Goal: To make community leaders aware of the prevalence of sexual abuse among those that have developmental disabilities and to create an action plan to address the issue of sexual abuse in Washington County.
Why are we doing this? Sexual Abuse among people with disabilities is a BIG problem. Some statistics say that 90% of people with disabilities will experience some type of abuse in their lifetime and 50% of those people will be abused multiple times. Some caretakers are not aware that what they are doing is considered abuse and don’t know how to do things differently than what they are currently doing.
Who should attend this discussion? Professionals who work with those with developmental disabilities are invited. This includes group home administrators and staff, day service providers, police, case workers, nursing home providers, school counselors and administrators, clergy, disability specialists, teachers, nurses, hospital administrators, transition team members; anyone in the community that has a passion for the rights of people with disabilities.
Collaboration: All agencies in Washington County that work with those with developmental disabilities and victims of sexual abuse are invited to take part in the conversation.
