Johansen, Derek (Marilyn) Garn, Tyler (Melanie) Garn, Sharlie (Brandt) Leslie, Cameron Garn and Andee (Chad) Porter; 23 grandchildren; a brother, Brett Garn; sisters, Julie Brinton, Laurie Rich and Kris Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Tricia; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Call Garn. In the early morning hours of September 21, 2019, Janet quietly and peacefully slipped from this life into the next at the home of her daughter in St. George, Utah. She was born May 5, 1940, in Payson, Utah. She was the middle child of the three children of Richard Albert Gough and Aleene Kay. She married her true love Clark Henry Rose in Orem, Utah on May 28, 1960. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Utah Temple. She grew up on a small farm at the mouth of Payson Canyon, with her sisters Reva and Mariel. The pastures, fields, and forest were their playground. They ran free as wild horses and had a very happy childhood. Janet completed high school at Brigham Young High School in Provo in the Class of 1958. She then graduated with a cosmetology license from Hollywood Beauty College in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Primary and Relief Society. She worked at North Ogden Elementary School. She led a life of service, always thinking of others. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, reading, shopping, lunch with the girls, traveling, and marking goals off her bucket list. She lived in North Ogden, Utah and St. George, Utah. She took joy in being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She and Clark raised four children. She said her greatest accomplishment was her family. They brought her much happiness. Seldom a day went by that she did not talk on the phone with one or all of her children. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Clark and their four children: JaNeece Knowles (Keith), DeAnn Fifield (Steve), Richard Rose (Julee), Nicole Christensen (Chad), 18 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Mariel Baird Limb (Walt), brother-in-laws: Kenneth Rose (Bobbie), Marvin Limb, and Reid Fowers. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Reva Stubbs, brother-in-law Wayne Stubbs, sister-in- law Julie Fowers. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 27, 2019, at 11 AM at North Ogden 16th Ward LDS Chapel, 205 E. Elberta Dr., North Ogden, Utah 84414 with visitation from 9:30-10:30 AM and also on Thursday, September 26, 2019, from 6-8 PM at the same location. His parents are Clyde LeRoy Johnson and Ruth Laie Taylor Johnson. Brent married Barbara Jean Gregson on August 30, 1961, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. Brent died on August 2, 1965 in Downey, Idaho. His interment, Provo, Utah.

Class of 1958. Linda Lee Johnson. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: LINDA LEE JOHNSON CASTLETON. Walnut Creek, California. Linda Lee (Johnson) Castleton, 82, passed away suddenly on May 4th, 2023. Linda was born in Provo, Utah to LeRoy and Crystal Johnson on September 8, 1940. She attended Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1958, then attended BYU majoring in Music. Linda later moved to Salt Lake City where she worked in the Secretary of State's Office at the State Capitol, did some modeling and was 1st runner-up to Miss Utah. From a very young age, Linda had a strong passion for music and singing. At 18 she auditioned for and was accepted into the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and was the youngest member at the time. Linda sang in the choir for 10 years and traveled with the choir all over the U.S. and Canada. Being a member of the choir was a proud achievement and highlight in Linda's life and she would talk about it often. She would love to mention her singing with the choir on a cold January day on the steps of the Capitol during the inauguration of President Nixon. It was while singing in the choir that Linda met her loving husband, John, also a choir member. Linda and John got married and moved to Sacramento, where Linda worked at the State Capitol for then Governor Ronald Reagan, another highlight in her life. They eventually moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where they raised two children, Jennifer and John Jr. Linda was a stay-at-home Mom for over 22 years before going back to work at The Waterford at Rossmoor, in Walnut Creek, an elegant Senior Living Community. Linda worked there for 21 years and loved her job as an assistant for many different departments. She truly loved working with Seniors and especially enjoyed helping with many activities such as calling Bingo and throwing Happy Hours and parties for the residents. Linda's deep love of music was strongly apparent, and she could be heard constantly humming or singing no matter where she was or what she was doing. Others were in awe of her beautiful and amazing singing voice, and she was often asked to sing for special occasions. Her husband, John, also had a wonderful voice and they sang together for many special events throughout their lives. Linda's love of music and singing will always be carried on through her children and grandchildren. Linda is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, John Bramwell Castleton Sr. and is survived by her two children, Jennifer Castleton Hillard and John Bramwell Castleton, Jr., her three lovely grandchildren, Megan "Max" Crystal Hillard, Nathaniel Grage Castleton and John "Jack" Sandvik Castleton, as well as her sister Kay Funes and many nieces and nephews.
