Official Synopsis: From the makers of Notting Hill and Love Actually comes the charming and irresistibly funny romantic comedy Definitely Maybe. When Will (Ryan Reynolds) decides to tell his daughter (Abigail Breslin) the story of how he met her mother he discovers that a second look at the past might also give him a second chance at the future. Co-starring Elizabeth Banks Rachel Weisz and Isla Fisher it's the heartwarming story that makes you realize it's definitely never too late to go back and maybe find a happy ending.
Our Take: Hey, want to see a movie that was marketed really poorly? Then check out Definitely, Maybe, the fun romantic dramedy filled with political insights and interesting relationships that was marketed as another frothy, dumb rom-com! You’ll marvel at the fact that the film actually has a plot! Real characters! Interesting story developments! And Ryan Reynolds can actually act!
Did you get any of that from the TV commercials? I didn’t think so.
Don’t get me wrong, Definitely, Maybe doesn’t reinvent the romantic comedy genre, but like the recent P.S I Love You, the film has a lot more going on under its hood than you’d expect. The TV commercials for the film completely skipped over the whole set-up of the movie, which is that Will’s daughter asks him to tell her the story of how he and her mom met. In doing so, Will tells her of the three great loves of his life and makes her guess which one is actually her mom. It’s a framing device that only comes into play in limited amounts, but it works well and Ryan Reynolds and Abigail Breslin have great chemistry on screen together as father and daughter. Trying to guess which one is the girl’s mother is part of the fun of the movie, too. Reynolds also interacts well with Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, and Isla Fisher, who play the three ladies of his life. All four turn in excellent performances, especially Rachel Weisz (but that’s no real surprise, now is it?)
There are a few extra features included on the DVD:
* Deleted Scenes.
* Creating Romance – A making-of featurette.
* The Challenging Times of Definitely Maybe – Looks at the film’s passage through time, an integral part of the plot.
* Commentary - With director Adam Brooks and Ryan Reynolds.
Definitely, Maybe is a serious movie with a lot more to offer than was ever presented to the general public through the film’s advertising. It’s not going to win over guys who are looking for the next Michael Bay flick, but if you’re looking for an enjoyable date night movie, Definitely, Maybe definitely may be the right choice.
