Our Take: In the first season, before it became the Best Show On Television, Friday Night Lights took a few episodes to really get going. Season Two starts off in a not dissimilar fashion. The first couple of episodes are a bit jarring. It’s eight months after the events of season one, Coach Taylor’s working at a nother school out of town while his wife is raising they’re baby, Matt and Julie are on the rocks, and Tyra and Landry are involved in a murder cover-up. Whaaa?
But of course, as is always the case with Friday Night Lights, all the individual story pieces started to come together, and the show quickly returned to its status as the Best Show On Television. It’s been so well publicized how this show is critically adored and has a rabid fan base but can’t get its ratings up that it almost feels redundant to mention it here. But seriously, why aren’t you watching this show? It doesn’t matter whether you like football, teen dramas, the south, or anything, because this show transcends any and all labels and genres. It’s just plain great television. Now, who doesn’t like that?
What is nice about the disconcerting opening of the second season is that allows you to start watching the show without necessarily having to go back and watch the first season. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend skipping the first year because it’s so amazingly good, but if you’re on a budget, you can jump in with season two and figure things out pretty quickly.
As with the first season collection: Friday Night Lights: The Second Season isn’t overloaded with special features, but it comes with a few solid ones.
- Deleted Scenes – At least one cut scene for every episode. - Audio Commentaries - Three audio commentaries are included: one with producers Jason Katims and Jeffrey Reiner, one with stars Connie Britton and Aimee Teegarden, and one with stars Jesse Plemmons and Adrienne Palicki. - William S. Paley Television Festival: Interview with the Cast (30 minutes) – A very cool panel discussion with cast.
There are a lot of reasons to watch Friday Night Lights, but the main two are Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. I’ve said before how they’re the best and most realistic married couple on television, and they’re also two of the absolute finest actors working in television today. Luckily, they happen to be working on one of the finest shows in television.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
