Student Bodies

Official Synopsis:
The World's First Comedy Horror Movie! This killer comedy is the original teenage parody horror film taken to the extreme! The screams are as frequent as the laughs as a crazed, heavy-breathing murderer terrorizes Lamab High with a series of mysterious deaths. Everyone is a suspect and no one is safe from the hilarious twists and turns as "Breather" terrorizes and kills sex-starved couples. When the body count rises, one student attempts to solve the mystery and instead finds herself a suspect. Does she survive or become another victim? It's anyone's guess in this satirical romp of horror!

Our Take:
Student Bodies is marketing itself as being “The worlds first comedy horror movie!” and although I’m not sure if I believe that, I’m also not going to take the time research it, as it’s ultimately not that important of a film either way. What I will complain about within that statement is that this isn’t really a “comedy horror” (or rather horror-comedy as we’ve come to say) but instead it’s just a spoof movie. It’s the original Scary Movie.

I really don’t care for spoof movies all that much so while Student Bodies does have a fair amount of jokes I did actually like I still wouldn’t be able to really call it a funny movie. What I will commend it for is how well the filmmakers knew the horror genre and all its clichés in 1981 and how just about none of them have changed. Everything that Scream and Scary Movie mocked in more recent years was done here first.

One of those filmmakers was even our elusive friend “Allen Smithee”. If you know anything about film production you know who, or rather what, Allen Smithee is and while there is nothing great on screen here there also isn’t anything so awful that I can imagine anyone wanting to take their name off of for. Nor can I imagine said persons name was big enough that he didn’t want this to ruin his flourishing career.

There are no special features included on this disc.

There are some annoying aspects of Student Bodies (namely the heavy-breathing killer) but if you’re a fan of the Scary Movie franchise I could definitely give this a recommendation if for nothing else than to see how it was done in the 80’s.
