My Mom’s New Boyfriend

Official Synopsis:
FBI Field Agent Henry Durand (Colin Hanks) has a problem. It seems his mother Marty (Meg Ryan) has developed a dating life of her own in the three years he's been on assignment. Now, Henry finds himself fending off midnight serenades from lovelorn Italian chefs and watching helplessly as Marty hops on the back of a college dropout's motorcycle, all of which is enough to drive him into therapy. But things get more serious when Marty begins dating Tommy (Antonio Banderas), the FBI's number one suspect in an international art theft ring. Henry soon has to witness more of his mom's love life than he ever wanted when the FBI orders him to spy on her to catch a thief!

Our Take:
My Mom’s New Boyfriend is a likable movie with recognizable stars.  It is almost ironic that Meg Ryan is playing the mother of her Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail co-star Tom Hanks’ son, Colin.  As Marty, Meg is not playing your ordinary mom-next-door, though, as her son learns upon his return from a three year assignment with the FBI.

The story is predictable but the actors bring so much to these characters that I found myself enjoying it.  I know it’s probably not fair to compare him to his famous father but Colin Hanks has many of his dad’s characteristics and mannerisms.  It’s almost like you’re looking at him thinking, I’ve seen you before, I know you… and then it hits you – he’s Tom Hanks’ son.  He and Meg Ryan do what his father and Meg did best, playing lovable, quirky characters.  Just as Tom started out strictly “quirky” we’ve all seen over the years what a superb actor he’s grown to be.  I hope we can say the same for Colin in a few years.

Selma Blair and Antonio Banderas are other familiar faces and are fun to watch.  As a When Harry Met Sally fan, it was strange to see Meg Ryan in such an overtly sexual role but she carries if off nicely.  I think of her usually as the nutty girl-next-door, mostly sweet and nice.  Marty is a nice departure from that stereotype.

The additional features of deleted scenes and The 3rd Degree: The Making of My Mom's New Boyfriend are equally enjoyable.

My Mom’s New Boyfriend is light-hearted movie for any Meg Ryan or Antonio Banderas fan.  It reminds me of many of Tom Hanks’ early movies and that’s not a bad thing.
