Class of 1958. Kent G. Phillips. Football, Wrestling, Track, Lettermen, French Club, Quill & Scroll, Y'ld Cat Newspaper, Chorus, Model U.N., Senior Hop Decoration Committee, Party After Graduation Committee. BYU 1962. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Kent Gordon Phillips, 82, of Orem, Utah, returned to his Heavenly Father surrounded by loved ones at the home he built and lived in for 44 years, on January 8, 2022. Kent was born November 4, 1939 in Provo, Utah to Joseph and Leah Phillips. During his younger years, Kent spent much time working with his father, uncle, and cousins in the plastering business. This early education in hard work and family relationships was evident throughout Kent's life as there was never a job too big or too small, and the relationships he formed with his cousins lasted their entire lives. Kent graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1958. He lettered in football and wrestling. Kent married his sweetheart, Susan, on August 19, 1967 and they were later sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on September 17, 1974. In 1977, Kent and Susan moved back to Utah and built a house that has been their family home since that time. Kent worked many different jobs throughout their first several years of marriage and received an associate's degree in HVAC from Utah Valley Technical College in the early 1980's. It was not until a few years later that he learned how to perform stone masonry. After working as an apprentice for a short time, Kent started his own business. With the help of family and friends, Phillips Stone Co. took off. The same lessons about hard work Kent learned as a young man were then handed down to his sons. As a true artist, Kent won several blue ribbons in home shows over the years for his beautiful stonework. His artistry can still be seen on homes and businesses along the Wasatch Front from Logan to Elk Ridge. Kent was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings over the years. His favorite, and most recent calling was as a Temple worker at the Provo, Utah Temple. He had an unwavering testimony of the Church and of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Kent was always quick to help anyone in need and his kind heart touched many throughout his life. Kent's love of family is something that will be most remembered. Camping, hunting, fishing, picnics, and sporting events were always family events. Kent's heart was always full when he was with his family. Kent was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Leah Phillips; brother, Ronald (Erma) Phillips; and sister, Jennette (Norman) Whitaker. Kent is survived by his wife, Susan Phillips. Children, David Phillips, Bobbi Lynn (Brian) Christen, Kristin (Scott) Foster, Gavin (Tiana) Phillips, Brent (Miriam Phillips); 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Paul and Gail Smith
  • Cell: 801-582-6506
  • Home: 801-292-8003

Class of 1958. Paul Thomas Smith. Key Club President, Band, Pep Band, Seminary Graduate, Dance Band, Graduation Committee. BYU BS Teacher Education & Teaching Certificate 1965. BYU MED Secondary Curriculum & Instruction 1969. Married Gail. LDS Seminary and Institute teacher. ~ ~ ~ ~ "After graduating from BYH I attended my freshman year at BYU. Our family moved to Canoga Park, California, where I received a mission call to the Southern States Mission. When I reached the mission home in Atlanta I was assigned to the new Florida Mission. I served in Miami, Brandon, Lakeland, and the mission home at Winter Park. One of my companions in Miami was Douglas Doxey, a fellow classmate at BY High. Shortly after my release my family returned to Utah, where I resumed my studies at BYU. I soon became reacquainted with Gail Boyd of Orlando. Shortly afterward we were engaged and were married in the Salt Lake Temple by Elder Howard W. Hunter, who earlier had set me apart as a missionary. Following graduation I became a seminary teacher in Granger, Utah. Four years later I was transferred to southern California where I became an institute director and teacher. In 1971 we returned to Florida where we spent five years. I supervised early morning and home study seminary students, taught Super Saturdays, and worked part-time as a cast member at Walt Disney World (1972-1976). I operated Main Street vehicles and later, operated monorail trains. During our years in Florida, Gail and I traveled to the Middle East with a Church Education System [CES] group--a life-changing experience. Our guide was George Horton, a former teacher at BY High. As a result of some quality reports I gave in Israel, I was invited to return to Utah to work in CES headquarters in the Church Office Building. I was there for nearly nine years before transferring to LDS Business College, where I worked for nine years, and finishing my career at the University Institute adjacent to the University of Utah. Following early retirement I was invited to join the faculty at the Joseph Smith Academy in Nauvoo to teach for the BYU Semester at Nauvoo. We were there for three school years. Gail worked in the office and I taught Church History courses as well as arranged for Church History tours to the east as well as Iowa and Missouri. We were also ordinance workers in the Nauvoo Temple. Nauvoo was a wonderful experience! We worked with retired BYU, CES, and Duke University faculty members. Gail and I have nine children and sixteen grandchildren. We have married children in California, Texas, Missouri, Utah and Virginia. I have served as a bishop in Granger, Utah, and in Centerville, Utah. I have been on two Gospel Doctrine writing committees, most recently on the Wilford Woodruff committee. I have been a Gospel Doctrine teacher twice -- my favorite calling. Gail and I spent a week with the wagon train that crossed from Nauvoo to Utah, as well as seventeen days aboard a Norwegian tall ship, Staatsrad Lehmkuhl with Sea Trek, commemorating the European Saints who came to America by ship. I wrote the book, Prophetic Destiny: The Saints in the Rocky Mountains, and co-authored Symbols in Stone with Matthew Brown. I have made recordings for Covenant Communications for twenty-five years, most recently a CD on the life of Emma Hale Smith. I have also written articles for the Ensign, New Era, and Meridian magazines, as well as the Encyclopedia of Mormonism and Utah History Encyclopedia. Although I am not a descendant of the Prophet Joseph, I assist the Smith family with research and have lectured on Emma Smith for a reunion they held in Independence, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois. Currently I am a service missionary in the Church History Library, researching on Nauvoo. I also serve as a docent at the Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City. Gail and I also serve as ordinance workers in the Bountiful Temple. I am the chairman of the Whitaker Museum board, and am assisting in the restoration of the home in which the museum is housed. Although I was only enrolled at BYH for my junior and senior years, I cherished those years and the friends and faculty there. What a wonderful experience!" ~ ~ ~ ~ Alternate email: paulthomassmith@juno.com @2010

