Remember The Daze

Official Synopsis:
This comedy looks through the eyes of a handful of teenagers who make their way through the last day of high school in the last year of the past millennium and provides a glimpse into the teenage wasteland of 1999 suburbia. The film follows several students as they relish the advent of summer vacation and struggle with drugs, sex and the unpredictability of the future before them.

Our Take:
I know I’m old because I recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of my Senior Prom.  Or maybe I was just raised on Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Clueless. Whatever the reason, I don’t understand these high school let’s-spend-our-lives-wasted movies.  They are the antithesis of my high school experience and I went to public high school with 350 in my graduating class, so it wasn’t exactly an unusual situation.

That being said, Remember the Daze is light-hearted fare and somewhat amusing.  The irony of having the end of the year blow-out at the principal’s home is pretty original.  “Class of 93 was crazy…”  is the best line ever, since that was my year.  It fits in nicely with the other movies of this genre such as Dazed and Confused, American Pie and the like. The ensemble cast is extremely likable and includes Alexa Vega from Spy Kids, Wesley Johnathan from TV’s What I Like About You, and Moira Kelly of The Cutting Edge and One Tree Hill.

In terms of extra features, the Behind-the-Scenes featurette actually raised my opinion of the movie.  The films is intended to be a “day in the life” of a high school class entering their senior year at the end of the millennium and gives a glimpse of how unsettling life is at that age.  The rationale and the comments of the actors and crew give credence to this being more than just another “teenagers getting wasted” movie.

I’m sure there are many teens out there who will watch Remember the Daze and either reminisce about  fond memories or live to emulate it.  At the end of the day, it’s a decent escape from the everyday for those of us who are too old to remember their high school days.
