The Boondocks: The Complete Second Season

Official Synopsis:
The complete uncut, uncompromising and uncensored 2nd season of the top-rated comedy show comes to DVD in this special must-own collector's set. Based on Aaron McGruder's award-winning comic strip, this provocative animated series brings the hilarious exploits of Huey, Riley, Granddad, Ruckus, Jazmine and the rest of The Boondocks crew to life. Loaded with bonus extras, this collection also features the voice talents of Snoop Dogg, Mo'Nique, Aisha Tyler, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes and other exciting guest stars.

Our Take:
I’m pretty sure that if The Boondocks was produced by a white man, it would actually be a crime to watch it. But since it was created and produced by an African-American, the rampant stereotypes and racism of the show are ok. Which suits me just fine, because I think The Boondocks is simply hysterical. Extremely, horribly wrong on every level, but hysterical.

There’s no way to describe the show; you really just have to watch it. I could say that it’s like a mash-up of Chappelle’s Show, In Living Color, and The Simpsons, but that’s not entirely accurate. All I know is that the adventures of Huey (expertly voiced by Regina King, of all people), Riley, Granddad, Ruckus, and Jasmine, now in full uncensored form, are a heck of a lot of fun. You’ll find yourself laughing, then mad at yourself for laughing at such an offensive joke, and then laughing again. It’s an oddly compelling feeling.

As with the first Boondocks DVD release, The Boondocks: The Complete Second Season is loaded with extra features.

* Bonus Episode – “The Hunger Strike” with guest stars Cee-Lo, Donald Faison, Tavis Smiley, Debra Wilson.
* Bonus Episode – “The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show” with guest stars Donald Faison and Debra Wilson.

* Audio Commentaries – On four episodes with Aaron McGruder and cast members.
* Behind The Boondocks (17 minutes) – A solid making-of feature.
* Trouble in Woodcrest (4 minutes) – Meet the voice talent.
* What Niggas? (1 minute) – This one’s a bit much even for me. Hear the N-word over and over and over again by different voice talent. At least it’s short.
* The Playas (23 minutes) – Interviews with the main cast members.

* Video Introductions – By McGruder & Co.
* Minisode: Spider-Man – “ The Party.”
* Minisode: Married…with Children – “Rock and Roll Girl.”

The Boondocks remains as controversial as ever, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Frankly, if every show could be as blatantly unafraid of controversy as this one is, the television landscape would be a vastly different place. Not every episode fires on full cylinders, but by and large The Boondocks: The Complete Second Season is a terrific collection of side-splittingly funny, irreverent, and politically incorrect cartoons.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