Jay Lee Wilson died on March 8, 2004. ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY FOR JAY LEE WILSON: Jay Lee Wilson, age 63, peacefully returned to his Heavenly Father on Monday, March 8, 2004. His beautiful wife, Barbara, and their family were by his side. Jay was born May 12, 1940 in Leland, Utah to George Lee and Ellen Wilson. Jay loved his country. He was proud to represent it by serving as a member of the U.S. Army for six years. On February 3, 1962, he married his sweetheart, Barbara Lynn Balog. Their marriage was solemnized June 13, 1970 in the Manti LDS Temple. They are blessed with six children. He was a devoted husband and father. Jay was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in numerous callings. Jay and his wife especially enjoyed their time as temple workers. Jay was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a car man for 32 years before he retired in 1998. He was recently honored for 20 years of dedicated service as a Salem City Volunteer Fireman. He was known as the "Grandpa Fireman". Jay and his wife Barbara were original members of the Salem Ambulance Association. They joined as first responders in February 1987 and in 1987 they both received their EMT Basic. In 1991 Jay received his EMT Intermediate. He was an EMT instructor and also a CPR instructor serving from 1987 to the present time. Jay was honored as EMT of the Year in 2002. He has held leadership positions including Lieutenant and Training Officer for the Association. In 1993, Jay became certified in Defib. During the last seventeen years he was a responsible and dedicated member of the Salem Medical Association. Jay's love was serving others. Jay will be remembered for his walks through the town. The kids in the neighborhood had him timed so they could be ready and waiting to wave "Hi", knowing they would get a big grandpa smile and a wave back. He was an avid fan of the BYU Cougars, and loved camping and four-wheeling in the mountains with his family. He never missed the opportunity for a good water fight, most of the time being the instigator, of course. Jay had such a big heart and found enjoyment and fulfillment in serving others selflessly without a single thought of being recognized for it. Jay is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 42 years; his children: Kim (Kevin) Lloyd, Springville; Mindy (Paul) Lemon, Salem; Amie (Melvin) Sweatfield, Heber; Marcy (Zane) Baker, Salem; Jeff (Joelle) Wilson, Salem; Jason (Lacy) Wilson, Santaquin; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister: Blaine Wilson of Payson; Leon Lewis of Hinckley; and Kathryn Manis of Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Irene Christensen; and his two grandsons, Tyler Wilson and Kaydon Wilson. Funeral services were held Friday, March 12, 2004 in the Salem 4th Ward Chapel, 25 West Apple Blossom Way. Interment, Salem City Cemetery. [Deseret News, Wednesday, March 10, 2004.]

The related Awards Program is also attached. The class lists are not entirely complete. The name of a Kathryn Koester who married in the senior year and may have graduated elsewhere or later comes to mind. It is interesting to note the comparison of composition of the class in the latter case. It was in the 1956 - 57 period that the then new Provo High School opened and created a different dynamic in the town for attending Provo High or BY High. While we picked up some new senior high classmates, our senior graduating class was smaller than many previous. It was particularly hard for the athletic teams to compete against the now larger county schools. "Massacre" is not a superlative word. It led to some long veiled, but festering animosities. I also include a copy of the Seminary graduation program for the 1958 year. Seminary only needed three years classwork for graduation so with many Class of 1959 starting Seminary in the ninth coming to eleventh grade, the ranks were swelled. The BYU Laboratory schools were great institutions. It is too bad to have focused them on young people instead of on older people who could have been more appreciative in the time. But such is the nature of life. When we are young, lacking wisdom and having the greatest needs, we have the fewest resources. As we age, we have more resources, but fewer needs. The young are foolish, but have great confidence, the old are wise and filled with knowledge, but no one asks for counsel. Thank you for your commitment and effort in this historic preservation effort. Lew Wilson PS. I have yearbooks from 1953 - 1958 for reference if you need something copied from those years.
